Writer Gary Gerani posted on The Night Gallery page on Facebook that composer Billy Goldenberg has died at the age of 84 in New York City. He was certainly the King of Television Movies and Shows.

Much underrated composer. Early mid 70s if you saw his name on a tv score you knew it would be watchable if for only the music. Lizzie Borden was a masterpiece

Sad to hear this. I remember him particularly from is early Spielberg collaborations and Columbo. Unsurprisingly, I am especially fond of DUEL, which is also one of my favorite Spielberg films.

A great loss. He never really got the credit he deserved to 1970s Universal TV.

he also did LA 2017 for Steven Spielberg

Saddened to read this news. He was a big part of my childhood/youth, and for many of us he kind of defined THE '70s TV sound for mystery, murder and the supernatural. Just thinking about his TV output from the late '60s into the '70s... he probably dominated my "straight from the TV" cassette tapes more than any other composer. Just off the top of my head I recall that I had the Main Titles (plus some episode segments with the inevitable dialogue and sound effects) for FEAR NO EVIL, NIGHT GALLERY, DUEL, GHOST STORY, THE LAST OF SHEILA, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, COLUMBO, ONE OF MY WIVES IS MISSING... I think that that particular Billy Goldenberg sound, with those unusual melodic leaps, key changes and inventive chord structures can be heard very noticeably in Columbo's RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN, THE LAST OF SHEILA, the final sequence of ONE OF MY WIVES IS MISSING... and probably encapsulated in less than a minute in his theme for THE SIXTH SENSE. I never had any of those LP releases (RED SKY AT MORNING - I think this was mentioned by Chris Malone in the latest Goldsmith Odyssey podcast - THE GRASSHOPPER etc), and his work isn't well represented on CD, but we can thank the labels for DUEL, BUSTING and two of his scores for AMAZING STORIES (THE AMAZING FALSWORTH and WHAT IF?). Oh yes, of course, and FSM's HIGH RISK on the TV Omnibus. Those are the Goldenbergs I have on CD. Am I missing anything? I've always considered DUEL to be one of the best score CDs ever released. It gets a 10 outta 10 from me. RIP Billy Goldenberg. He was great.

I always forget that he wrote the Main Theme to one of my favourite TV series as a kid, ALIAS SMITH & JONES*. Me and me Dad would tune in religiously every week and the theme was exceptional. I'd love LLL or Intrada to stick out a CD containing a highlights from the series collection. That would be a Day-One purrrr-chase for me. *thanks to CL for providing the link above (thumbs-up)
