SEASON 1:

The Seth MacFarlane animated series which premiered in 2005. Take place in the same universe as his other animated series.

I admit the show didn't really strike me the first time I saw it, 'cause I was expecting something more like "Family Guy" and as a result I didn't see many episodes and didn't watch many re-runs, so I am giving it another chance. Plus, you know, the composers.

The theme music is by Walter Murphy.

NOTE: Archive.org has a wonky video player. You must wait for the page to fully load, then click on the episode in the list to make the correct episode play, regardless of the link you use. Otherwise the video player will just load the first episode in the list. And if the page doesn't load fully, it will also fail to play or play the wrong episode. Archive.org pages tend to load slowly, so be patient.

Attention readers: I have been implementing a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to.

The pilot -- which I haven't seen in many years, is way better than I thought.

They met each other in college.

Roger squirts out the ... liquid "once every seven hours, like clock work".

Oh, and here is the un-aired demonstration pilot, which is pretty much just the opening of the regular pilot, except with a different look to Steve and a different voice for Steve:

Steve: "Why? You wanna do it with me? You're sick!"

Roger: "We can't all look like those anorexic aliens in the James Cameron movies."

Roger: "Oh God, I got a bear claw in my ass."

Hayley: "How come you never search Steve?"
Stan: "Now, honey, I love you both, but Seven is not a Left-wing liberal who I tried to raise properly but somehow--"

Wow, tow blow job jokes and a penis joke in one episode.

It's only been three weeks that Hayley has known Jeff, Jeff was seen in te pilot. Between the pilot and the second episode, the terror alert level was moved down, so that means some time had to pass, so that means the first three episodes take place in-'verse in under three weeks.

    (NtM: 14:44, 16:31/gif)

Stan: "What the hell is wrong with that girl? Do I have to smell like B.O. and hump a redwood to get threw to her?"

Francine: "It's okay, honey, you don't look like a giant penis."

Francine: "Awww, isn't he sweet, Stan?"
Stan: "He sure is; next time I'm out of Jolly Ranchers, I'm just going to suck on Jeff."

Stan: "You know she's stripping, showing people her HoHos, her Ding Dongs, her Suzie Q's, her, her, ah, God w-w-w-what are those things called? Those, ah, those little pink with coconut, there-they're really good."
    Jeff: "Her Snowballs?"
    Stan: "You bastard!"
Jeff: "I didn't know she was stripping!"
Stan: "Don't like to me, Stoneman!"
Jeff: "For real; she said she was out torching SUV's. I'd never be cool with stripping."
    Stan: "Really?"
Jeff: "Yeah, I mean, I've dated three strippers and two of them turned up dead and the cops always go to the boyfriend with the van. That's profiling, man -- and that's wrong."
Stan: "Well, that's the price you pay for the sweet pleasure of van ownership."

Stan: "Hey, Jackson, you ever do it with a dead mermaid?"
    Jackson: "Mermaid? No."

Stan: "Go on, kids, give them a squeeze; it's not weird -- I'm your dad."

Stan: "She said it was the most compassionate act she'd ever witnessed. And I got to kill something. It was a magical moment."

    Roger: "You got TiVo?"

Stan: "I knew you couldn't resist a Federally-funded 'Dynasty' exhibit."

Stan: "Nobody threatens my family. Now get out of the way or I'll shoot you all." (to his family)

Stan: "Huh. What's this? Some kind of tear-like substance coming from my eye."
    Steve: "He's crying."
Stan: "I'm not a lady!" points his firearm at Steve.

Way, way, way more enjoyable than I thought. I'm actually really enjoying this.

I watched the first episode back when it premiered in 2005 and was not impressed -- seemed like a stereotypical sitcom set-up, with the uber-conservative doofus father versus the ultra-lefty hippie daughter.

I wasn't going to watch it, but a friend of mine from college mentioned the scene from "Homeland Insecurity" (S01E06) where Stan pretends to be an OB/GYN to spy on his new Iranian neighbors.

I went back and watched the previous 5 episodes to catch up and have been hooked ever since. In fact, over the last few years, I actually look forward to watching a new TBS "American Dad" episode more than any new FOX "Family Guy" episode...

Love American Dad!, it has some truly brilliant episodes. Roger has to be one of the greatest TV characters ever and I love Sir Patrick Stewart on this show.

As with Family Guy, some of the score is really excellent.

So, Roger says he goes threw his "reproductive time" every six years. In this episode he is going through it again. Stan says he's seen the diagram that Roger draws to show people how it works, so that means he had to do this once before. This means Stan and Roger made that escape at least six years ago.

Man, I got to say ... I know it's a cartoon, but what Stan does to Roger in this episode is ... really horrible. In a series where characters remember what they did to each other ... how does Roger ever get over this?

Why isn't anybody worried that two people saw Roger? Not even trying to hide him.

    (NtM: 0:31, 6:05, 7:19, 13:00, 4:13/gif, 7:44/gif, 19:45/gif, 20:47/gif, 711:09)

1:36 in: MV makes a guest appearance. ;-)

5:12 in: continuity error -- no sound of the car running over the cement parking block.
Also: how did Roger get out of the car trunk? There'd have to be an inside release handle and back then I don't think makes/models had those. And it cant' be because Stan (off screen) made his one phone call to let Francine know he was in jail -- he'd spite Roger for the stung and if Roger had answered, he'd have hung up on him. I guess it's possible Roger held it to the touch.

