The son of one of my best friends is a budding John Williams fans, so I went onto Amazon.com last night to buy him the soundtrack from Return of the Jedi (I gave him A New Hope last year, his gran just got him Empire for Christmas). No big deal I thought -- they pressed millions of those things. I figured I could find a used "good condition" copy for peanuts.

I was surprised -- and dismayed -- to discover Jedi appears to be out of print. Amazon does not have the Sony Classical edition in stock, and used copies of the Sony CD start at nearly $69. Someone is selling the RCA edition for about $11 (but most used copies of the RCA Jedi are $50 and up).

But it isn't only Jedi. The Sony Classical A New Hope is "currently unavailable" on Amazon, with used copies going for $55 and up. Used copies of the RCA New Hope start at $33.

The Sony Empire Strikes Back is listed at $40 new on Amazon -- or would be were it not "out of stock". Used copies for that same CD start at $72 on Amazon, and that's "used-good" condition. The RCA Empire is going for $21.85 in "used-good" condition.

And the Arista box set? $33 for "used-acceptable" from an Amazon private seller -- however you can find copies on Ebay for $20. The price ranges on Ebay for all of the later RCA / Sony titles is similar to those on Amazon though.

Bottom line -- if you don't have these scores, I'd go and snatch them up now! (And I know, the idea that any soundtrack collector hasn't owned the Star Wars CDs for years seems ludicrous -- but in my case, I was so fixated on all the limited editions of more arcane titles, I actually didn't get around to buying the expanded SW discs until a few years ago).

Oh, and on a lark I checked iTunes to see if the original trilogy scores are a least still available for download (in case a meteor ever falls on my house and need to replace my collection). Well, iTunes does have listings for all three scores -- but these are only the original, un-expanded releases (including the paltry 40-min. Jedi).

I wasn't expecting the Star Wars CDs to be in print forever, but seriously, we can't even download the expanded editions? I mean this is Star Wars after-all. There is a whole new generation of kids who are just getting into these movies -- and their scores (my friend's son for one).

However, there is a little good news -- a used copy of A New Hope Readalong Storybook and CD will only set you back about six bucks. roll eyes

As per the other thread (http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=124273&forumID=1&archive=0), Sony's license expired earlier this year hence they are no longer able to sell Star Wars soundtracks. All Star Wars soundtracks issued by Sony are now OOP.

The rights have reverted to Disney. At the moment they have only issued the original soundtrack albums. No doubt at some point the expanded reissues (either the same as the Sonys or hopefully new ones) will be forthcoming.

The rights for releasing Star Wars scores reverted from Sony Classical to Disney Records in January 2017. The only thing they currently have in print is the OST presentations of the six original films, and this includes digitally.

Their removal from the market is maybe a sign that truly definitive expansions (including the tiny bits of missing music, as well as resolving the sound issues) are coming in the (near?) future? Hopefully.

With that said, here is a collection that includes all three "special editions" (as well as the OSTs for the prequels) for $45-52 depending on seller. Get it now before it's gone!

Replying - sorry, I see that he already has SW and ESB. For just ROTJ, that link might not be ideal for you - unless he doesn't also have TPM, AOTC, and ROTS - in which case, $45 is still a steal for just those four scores.

I recently saw the Sony double-diskers (used, of course) in a FYE store selling for $11 a pop.

They were printed in such high quantities that I can't imagine they aren't sitting on big box store shelves in some capacity for retail price. Best Buy, FYE, maybe even some Targets or Wal Marts.

The Internet gets a whiff of Out of Print, and they price gauge like crazy. Anything for a buck.

I'm sure a reasonable price is out there.

I have one of those 2CD A New Hope expansions I'd let go for a reasonable price. Just sayin'.

I have one of those 2CD (A New Hope) expansions and it ain't going nowhere. Same with the original RSO Star Wars 2-fer. What a pity the fuller expansions didn't exist at the point in time when it all meant so much to me. Still, pleased to have something from vanishing times.

I still have the black slipcase ones with the funky designs on the discs.

I have those too. Those cases, and especially the slipcovers, have gotten a lot of wear and tear. The CDs had a bunch of surface scratches, too, from being pulled in and out of the envelope so frequently. Still played great though - never had a problem with any CDs getting that scratched up.

I often thought about replacing them for the in-print jewel case editions, but those were missing the great liner notes so I never got around to it.

Yes, hopefully...though Disney don't seem to have much interest in physical media. I have a feeling this is the end of the road as far as CDs of the Star Wars scores (and a lot of other music to which Disney holds the rights).

I can accept the SW scores only being offered as downloads -- but not if the only versions available are the original albums (especially when the "remastered" release of Empire has all the same mastering glitches that afflicted the old LP).

Disney still puts almost all of their OSTs (notable exceptions being a small handful of Pixar albums and Marvel albums, most eventually released by Intrada) out on physical, and all of their expansions (for instance, this year's Robin Hood expansion, and next year's Beauty and the Beast expansion). They also seem to have invested heavily in Collectors' Favorite Stupid Old Physical Format. So I wouldn't say they've written off physical products in any significant way.

If the market is still there, I would have thought Star Wars is a likely candidate to be made available on all formats to reach the widest possible audience, particularly as it is still an active film series (even more so now).

What does all this mean then, I'm perplexed what's going on with these labels.

I own the Arista Box + Black slip cases holographic discs.

You own everything there is to own from the original trilogy, unless you want the older OST releases which are arranged a little differently than the Arista box. This thread should mean nothing to you wink

Thanks for the info, labelled/scores do sometimes disappear so suddenly like, Zombie-Land, I paid £5, I look now its at least 30, just curious what the shuffling was. wink

Let's hope Disney realizes how bad the ESB remix is and commissions a new one.

I just hope if Disney do get around to giving ALL the JW/SW scores a remaster/revamp, JW or HIS PEOPLE demand/ensure that Mike M is put in charge of the restoration work.

As far as the original albums, while I like having the near-complete music and discrete tracks heard on the Arista and RCA/Sony discs (and believe they should remain available), I honestly prefer some of the editorial decisions John Williams made for the original albums. I like how he combines different cues (and trims some of the "fat"), and generally find them to be a better listening experience.

The original Jedi album is a debacle though!

Yes, I too own the Arista box + the black slip cases holographic discs. I would just like to add that I acquired the Arista box only about 6 months ago and what a superb listen it is. I feel it is more resentative of the score, as heard in the film, than the back slip cased discs - even though they are superb as well. But perhaps my impression is wrong in that?
