Some years ago Prometheus reissued their own older CD (PCD 121) of Ken Wannberg's THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT and MOTHER LODE as a "remastered" version (still PCD 121, but with new artwork). The older release had a rather distorted sound, especially in the string section. Can anyone compare both versions and tell me, if the re-release was better and is worth buying?

Well, I was much happier with the remastered verison..

James Nelson did a great job cleaning it up, both scores sound better.

But I'm biased..

I've just picked up the 2007 Prometheus release for 3 euros 95. The BSX upgrade was unfortunately nowhere to be seen amongst the vegetables at the stall. I've given it a quick runthrough, and although I (now) know that there's a better-sounding (and expanded) doofer, I'm pleased with this. The two scores are excellent. But boy, was Wannberg on a Goldsmith kick or what? Sounds like he was writing RAMBO III before it was made.

I shall report back with more mollusc-brained comments when I've heard it properly. I'm gestating a few rabbits at the moment.

I'm not familiar with the sound of the Prometheus editions but I have the BSX edition which sounds very good.
It has indeed some Rambo III vibes, maybe it was used as temp track to Rambo III?

I saw that it is still available digitaly at BSX:

Yes, the first edition on CD is a bit muddy sounding, but certainly not in any terrible way or unplayable.
The expanded/remastered edition is much better in clarity, although I can't recall THAT MUCH extra music that was sorely missed from the earlier edition.
I think the old LP programme played just fine anyway.
It was a nice length and well paced and offered up a great listen.
Good score...VERY Goldsmith-ian.

I recently picked up all three of Prometheus's Wannberg titles. Looking forward to listening to them, any comments on the other scores?

I recently picked up all three of Prometheus's Wannberg titles. Looking forward to listening to them, any comments on the other scores?

So, JTW, the Wannberg Prometheus releases are (I think) -

Vol 1 - THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT/MOTHER LODE (1993, re-released 1997)
Vol 2 - DRAW/RED RIVER (1994)
Vol 3 - THE AMATEUR/OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN/THE LATE SHOW (1997)

Is that right? Are those the ones you picked up? Things can get confusing, because BSX did another upgraded and expanded release in 2011 of THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT and OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN, along with THE LATE SHOW (and called "Volume 1" if I'm not mistaken)...

Anyway, I can't be of much help because I only have the 1997 re-release of THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT and MOTHER LODE. Both are excellent in very different ways. THE PHILLY XPERIMENT is a tremendous score, especially if you like Jerry Goldsmith, RAMBO, CAPRICORN ONE etc. MOTHER LODE is one I enjoyed on first listen, but it needs more than that. Give me a few more days and I'll prepare a rabbit.

Yeah, that looks about right Graham.
His scores are solid, orchestral efforts.
The BSX double discer and DRAW/RED RIVER should see you right.
If you like the 'traditional' style of film scoring, you should like these.

This is one of my favorite movies and I’ve owned pretty much every edition there is. The newer one with the remaster is definitely the way to go. There’s no question about it. It’s so much better. Really good score.

JTWfan, how's the Wannberg Prometheus Odyssey going?

As I mentioned, I only have the Prometheus remaster from 2007 of THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT/ MOTHER LODE. I think I'd seen THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT on the telly donkey's years ago, so I knew the score was good. MOTHER LODE is something I'd never even heard of, but I gave it a good spin yesterday. It's pretty nice, nothing spectacularly original or striking, but it has some lovely pastoral writing in it and a touch of the Herrmanns in the suspense cues.

Anyway, although I don't consider myself to be an audiophile, I was kind of distracted by the poor sound on THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT (MOTHER LODE gets away with it better because it's a "softer" score). Perhaps it's just because I know that the BSX doubler has vastly improved sound that the 2007 Prometheus release is somewhat grating. It's a bit like being at a live concert of the music and being put in the worst seats - in the toilets. And this was remastered from the previous edition from 1993? According to SoundtrackCollector there was an LP release, on the Rhino label, in 1984. The content is similar to that of the Prometheus CDs. I wonder how that LP passed me by in 1984... Anyone got it and can comment on the sound quality? Just out of interest.