    (NtM: 1:36/gif, 7:45/gif, 8:22/gif, 8:37/gif, 12:25/gif, 13:06)

    This episode is just creepy.

Sooo ... Roger now knows about what's in Stan's bedroom third drawer now, right?

Yes, I did stop to count that number of stripes on the American flag on Stan's work desk, and yes it is thirteen.

Oh, and I'd like to point out the music editor's name is Stan Jones. Like a combo of Stan Smith and Ron Jones; holy coincidences, Batman!
(Well, holy crap -- I just searched to see if there was a Steve Murphy, and there is! One music department credit on IMDb for consulting on Dolby sound)

Roger: "We should probably leave a note."

Francine: "Doctor; I didn't go to school for twelve hours to be called 'mom'!"

Stan: "How do I say this nicely? Loser! Loser! Loser!" (making a finger "L" on each of Steve's friend's heads)

Francine turns 40 years old in this episode.

Trivia: In a bizarre joke, the newspaper headline in the opening credits this episode says Rob Schneider is dead at the age of 62. In real life he's not only not dead, he was not even 62 when that episode aired; not even close.
And in real life Wendy Schaal -- who voices Francine -- was not in an episode of "Scarecrow and Mrs. King". She was, however, in a number of old classic TV series.
In real life there was no movie called "Dr. Love" that George Clooney was in.

    Migrant Kid: "Water break, boss?"
Roger: "Oh, honey, don't call me 'boss' -- that makes me feel like some kind of monster. Call me dad."
    Migrant Kid: "Water break, dad?"
    Roger: "No."

Stan thinks "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is garbage.

Six months has passed in'verse, and Steve and Roger were in the attic for most of the time, so any future episodes with them means they take place about six months or more after this episode.

10:16 in: Is that original "West Side Story" music or a re-creation?

Actually, the whole premise of kidnaping baby doesn't work like Stan says. Once you cross out of your state's lines and enter another state, it becomes a Federal crime and the F.B.I. gets involved. You don't get to just give away or sell a baby like that.

Stan: "When will I learn? Every time I let a man take a picture of me in the bathroom, it goes bad."

Stan: "Wow, that's a good strong handshake, young man. You remind me of the kids from 'Old Yeler'. Come one -- let's go shoot your dog."

I'd also like those two telethon source cues that are heard after Roger plays his keyboard twice (11:09 and 13:17).

13:00 in: You know what would have been a delightful surprise? Had that been the same bear from "The Critic" and it stopped and attack Jay Sherman in the audience.

Trivia: Stan mentions "The Ghost Whisperer" was still on the air. And yes, it was. But less than two years later it aired its final episode.

    (NtM: 9:50, 10:20/11:09/13:17)

    "Stan Time"

Casual opening dialogue: Francine killed her college room mate by stabbing her. No, it's not a plot point, just a casual throw-away line.

You know, a season or two ago Stan was asking the family in the closing of an episode why they even have Roger anymore, and if anyone seriously even likes him.

Scotty is Steven's favorite "Star Trek" character.

So in this episode Roger says he hasn't seen the Logans in seventeen years, so that means sometime from then and when Stan got Roger out of the C.I.A. base, was probably ten years of less that Roger wasn't being held.

    (NtM: 10:21/gif, 17:56/gif)

Stan: "You defiled my moment, son, right in front of my wife."

    "Live and Let Fry"
    By: Joel McNeely
    https://archive.org/details/familyguy69/American+Dad+S04E11+Live+and+Let+Fry.mp4

This is McNeely's first effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 4:55 in.^
  • 6:44 in.^
  • 7:13/7:54 in.^
  • 9:03 in.^
  • 13:31/14:14/14:57 in.^
  • 16:41 in.^
  • 20:15 in.^

Based upon this first score, McNeely is a very much welcomed addition to the show. Sad it had to be because Jones left.
I first noticed McNeely on the show back when I saw an episode that was a parody of "Back to the Future", where he parodied the score, too. Back when I saw it on television way back when.

Wait ... how does Roger get news? Somebody would have to tell him, and if anybody does that, Roger will inevitably find out.

Delightful -- yet another episode with the black private investigator. The previous one turned out to be a big disappointment. Hopefully this means he'll be in many more future episodes. I don't want to be spoiled, so I'm not going to look it up.

    (NtM: 2:20/gif, 9:01/gif)

Stan: "Poor Roker -- he'll always be fat."

Stan: "Oh, God yes -- I want you in my mouth!"

Steve: "Can I have a bunny?"
Stan: "To kill?" in an excited voice.
    Steve: "Nooo, to love."
    Stan: "Ah, geez."

  • 17:48 in.^

Aside from bad episodes, this is the first episode to really feel inferior. According to IMDb, this was the sixth episode to be written by Brian Obyle (who si also an executive producer on the show). Thankfully -- going by his IMDb credits -- he didn't write to many episodes.

The Trivia page for the episode on IMDb says the second house burning is the house of Hank Hill on "King of the Hill", but it's got only some similarities; more is different than the same: some of the windows aren't right, the colors are wrong, the bushes along the long=side from are wrong, and a row of property-diving bushes which isn't in the show.
