You need to update that headline.

It says retire from STAR WARS, not from composing music or doing scores.

I figured that would be the case. Not to be morbid, but it would be unwise to start a new series at his age. I'll miss his music like crazy though.

He should retire. Well deserved. Frankly I don't think his music fits in with today's narrative. Time to move on.

Thanks! Wouldn't want to give people a heart attack.

Thankfully, Williams has said that he will continue composing untill the day he dies.

But I always expected him to retire from STAR WARS after IX. So no big surprise to me, personally.

As Kirk once said, "Galloping around the galaxy is for the young." I'm not a fanatic. The best of talents, artists, athletes, visionaries, philosophers have their prime. Sometimes it's best to move on.

Don't disagree with you in theory. But in this case, several of Williams' scores of the 2010s are among my very favorites. So I'm not in any hurry to see Williams retire. Not at all.

Is writing Star Wars music more strenuous on him? 'cause if it's not and he either doesn't want to or can't continue scoring them, then it's only a matter of time before he feels the same way about any film. Perhaps he may retire completely before he dies. I wouldn't blame him for wanting to just enjoy life before it's too late.

I think after nine films (plus one theme for "Solo"), he may well feel like "That's about all I have to say about that."

That, and I do think Star Wars films and any big blockbusters are more challenging and strenuous. The films are often being edited right up to the last minute to accommodate visual FX and there's a lot more marks to hit in the music. As well, there's the tendency to want to have these films scored wall-to-wall, as opposed to something like Lincoln or The Post.

Chris.

I suspect that is not only what he IS doing, but what he HAS BEEN doing for the past 50+ years.

As far as Star Wars scores go, I think its been diminishing results with each new film. I'm including the trilogy, prequels and sequels. As much as I try, I just can't get into Force Awakens or Last Jedi. They don't leave an impression with me. They're very journeymen like for sure, but I don't find them memorable or have a desire to revisit them. A part of all this is the musical climate in Hollywood too though. I would be more interested in seeing what Debney, JNH, or McNeely could do. (among many other composers)

I'm of that thinking, too. In fact, I got a step beyond and say none of these new Star Wars films are worth a toot. And it doesn't seem like they're getting any better.

So with that line of thinking, I'm glad he's likely not going to stick around and have his name attached to some of these things.

Some John Debney and Don Davis (in the creative fun "Seaquest" mode) would be nice.

Just glad he WANTS to do IX. Never expected him to keep going... we are so lucky to have gotten a 3rd trilogy out of him.

Fair enough. I don't happen to agree with you – in fact, "The Force Awakens" is my third favorite "Star Wars" score (after the first two) – but there you have it. Personally, I like zero Debney scores and maybe a couple of McNeelys – I dread those names on scores – but again, just an opinion.

I retired from the series with TFA, which is a point I've labored too much on this board.

Beyond that though, the fact that fans(?) are looking forward to more stories beyond the Skywalker family plot (and thus, the arch style writing that the series is cribbed in since its suppose to be mythological) means that this thing has already molted into an ugly, stupid machine of commercialization. And that means that Williams is stepping off at a good time, because his musical style in the past films won't match with the dreck Disney is gonna bang out like 1820s French charnel house.

That, and I do think Star Wars films and any big blockbusters are more challenging and strenuous. The films are often being edited right up to the last minute to accommodate visual FX and there's a lot more marks to hit in the music.

And this is just me guessing, but I get the sinking feeling that a director like Abrams and Johnson - who don't have the same long-standing relationship with Williams and are part of a newer generation where everything is done in a rushed post-production - don't give Mr Williams the same amount of elbow room to write like Lucas and Spielberg do. "Newer" composers are more use to these types of constant deadlines and the amount of music each Star Wars film needs is incredible.

This is why I felt Episode VII and VIII were largely lackluster but the end credits suites were pure Williams magic? Maybe? I could be wrong.

THE FORCE AWAKENS was a superb film (in my top 10 that year), THE LAST JEDI was a pretty good film (in my top 20). But Williams' score for TFA is leagues ahead of the sequel, even if I found that somewhat disappointing too.

But three's the charm. He did it with HARRY POTTER 3. Let's hope he does it with STAR WARS 9.

Artists who only serve their "prime" aren't selfish enough to be artists.
