If I had to sum it up in one word, it'd be: EPIC. I grew up watching many NFL films documentaries so you can call me biased, but I never knew Spence was such an accomplished musician. Not only did he study with Arthur Honegger - upon listening to the music one can hear how masterfully he handles the fugal treatment in his melodies, the power that breathes out of his percussion and brass sections. All in all, an important composer that completely changed the way we see sports. He gave football an epic quality - the "modern gladiators" owe this nickname to Sam Spence's epic music. Thankfully, FSM dedicated one of its print issues to this wonderful musical legacy. Any takers? Being from the UK I wasn't really familiar with the NFL or with this music so it was a great find when a single disc was released some years ago but this anthology is, I guess, the last word. You should check out a recent Sam Spence CD release by All Score Media called "Our Man In Munich": More essential music (including some of the composer's music for german productions), plus an unreleased NFL films track. I, too, have seen many NFL Films productions. Awhile ago, they did a documentary about NFL films, and Steve Sabol and Sam Spence talked about the music, its importance, and where it took its inspiration from - film music, Victory at Sea, Peter Gunn, folk music ("What do you when a Drunken Sailor...") etc. "Round up" is such a classic example of the excellent merging of Sam Spence's music and football. It's become synonymous with lineman (tuba) tumbling down the field. What are you favorite cues from the set? Thankfully, FSM dedicated one of its print issues to this wonderful musical legacy. Alex I have always been a huge fan of Sam Spence´s score for "Wie ein Blitz", a German production of Francis Durbridge´s "Bat Out Of Hell" from 1970. I grew up in the 1970s and loved all of the NFL Films music of that era, especially Spence's. He is an absolute genius. I, too, wish they would release more of his compositions. I can think of anywhere from 25 to 50 classic compositions of his that were NOT included in Autumn Thunder, which I have, of course. Thanks, Alex, for pointing out that other CD. I was looking for the Whicker's World theme when I happened upon this NFL-sounding piece; Graham De Wilde's "Newsweek" theme. In fact, I swear this has been used recently by NFL Films: I can hear the voice of John Facenda: "Don Shula and the Miami Dolphins had one mission: stop Larry Brown...and punish him." Oakland Raiders vs. Washington Redskins. You'll hear it approximately at the 3:22 mark when the Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett is releasing the football in one of those marvelous camera shots of the ball in the air that NFL Films is famous for. They probably have used it other times as well, but this was the one time I recall it being used because I remembered the huge Marlboro billboard in the backround as the ball is spiraling in the air.
