I never actually owned this score on CD...until today. All the talk about the rejected Goldsmith score got me searching for any copies on the web, and lo and behold, there was one, for a fiver, on eBay. I remembered quite liking it in the film, which I saw at the cinema, back when it was released. It's actually a pretty great score. It creates the perfect mood for the drama it underscores. Suspenseful, but never dull or boring. And there's a beautiful, tragic vibe to the softer theme, which if I recall correctly, captures the Pesci character to a tee. I hear faint strains of similarly great scores, by the likes of James Newton Howard (GUILTY BY SUSPICION) and Christopher Young (I can't pick out a title right now, but I deffo hear his vibe in some tracks). The Isham mood is offset by four lively, well positioned Jazz/Blues Band tracks by Shorty Rogers, that help keep the score mood from becoming too much of the same thing. A pretty great release overall. Any other fans of this music out there? I'll be interested to hear the Goldsmith effort (a friend's copy) for comparison.

You're probably thinking of The Hurricane by Christopher Young. BTW - even though Young wrote the score seven years later, I feel confident that he didn't go to Burwell's work for inspiration. Young, as a practice, has always punched up).

Only if there’s stock in Jerry Goldsmith! I’m not meaning any offence in this it just so often feels things are judged here by ‘the man’ rather than the music. ..And I’m a Goldsmith fan .. (second favourite ever score is Jerry’s)
