Delayed again: Bond turmoil as new script fails to thrill By Baz Bamigboye Published: 17:23 EST, 26 June 2014 | Updated: 02:40 EST, 27 June 2014 There has been what some are calling ‘polite turmoil’ behind the scenes of the latest James Bond film, resulting in a reshuffle of screenwriters and a delay to the start of filming. The picture, known for now simply as Bond 24, was being written solely by Oscar-nominated John Logan, after he was brought in by director Sam Mendes to pen the last picture, Skyfall. In the process, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, long-time 007 writers, were gently moved on. But now they’re back. The pair — who co-wrote five films for the franchise — have just been hired to re-write Logan’s script and give it some ‘punch’. An executive associated with the Bond films observed: ‘Neal and Robert are only doing what was done to them. There’s no blood; no scars.’ Perhaps not, but I asked if there was turmoil. The response was this: ‘Let’s call it polite turmoil. People are getting on with their work, but we have to wait for the script, so filming won’t begin till December, a few months later than they wanted.’ Interestingly, producers at Eon and Sony had already opted to delay shooting while they waited for Mendes to direct Simon Russell Beale as King Lear at the National Theatre and to co-stage a revival of Cabaret in New York. The script problems were detected before John Cleese’s stinging criticism in the Radio Times last week about recent Bond movies. Cleese, Bond boffin Q in Die Another Day (and Q’s sidekick R in the earlier The World Is Not Enough) said recent Bond pictures were ‘gritty and humourless’. He pointed out that big box-office money was coming from Asia, ‘where the audiences go to watch the action sequences, and that’s why in my opinion the action sequences go on for too long, and it’s a fundamental flaw’. Cleese added: ‘The audiences in Asia are not going for the subtle British humour, or the class jokes.’ Be that as it may, Skyfall raked in more than £1?billion in global takings — £100?million-plus of that in the UK alone. Purvis and Wade have been asked to ‘punch up’ the script and sprinkle in more gags, emphasising the witty repartee between Daniel Craig’s 007 and Naomie Harris’s Miss Moneypenny, and focusing on the interplay between Bond and Ralph Fiennes’s M. Mendes and his team have already been on recces to possible locations; and a handful of Scandinavian actresses and models have been interviewed with a view to starring as Bond girls — excuse me, Bond persons. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2671471/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-Bond-turmoil-new-script-fails-thrill.html Evidently it's going to be a long wait until the next anti-Bond film is produced and released. First we read that the esteemed London playwright John Logan has written the script because EON hack writers Purvis & Wade have been dismissed from the company. The whole wide world rejoices. Logan was brought in by director Sam Mendes to rewrite SKYFALL when the original Purvis & Wade script was deemed unworkable by the director. Then it is announced that Purvis & Wade would be revising Logan's script for Bond 24. Now we read that Craig is unhappy with the wit and humor allegedly being brought back to the series because it's not his forte (manic depression is his forte). Obviously Craig is as much a part of the problem as inept writers and Barbara Broccoli's and Michael J. Wilson's incompetence. They seem incapable of developing a project and bringing it to fruition unless they hire other producers to do it for them. They take the credit, but they don't do the work. The series needs new producers at the helm. Completely different minds who would do completely different things from the get-go. 'Bond 24' Cancels Filming Due To Unworkable Schedules? Daniel Craig Said To Be Turned Off By The Idea Of Having Humor Mixed Into The Movie? BY P Tuason | Jul 03, 2014 11:19 PM EDT "Bond 24" is slated to have an October 2015 release date. However, new reports suggest that there have been a revision of some sort to the movie's story. Rumors of the movie being cancelled altogether because of the delays are false. But, reports of having to rewrite the script to include some humor and wit are definitely true. Original writer John Logan has already written the script for "Bond 24." But, director Sam Mendes was not completely satisfied with it so he asked Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to do some necessary fix-me-ups. A source claims: "Purvis and Wade have been asked to 'punch up' the script and sprinkle in more gags, emphasising the witty repartee between Daniel Craig's 007 and Naomie Harris's Miss Moneypenny, and focusing on the interplay between Bond and Ralph Fiennes's M." This latest development has pushed back the movie's filming from October to December. And it might follow that "Bond 24" will hit the big screens on a later 2015 date. According to a Yahoo blog: "The need for a rewrite implies that Logan's screenplay, while solid, might've been a tad too serious, whereas 007 adventures have always had a satisfying blend of quips, one-liners and playful banter from the lead characters, as well as a serious, real undertone, especially in the latter releases - 'Casino Royale' being a particularly raw and gritty example." Fans are also awaiting who will be cast as the next Bond villain. Earlier reports have connected Kevin Spacey, Daniel Radcliffe and Ron Perlman to the role. But Spacey has already denied that he's been offered the role, while Radcliffe and Perlman have expressed their intent to play the Bond villain. No official confirmation has been made about other cast members including the next Bond girl. Are you disappointed that the movie's filming will start late than scheduled? Sound of below! SKYFALL did such a clinical and comprehensive job of deconstructing James Bond out of existence, I can't imagine where John Logan and Sam Mendes will take the series next, unless it's more of the same.

And seriously, re-hiring Beavis & Butthead as writers to punch up the script? They are dreadful writers, the British version of Orci & Kurtzman. Man alive.

James Bond movies are cyclic. When there is a new actor playing Bond, they make a "serious" movie and everyone praises it. Then as the actor's term goes on, the movies become so much farce. My thoughts on Skyfall were the same as Shane Black's - it wasn't the worst 007 movie, but it was damn close. (Much like Shane Black, I will likely never be asked to pen a 007 movie now, but hey, their loss!) What I'm worried about is that Skyfall marks the slide into the whole "Roger Moore in a hovercraft gondola and pigeon double-take" crap. A lot of people don't like Quantum of Solace because its very Bourne-ish (which I sort of get) but the other extreme is just as bad. There is a middle ground: for all its many, many failings, Moore's era had one of my favorite Bond films with For Your Eyes Only which I think struck a nice balance. Or Living Daylights! (Though to this day, the idea that a cello sounds find with a bullet hole in it makes me roll my eyes) I like Craig's version of Bond. I just can do without the awful mop-head hipster Q ("I am a certified computer genius... let me plug this terrorist's laptop directly into the MI6 mainframe!") or the silly gun-car bullshit. Or John "I've never written anything that wasn't recycled" Logan for that matter. But then again, like I said, they ain't calling me to write this stuff, are they?