So, Kenneth Wannberg - I only have this one CD so I can hardly identify his style(s). After so many collaborations with John Williams, I didn't expect to hear so much Goldsmith in THE PHILLY XPERIMENT. The more I listen to it, the more I think that DAMNATION ALLEY of all things is the main source of the action music. That and the RAMBOs. The quieter moments have a kind of David Shire-ish lilt to them. Interested to hear others' opinions on these scores and Wannberg in general.

I had the old Philadelphia Experiment LP, Graham.
Actually sold it very recently.
It was a great presentation of the score but the sonics were a bit muddy, like the first CD issues.
I figured it was always gonna sound like that and it was inherent in the recording, until the most recent BSX edition finally made it shine like never before.

Red River and Draw are two decent scores.
One of them is really good (can't remember which one).
And The Changeling is an effective horror score, but it's a multi composer effort, that one.

I've got 5 CDs in total by him and there is some duplication but that's unavoidable.
The 3 volumes of Film Music from Prometheus, the BSX double discer and The Changeling.
They all offer up solid, reliable, no nonsense film music in the tradition of our film composer heroes.

it is worth mentioning the the BSX release went back to the original masters for THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT and found the complete is vastly better sound the any of the earlier releases including a couple of cues that were not even in the final film.

Also included on this 2CD set is Wannberg's score for a short horror film called ACCOUNTING FOR THE SCREAMS as well as suite from "Of Unknown Origin" all of which are quite good as well

Any hope of a Wannberg Volume Two to join Volume One on BSX, Ford?

It’s cool how on the initial volume you included one expansion (with significantly better sound), one reissue (presumably no more music to be found), and one premiere. Here’s hoping that approach can continue!

Kev - I can still get the Prometheus Red River/ Draw combo at the vegetable market for 3.95 euros. It's so difficult for me to just stop buying - especially at these prices - but I have so much stuff that I just can't find the time to listen to it all. I'll buy a watermelon instead. Devoured, gone and forgotten in five minutes. Interesting to hear that you got THE PHILLY XPERIMENT on LP in '84. I initially wondered why it had passed me by, then I realised that I was in the middle of squandering Maggie Thatcher's grant for a uni education. She never got to know that I spent it on beer.

Ford - Yes, I've been aware of that set for some time. It's really tempting, but I think I've spent my allowance for this year. We'll see if I have a moment of weakness sometime tomorrow.

Listening to DRAW now and it's great.
Proper old school western film music with, once again, a much bigger Goldsmith influence than anything else.
Stagecoach and other 60s and 70s JG westerns come to mind whilst listening.

Darn your eyes, McGann - I'm gonna drop those 4 euros tomorrow. The kids can go hungry, like I did when I was their age (28 and 25).

Picture the scene...
It's 1984.
You go into a record shop.
And there, amongst the LP's, are TWO by Ken Wannberg.
DRAW...and RED RIVER*
Your eyes light up!!
Wow...he's the dude on all my John Williams soundtracks, you think.
So you buy!
And sure enough, just like that other LP you recently bought (THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT) it sounds more like Jerry Goldsmith than John Williams.
But you don't care, cos they're BOTH BRILLIANT anyway!!
Giddee Up!!

*thanks to the Time Machine at your disposal, you will actually zoom forward in time to buy RED RIVER, which he doesn't write until 1988.

I know, I know. And the bestest of the bestest is that the two LPs are only 1.97 and a half euros each, which in your country is 1 pound 68. That was cheap in 1984, but adjusted for inflation between 1984 and now (38 years!), I'm getting them for the equivalent of tuppence hay-penny!

That's if I get them. The children are revolting. Just like most kids are.
