La-La Land Records presents the premiere CD release of composer John Scott’s (THE FINAL COUNTDOWN, SHOOT TO KILL, NORTH DALLAS FORTY) magnificent orchestral score to the 1984 Warner Bros. feature film GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES, starring Christopher Lambert, Andie MacDowell, Ralph Richardson, Ian Holm and James Fox, directed by Hugh Hudson. Scott’s brilliant score bursts with the violence and vitality of the jungle, yet is also heart-moving and surprisingly gentle. This re-issue was produced by MV Gerhard and remastered by James Nelson from the original Warner Bros. ¼ inch album masters. While no elements were secured to give this wonderful score the expanded treatment it deserves, we were able to pull the OVERTURE and END CREDITS off the original magnetic track and present it here as Bonus Material. CD Booklet features in-depth liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond. This release is limited to 3000 Units.

Mr. Goodman fashions a delightful, sophisticated orchestral score in the grand comic farce tradition - bursting with energy and themes - to buoy all the rambunctious fun of the lead simian’s adventures within a posh, five-star hotel. Baxter’s groovy, full-throttle rock score punches this fun biker flick into overdrive with uber-catchy riffs, fun vocals and late 60’s rock-era spills and chills. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton and mastered by James Nelson, this special release presents the original LP presentation, remastered, along with more than 15 minutes of never-before-released film-version score tracks. Presenting composer Les Baxter’s (THE DUNWICH HORROR, PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO, THE RAVEN, HELL’S BELLES, BIKINI BEACH) original score to the 1965 AIP beach party classic BEACH BLANKET BINGO, starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, directed by William Asher. Mr. Baxter’s fun, and naturally far-out and groovy, music serves an outstanding example of the indelible sound he crafted for all of AIP’s beach-themed musical comedies. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton and James Nelson, and mastered by James Nelson, this release is limited to 1200 units and features in-depth, exclusive liner notes by Randall Larson. Due to licensing rights issues, the music-only backing tracks of the film’s songs appear here without vocals. Given the condition of the master tapes, having been in storage for more than 45 years, the tracks on this release were painstakingly enhanced to the best quality possible.

We did reach out to Mr. Scott after we secured full rights for this reissue, but he was respectfully not interested in participating. Luckily, while WB had no additional elements for an expansion, they had the album master for the LP, so we went ahead with that and the two bonus tracks we were able to secure. James Nelson made it sound great and we're excited to get Mr. Scott's great score back out there... and finally on CD.

I had the boot for many years untill I gave it away a few months ago. It was an OK score, but a little too much violence and dissonance for my taste. But the more evocative bits were truly beautiful.
Also glad to see that they preserved the LP program (here's a case where sloppy archiving actually comes to my rescue!).
That musical violence and dissonance, Thor, which John Scott wrote for "Greystoke" is what makes this a better-than-average score and indicates Scott's musical talents and capabilities (capabilities beyond the scope of many of the current people writing music for films in the 21st century).
Which Media Ventures type of composer could come up with soundtrack music sounding like the Pygmy Attack music heard in "Greystoke"?
I'd classify John Scott (stylistically) as somewhere between Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. While John Scott's music has not attained the levels of innovation trail-blazed by Jerry Goldsmith, Scott employs dissonance in his film scores considerably more frequently (and to greater effect) than that which is heard in the scores of John Williams.
In a way, I wish soundtracks by John Williams would sound more like those of John Scott's; then I'd appreciate them more than I do.
Nonetheless, "Greystoke" is not John Scott's finest composition of all, nor is this soundtrack a complete program of Scott music (some tracks hailing from works of Edward Elgar).
I cherish my 30+ John Scott soundtracks, and his "Greystoke" is certainly one of his stand-apart scores from the 1980s.
Members of this board should be made aware that track #2 is a selection from Elgar's Symphony No.1, and Elgar's Chanson de Matin is the very brief source for the Gardens of Greystoke track. That Sontag Polka is by D'Albert.
To my ears, "Greystoke" is to John Scott's oeuvre what "Papillon" is within Jerry Goldsmith's canon - lyrical yet savage musical depictions of Man vs. Nature (and Man vs. Man).
