Things have been crazy in La-La Land lately, with lots of biz going on and orders to be sent out. Just wanted to chime in and state for the record that we were certainly not trying to mislead anyone with this new POSEIDON ADVENTURE release. The score is, as stated on our announcement, and in the liners, presented in Stereo. Simply put, technology has improved over the past decade, making a reissue like this possible, and we feel that the restoration undertaken by Mike Matessino and Nick Redman has resulted in a tremendous improvement in quality, one which we hope people will enjoy as much as we do.

Cheers MV, it's a release that is much appreciated!
There is some genuine and sincere interest regarding the production of this score that has been talked about in the other thread, unfortunately finding it will be quite difficult as most of the thread has been hijacked with nonsense.
Should you get the chance and should you be interested in doing so, I for one would love to hear any more info or insight you could provide about this project.
Cheers.

Thanks, MV, for taking a moment to point out that The Poseidon Adventure was a major restoration effort that yielded very satisfying results. Since there seem to be questions about the production, I'll offer a few details, although I think this is documented in the liner notes:

In 1998, the deteriorating 6-track 35 mm mag was transferred to a 2" protection tape while simultaneously mixed in stereo to DAT. For the FSM release only a few of those stereo mixes were acceptable enough to include, the rest of the score coming from a 1/4" mono back-up source. For the La-La Land release the 2" tape was recalled and I was able to work with the 6-track material for a considerable length of time to save the score in stereo. This involved an occasional compromise and every trick in the book to pull off, but obviously this is an important enough title to warrant a full restoration effort. Everyone was very excited by the results, but in the end we still found that it was best to use the mono source for a few tracks and to process them in a synthesized stereo. The purpose of this was not to deceive anyone, but to make sure the entire score played cohesively, hence the accurate statement that the score is presented in stereo. (To my knowledge, the 6-track elements were not used for the DVD mix.)

Perhaps more specific PR text should be considered in the future. For anything I work on, once a title is announced I'm happy to answer questions here or via email about sources and sound quality as I appreciate that this is a factor when considering whether or not to buy a new edition of something that was released previously. In the case of The Poseidon Adventure, my own opinion is that the score is a much more powerful experience now and a worthy addition to a collection for this reason as well as for the song and source music that are now included.

Cool. 500 = 1/6 of ID4 sold. Pretty good business in just 6 days! Who says those monkeys can't come through?

It sounds pretty dammed good to me. Kudos to all - great work. And thanks for as many Stella Stevens pics as your could reasonably get away with. There are never too many

That can't be right...

POSEIDON is limited to 3000 and there's 400 left - so 2600 have sold.

25% of 2600 is 650. Which means ID4 has sold 3,250 copies so far.

If I'm seeing the numbers right, anyway. I should quit speculating and just buy the damn CDs already. big grin

Oops. I was thinking 400 gone, so 25% of ID4 would be a 100 increase.
That was a stupid mistake!
And 500 is a pretty small number for such a big release.
How did I ever get through geometry with such math?
Go Basil! You are right. Thanks for correcting that.

I took my sweet time ordering TPA because I thought, with the pre-existing FSM in so many hands, this would last forever. Like LLL's superb LOST IN SPACE set is still available(!). But I finally cracked and placed my order Sunday night and now I'm glad I did. This CD might be going away.

To my knowledge, the 6-track elements were not used for the DVD mix.

Many thanks for taking the time to explain Mike, it's much appreciated.

Do you have any idea what elements were used for the special edition DVD?
The reason I ask is that after watching the DVD again yesterday, the Main Title sounded to me like genuine stereo and also in good shape, so I was just wondering if there was a particular reason why that version wasn't used, or was it even considered, etc?

Regardless though, I'm thrilled that this score has been revisited, restored and re-released.
The FSM version is one of my most played discs and this new edition is most welcome indeed and certainly an incredible joy to listen to .....I'd of paid triple the price just for the alternate versions of the Main Title!

Thanks to all those invloved in making this happen as it's one of my favourite Williams scores.
Cheers.

This was the kick in the pants I needed to order this sucker already, and what do I get for my troubles but a shipping notice in under an hour! Bravo, LLL!

MV, are you pre-announcing your May 11th titles tomorrow?

Probably not. Between personal stuff (i.e. new baby coming any day now) and work stuff I don't know when the May 11th titles will come be coming. I will let you guys know in advance, though. We hope to have both titles signed by their respective composers. If that happens it would be worth the delay! Both composers are new to our label. smile
