Thats what happens when your news is the grauniad. big grin

Even with a black left back of their own, some Bulgarian fans were giving "racist abuse" to sterling n mings they said. There was some booing and to other white england players too. So i dunno what final outcome was. It was 4 0 and i turned over to watch the Walking Dead.

Norn Iron lost to a resurgent(?) Netherlands 3-1 earlier this week.

Our neighbour is Irish and I'd forgotten they were playing until I heard him cheering through the wall and guessed that they'd scored, which they had.

It was SOOOOO tempting to cheer just as loudly when the Dutch scored, but (a) we've fallen out enough already, and (b) I was quite sorry that they'd been pegged back, given that Stuart Dallas was playing, as well as erstwhile Leeds keeper Bailey Farrell-Peacock.

I like these "Slice of Tall Guy's Life" posts!

Your neighbor wouldn't be "William Ulsterman", would he? wink I'll bet he nearly choked on his "cheddar cheese and pineapple on a stick" when the Dirty Dutch struck paydirt.

I'm thinking of writing a book...

I'm not terribly familiar with the Harry Enfield character, to be honest, but the chap next door likes to come across as overly macho. He has a huge 4x4 which he rarely drives, but just about every weekend he jacks it up and swaps the wheels around. He also refused to pay anything towards the replacement of the crappy fence between his front garden and ours, because "look at the plans - it isn't our responsibility." However, I happen to know he said the same to his neighbour on the other side as well.

And when he thought we were making too much noise doing a bit of DIY in our living room, he sent his teenage son around to complain rather than face us himself. There's a sort of strained civility between us. It's nothing to do with him being Irish - it's to do with him being a git, and being a git recognises no national borders (hard or soft!)

Coincidentally, an Irishman lives next door to me although he's from the south of the country. He and his family were bullies to us from the moment we moved into our house 18 years ago. Recently, one of his daughters, then 15, got knocked up by her over-18 boyfriend and had a subsequent shotgun-wedding--no, we weren't invited. They now live in "Irish's" house, too. Every morning begins with the blasting of Latin hip hop at 9:30am; they are a delight as you no doubt can tell.

The other daughter just wrecks all the family cars, including one time right on our street corner where her 200lb carcass had to be extracted using the "Jaws of Life." Oh, one of our other neighbors, a blonde cabana boy-looking guy who always had a pretty girl in his jeep with him, hanged himself in his own backyard. Dead guy's next-door neighbor happened to see the bloated corpse dangling from the huge tree the next morning.

I have a million stories, but this is the footie thread, where Star Wars and ancient westerns reign supreme. wink

Well, you win. Generally, where we live, you could have a reign of terror with a balloon on a stick.

Interesting analogy!

Paul Reaney? First black player to play for England at any level (full international in 1968) but somehow it’s always Viv Anderson who gets that title.

You boys already have these stats committed to memory, but being a relative newbie to football, I found this Leeds United-West Ham head-to-head results list quite, as Dr Spock would say, "fascinating."

I had no idea - my instinct wud be that their many years of being dominant would outweigh any odd wins we got and that their win record would be much higher than ours. And it is.

Now that I'm officially obsessed with this, here's the Leeds United vs. Liverpool head to head:

Weren't 'Pewl and Leeds both decent to not bad during the 1970s? I'm emphasizing those head-to-head matches.

Sorry, Bill, but I was at the WHU v Leeds game in 98/99 when we got our record win of 5-1. You had two players sent off (or was it three?) and Jimmy Floyd got a hat trick. Great game!

The most significant of all the league games was the 0-0 draw at Anfield in April 1969, where the one point each meant that Leeds pipped Liverpool to the championship, our first of three. At the end of the game, our visionary manager obliged Leeds skipper Billy Bremner to lead the Leeds team over to the kop. To their eternal credit, the fans on the kop rose to acclaim the new champions.

There’s no hiding that our respective records don’t really compare; in any significant way you measure it, Leeds come off second best to Pewel, but there’s a mutual respect engendered by the friendship between managers Revie and Shankly, helped along by the incident above and cemented by our joint distaste for a certain other team geographically located roughly between us.

Another grim performance by Ireland. Lots of huff and puff but no cutting edge. Swiss goalie had nothing to do. Coleman sent off too, though he needs put out to pasture. Have to beat Denmark in final game next month, which isn't going to happen.

I just read Wales have a chance of qualify if they win their last two games. Which seems doable. That'd be nice.
