I was already excited for this film, but wow - Ross & Reznor conjures up something they've never done before here. It's like an old orchestral film noir score from those clips. I just love how composers that are usually pigeonholed into one particular style, branches out and shows off an impressive versatility.

Jeepers! Real music from R&R! Whodathunkit? Fantastic, and the show looks like fun too. (Set myself a reminder on Netflix so I won't miss the December 4 release.)

I would!

I was already a big fan of their previous, more ambient-oriented work, but I just knew they had the musicaliity in them to branch out into new territory.

The previous work I've heard by Reznor & Ross hasn't been my my cup of tea, but I'm intrigued by this. Listening to the music on the website, it sounds like David Fincher asked them to compose the music they believe they would've composed had they been alive & making music in the 1940s. I don't know if that's actually what Fincher's direction was, but that's what it sounds like. The more brooding parts of Bernard Herrmann's score for "Citizen Kane" also seems like a point of reference for them.

The most surprising (and best) part about the music on the website is the warmth and brightness of the strings. Very nice!

One observation is that IMO it sounds a lot more like the kind of score a P.T. Anderson movie would have. I don't think any Fincher score has sounded even vaguely "retro" before - even "Zodiac" sounded pretty modern to me, despite being by David Shire (it was also a very sparse score, and very much in the background - the music everybody remembers from that film are the period songs).

I'm looking forward to this film and hearing the score in context.

The fact that Reznor-Ross are scoring a black-and-white biopic of Joseph Mankiewicz makes me think we're living in an alternate universe, where FSMers enthuse over black-and-white films about Golden Age Hollywood icons, but then I remember MANK is a Netflix production, so of course this happened. wink

I read an interview with Reznor a month or two ago, promoting Watchmen, and he said that was exactly what they were told. smile

This film is pretty clearly Fincher's THE GOOD GERMAN, where he's not just making a period film, but making a film that looks like it was entirely created in that period. Soderbergh and Fincher are good friends, and TGG gave us Soderbergh's only conventional melodic orchestral score so far, and it was gorgeous.

Soderbergh actively avoided them up to that point. I remember an interview where he described seeing The Rocketeer and vowing to the friend he was with that no film he ever made would have a score like that.

I was grateful to see Soderbergh change his tune when it was appropriate, and I'm excited to see what Reznor and Ross have done here, it sounds a lot like The Good German, in the style of the 40s without being a pastiche.

Agreed. Dragon Tattoo and Patriots Day are two of my favorite scores of the last decade, and I can hear hints of them in this. They're far more lyrical than people give them credit for.

From Conrad Pope’s FB page :

Yes. I had a hand in orchestrating the "orchestral bits"of the score. Dan Higgins did the honors with the "jazz"parts the score[\i]

The fact that Reznor-Ross are scoring a black-and-white biopic of Joseph Mankiewicz...

That would be Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, older brother of the aforementioned Joseph L. You seem critical of Netflix for making this picture, and in black and white. So what? The trailer looks pretty entertaining. If you're so smart, why ain't you rich?

Hey, I could have written Ben Mankiewicz!

My incredulity, as it were, was my being pleased that this project has been made.
