Another TV issue - A show on one of the Paranormal Channels (FKA Science, Sci; part of the former Discovery Network, now Paranormal Network); two fellows are sitting at a table in a diner when suddenly a wayward automobile comes crashing thru the front of the place, smashing into their table. Fortunately neither was seriously hurt.
The kicker - they were both "PSYCHICS"!
Hello?

  • Almost every sci fi film- "Shields at 75% Captain! Shields at 30%. Our shields can't take one more hit!"
All that technobabble does nothing to add to the drama.

Sometimes I wonder, regarding the original episode "The Ultimate Computer", what if the M-5 had worked as designed? What would that Star Trek be like?

    Interesting. Actually, Fascinating!

However it wound up, Fleet Admiral Kirk would have to be in charge. After all, he was the only one able to outsmart M-5 (and Daystrom) and Nomad and save humanity!

In thrillers where a guy whos on the run from bad guys / dirty cops/ eastern european gangsters whatever, rings his girlfriend to warn her but instead of telling her the crucial stuff "Baby, no shit, this is life of death, bad guys are after me, dont go home!!!" They either talk in a convoluted way n lose signal, or the girl gets the hump over something innocuous n slams the phone down and is then unobtainable.
Always the same, lazy filmmaking, and such a cheap n contrived way to make a tense plot. frown

Are handcuffs really that easy to open with a paperclip? I've seen a few films lately where that's done. And the old trick of opening a locked door that has a Vale like lock, stick one wire in, & then stick another wire in, & wiggle it about, it works every time...in the movies.

Hero tries to operate a flying vessel (plane, starship, pegasus, etc), but can't get control of it and plummets straight to the ground, the last stretch of the fall masked by some overgrowth or what not...

... go ahead, guess what happens next...

    ... g'head...

... yep, you're a psychic (or you've seen this billions of times), the hero pulls up just in time to fly right toward the camera, usually to the blaring triumph of a fanfare.

And of course the hero lets out a whooping "Yahoo!" and has now perfectly mastered the controls of the flying contraption and can pull crazy barrel rolls for fun.

Almost every sci fi film- "Shields at 75% Captain! Shields at 30%. Our shields can't take one more hit!"
All that technobabble does nothing to add to the drama.

Almost every sci fi film? Like BLADE RUNNER, THE THING, METROPOLIS...

I'd call METROPOLIS a masterpiece if only they'd left that part out.

More on TV-shows than in film, and maybe not so much now but:
A: "text, text, text, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, text, text."
    B: "Say that again"
    A: "What?"
    B: "Bla, bla"
A repeats the section bla, bla, bla, bla, bla
    B: "That's it, there's the clue"

B clearly knows what A said as is evident from B being able to point out where A has to repeat and the section to be repeated by B so what's with the unnecessary theatrics of having B repeat that section.

A bloody annoying waste of time.

You still get a lot of supposedly dead people breathing in & out like a good'n. There was a UK TV hospital drama last week, the guy's dead, but he's breathing like he'd just run for a bus. I remember watching Gladiator in the cinema, where Richard Harris is supposed to be lying there dead, you could see his tum going up & down.

Just saw this in Disney + Godmothered-

Talented aspiring singing held back by stage fright.
At climax of film stage fright performer must replace main act who either got sick or was knocked out.
Stage fright performer gingerly goes on stage and starts a song.
After 15 seconds freezes up. Says they can't do it.
Performer looks off stage where someone encourages them to continue.
Performer gingerly begins to sing again and within 10 seconds builds more and more confidence.
The crowd gets into the song.
Suddenly the performer is over their stage fright and are belting out the best song of their life.

...a character on the lam (or some covert government agent) will go into a store, buy a cheap cell phone, and somehow -- between purchasing said phone and hitting the sidewalk outside -- will have removed the phone from its packaging, activated it, made the one call they safely can without getting tracked, and deposit it in the nearest trash receptacle?

Have you TRIED to remove any kind of plastic "blister" packaging without a pair of scissors? It's IMPOSSIBLE. Not to mention that setting up even the cheapest pay-as-you-go cell isn't something you can do on the fly like that, you'd probably need a minimum of fifteen minutes.

This has probably been mentioned given the amount of posts..

A car chase scene. Our good guys (one car) are hopelessly outnumbered by the pursuers (many, many cars). They have dodged, weaved, evaded.....but now they are trapped. Bad guy cars behind them, bad guy cars in front of them - no-where to go.

Except that (now) obvious road/alley/slipway right next to them that the bad guy hadn’t thought to cover. A quick reverse and turn and they’re away to safety.

    Chap in jail:

    Cop: Your lawyer is here.

    Chap: I don't have a lawyer.

Then goes and meets a villain or someone who isn't his lawyer.

Don't they ever check IDs? Is it really that easy to just walk into a jail and randomly visit anyone?

...in any sort of "secret" government lab where cruel experiments are being performed on children, there's always a janitor or maid who not only helps one or more children to escape, but also surreptitiously films evidence of said atrocities to give to the kid(s) in question before they get killed off? How bad is the security in these places when someone pushing a mop or switching the linen can take one of more children out so easily, let alone get video evidence of what they're up to? See Logan and the Stephen King novel The Institute (which I'm currently reading) for examples.

By the time Kirk gained that rank, M-5s would give way to M-2000s, or M2Ks/MK Ultras. Android Trek would be a thing.

Hotshot detective: I got this. It's is a local matter.
FBI Agent: Aw hail naw, son! I'll be taking over this investigation. We don't need HOTSHOT DETECTIVES like you making a mess. Now get outta my face before I whine to your superior.
Hotshot detective: ... I felt that.

Ah yes, the plug-n-play insert, secondary foil for underdog badass heroes: the Beyond Your Paygrade official. At some point, it'll come to this...

    Hotshot detective: I got this.
FBI Agent: No, I got this.
Special armed forces General Muckitymuck: No, I got this.
The President: No, I got this.
Alien hegemony attache: No, I got this.
The Jesus: No, I got this.
    Screenwriter: No, I got this!
Everyone else but the screenwriter: ... do you?

So it goes from Jerry, to you, to the cleaners... right, Kent?

Vampire hunters always seem to set off very late in the day to hunt vampires. Really, they should know to start at the crack of dawn.

In movies or TV shows, beware when a scene begins with children playing outside early in the morning or two lovers strolling happily through a park...a dead body will soon be found leading to a stunned look from the kids/a close-up of the woman screaming.

When ever a child (or pet) wanders to far from its guardian you know something bad is gonna come from it.

I've knocked films before about people using a paperclip to pick a lock (with ease) saying it's impossible, but I think I'll have to eat my words.
