Hans Zimmer has been tapped to score the upcoming superhero movie X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The film marks the directorial debut of writer/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martian, Deadpool) and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. Kinberg is also producing the project with Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects), Hutch Parker & Lauren Shuler Donner (Logan). Zimmer’s involvement was mentioned by actor Evan Peters on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. We previously heard that the composer was scoring the film this past December, but it was unclear whether he would be sharing scoring credit with anyone else. Zimmer has previously scored the Kinberg-produced sci-fi movie Chappie and Kinberg-scripted Sherlock Holmes. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to be released on November 2, 2018 by 20th Century Fox.
I knew it BS that he retired from scoring anymore superhero movies after Batman V Superman.

I found out about it late November.
As I wrote later about it:
Two or three times I've found Zimmer listed as a composer on somebody's resume (be it an orchestra, a music editor, an orchestra, etc.) and later on it turns out he did only some or produced and somebody else scored it or he dropped out and somebody else from Camp Zimmer scored it, so we'll see.

I would think, based on previous form, that Zimmer would collaborate with one of his pupils. Hoping for a Zimmer /Powell or Zimmer /Jackman combo. However since Zimmer has worked with the Junk on BvS that could be a real possibility.
I've noticed that the Zimmer I DON'T like has featured XL as a collaborator (the latter's music does even less for me). So I really, really hope that doesn't happen. I realize that he might have been fudging a bit when he didn't credit XL for Man of Steel, but at least nominally he did that by himself, so I'd much rather he stayed solo.
That said, I'm not much into with what Zimmer's done since Interstellar (which I thought was both a decent film and good score). Just me.

Henry Jackman didn't ruin the franchise when he scored First Class.
Why is Zimmer going to ruin the franchise by scoring Dark Phoenix?
I mostly like the main theme in First Class, but Henry did a fine, Zimmeresque job on both that and Winter Soldier imo. Sure, it's nothing new, but this was before the Zimmer/Zebra-oversaturation really starting ruining things from not just Henry but many other of Hans' de facto disciples.
I think the abovmentioned oversaturation of the "Zimmer sound" (as well as what from manifold opinions seems a lesser effort with Dunkirk) is what people are afraid of.
It might be that the world (most certainly including the old school score fans) are kind of burned out on the abovementioned sound...I'm personally, mostly concerned with Zimmer's collaborations ala the pretty lame (imo) Batman vs Superman soundtrack. Unlike the excellent-fruit-bearing match with James Newton-Howard, I think Junkie Xl was a real bad collaborative decision on his part, making the sound at times too effected and sound designy to be considered a "score" in the traditional sense. Of course, many would consider what XL brought to the table an example of what's contemporary, a step away from the tried and true (or at least musical in the conventional definition).
I'm all for stretching the boundaries of music (big enthusiast of serial composition, 12 tone experimentation, and sound design in general). I simply, personally just feel XL sucks...and I've already heard too much by him. But I'm fairly old, so my opinion probably means less than zero anyway.
I'm tired of the sound myself. But he could really break through once more with this score...as long as he keeps the young 'uns out of it as much as he can (I've read that with the legion of ghostwriters and orchestrators and arrangers he uses that might be impossible).

Whoever Zimmer works with, it will be interesting. Zimmer/JNH approach is quite different to what we heard TASM 2 and BvS. I'd like to see a JNH/Zimmer combo again. I really enjoyed The Dark Knight Trilogy scores, particularly the first two with JNH.
I'm a total weirdo...I do like the Dark Knight and would also not mind seeing Hans with James again, but Dark Knight Rises was my favorite of the lot. I so love the chorus he wrote, the cool rhythmic synth things, etc. And yeah, I'm REALLY weird, that was my favorite Batman movie (ducks). I only like the fun 60s series better.
