Does anyone else find the relative sparsity of reissues for this score rather bizarre? '

I read up on it in the "Scoring for Movies" book, and am really interested that it's one of his more experimental scores.

Varese have it in perpetuity. Strange that they haven't reissued it.

I wouldn't really call it experimental.
A lot of it has that gentle, folksy homespun Americana music that Goldsmith used for lots of his 70s TV movie work.
Even the horror stuff isn't as jagged or demonic as something like MEPHISTO WALTZ. Now that's experimental.
Very strange that Varese haven't given this a standalone deluxe upgrade edition yet. But then they are sitting on a ton of stuff.

Now you have me interested in MEPHISTO WALTZ!

You can pick em both up on one CD via the old Varese CD release, WA.

What's bizarre is that Fox was granting perpetuity rights to Varese back then -- when I interviewed him recently I learned that Bruce Kimmel, who brought that Mephisto Waltz/The Other project to Varese in the first place had no idea that was the case at the time!
http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/902063-odyssey-interviews-bruce-kimmel

So Varese actually *did* reissue this once, in their now sold out Little Box of Horrors:
https://www.ebay.com/i/122898513811?chn=ps

But we don't need more reissues for The Other. We desperately need an EXPANSION at this point. Bruce said he would have done this long ago at Kritzerland except that Varese turned out to control it. So despite only releasing a single track suite from the score as a bonus in the 90s, like Escape from the Planet of the Apes only Varese can expand it....except for a nice little loophole in that Twilight Time was able to include an isolated score as a bonus on their Blu-ray release of the film (same with the two Flint scores, also controlled in perpetuity by Varese on album). A bonus on a home video release of a film does not count as an "album" I guess, fortunately. We'll have to content ourselves with that track (despite maintaining film edits and not strictly speaking complete as recorded), at least until Varese wakes up to the desire for a complete release of the score.

Can anyone tell me more about the MW/Other split cd, as far as sound, annotation, etc. I'd be very grateful.

Under $20 at Discogs:
https://www.discogs.com/Jerry-Goldsmith-The-Mephisto-Waltz-The-Other-Soundtrack/master/690063

(Under $10 as a download from Amazon, if you don't need it physically.)

The sound is pretty good, though I'm sure a reissue could be better. The Other is squished into a single 23 minute long track, particularly annoying since there's a piece of source music in the middle of it all. When Varese released their Goldsmith at Fox box set, they had three individual cues/tracks from the score represented. But when they reissued the CD in their Little Box of Horrors set, it was back to the suite.

Mephisto Waltz has individual tracks and is supposed to be complete, length-wise. But I've heard there are overlays ands sweeteners that couldn't be located at the time, so it's incomplete and imperfect from that perspective. It's a *very* modern and avant garde score I confess I don't listen to a whole lot though, even though I do admire it.

THANKS Yavar! I can spend more money on the stuff I got stolen...GOT to pick up First Blood again (I gave it another chance on youtube and LOVED it...Arthur Morton really helped our beloved JG action flicks with his orchestration, I love the use of muted piano for percussion in particular, it's SO JG).

A very beautiful, creepy, and intriguing score for a very disturbing film. The isolated track on the blu-ray sounds excellent, far better than the suite included on "The Mephisto Waltz" soundtrack. There is also more music on the isolated track than there is in the film. Seeing as the materials are in great shape, Goldsmith is a top seller, and there is a solid market for horror soundtracks, it probably isn't too long before Varese comes back to this.

Please make it a 2CD release, The Mephisto Waltz with overlays on disc1 and The Other complete on disc2.
Then do the same with a remastered Planet of the Apes and a reissued Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
Then give us physical reissues of Lionheart and The 'Burbs.
And please, within the next month.
Thank you, Varese.

I'd also be fine with two separate single disc editions, but hell if Varese is willing to do a 2 disc set for Mephisto/The Other I guess it would save us money and I'm all for that!

A two disc complete release with both Flint scores makes even more sense as a single release pairing, IMO.

Is this Fantasy Football for soundtracks? If Varese was going to expand THE OTHER, I would have expected it before the same old reissue in their Horror Box. Given their low output, I wouldn't expect anything now.

While I would love to have a fully proper releases(s) on both of these scores, I am grateful for what we got. Some of you Goldsmith fans, like me, may have seen The Mephisto Waltz in the theatre when it came out and couldn't get that driving, horrifying music out of your head, or read Page Cook's Films in Review article on his favorite scores of the year while he gave the #2 position to The Other . . . and thought: "Where the hell are the albums?" Well, it took a while, but that Fox cd finally came out.

The Blu-Ray's isolated score was particularly instructive regarding the unused cues. Almost a third of the score was cut out, mostly in the last 30 minutes. The scene when the one brother goes downstairs at night to see the coffin is just a beautiful piece of scoring, the theme at it's most ghostly. But someone decided just hearing the wind outside with no music was better. Maybe they didn't want the film to be seen as a horror film so much, they wanted those elements downplayed.

Both THE MEPHISTO WALTZ and THE OTHER are top notch Goldsmith scores. I'm not familiar with the movie so I don't know if and what there is missing from the suite Varèse Sarabande released, but that suite is very good as it is. The sound quality is less than ideal though.

It's not the wild, all-out horror of The Mephisto Waltz or The Omen, but it's haunting nonetheless. It opens with a beguiling bucolic melody and ends with a piece as utterly desolate and cold as anything Goldsmith wrote. The movie remains sorely underrated to this day.

Interesting...was this piece in the Varese suite?

Hi. No it wasn't. Going by the Blu-Ray, the score's length is about 42 minutes, so the suite is only about half of it.
