Pacific Rim 5/10 fun idea, the fight scenes are nicely done, liked the kaiju design. But the writing is terrible. Some of the scenes and ideas seemed ripped from Independence Day but with worse writing. There was zero emotional impact from any of the characters and their fates. The Australian accents were awful. The worst character ànd one of the worst acting performances I have ever seen was from the English comedy relief professor. Truly embarrassing. Also Charlie Hunnam is a personality vacuum. But the film is worth one watch. Honest.

The Wild Bunch 9/10. What a great western, the Blu-ray is showing its age & the film is in real need of a re-master. Only a 9? Man if bunch dont get a ten then nuffin could!! Andromeda strain 7 and a half outta ten havent seen for years. Clever microbiological thriller, well filmed, with several sequences of split screen - a stylish practice that cropped up a few times in 60s and early 70s.

'Whiplash'- Miles Teller and JK Simmons 8 Simmons deserved an Oscar long before he made this film, but he served up exactly the type of performance the Academy loves. Fine film-as-metaphor about making art. Do not mistake this as a story about a student in music school, this is a statement about how artists and art is made. That said, I think there is a better film to be made about a student enduring a conservatory education with the ideas in this film as a subtext. Also- 'Wet Hot American Summer'. 8.5 Seen it once ages ago, but remembered it differently. This is just great, goofy fun satirizing movie tropes from the late 70s, 80s, & 90s

I had a long post written out, going on at length about the Saw series, Cowboys and Aliens, Safe, The Raid 2, Mad Max 1-4, Taxi Driver and The Friends of Eddie Coyle and got timed out, so my ratings for the above will forever have to be a mystery to you. I hope I have better luck after I've seen Spectre tonight.... Very frustrating I know! Nowadays I write my thoughts in notepad then copy and paste into a new thread. Yep - I let it run away a bit and so it took longer than expected, or I'd have done the same. Just as my finger was hitting the "post message" button the thought flashed through my mind that I should have copied and pasted it just in case, but a smidgen too late. I will reprise one part of it, though - Mad Max 1-4 was 6/10, 8/10, 7/10 and 8/10 respectively, and if I had to pick just one, it'd be Road Warrior.

Tales of Halloween 1.5/10 - 8 or 10 short Halloween based stories of which only Ryan Schifrin's I found good fun and the best acted oh and another with Barry Bostwick was alright too. A couple of others have okay ideas and one has some nice weird witch imagery. But mostly it looks cheap, the actual writing and dialogue is mostly garbage and the acting very daytime soapy. Vacation 0/10 - just awful. Plenty of references to the original which remind you just how bad this is. Maybe 2 laughs but I've already forgotten almost everything about it. Nothing intelligent or funny about it. Bone Tomahawk - 4/10 I really wanted to like this.the cast is excellent, the characters clearly defined. The dialogue is decent but suffers from being overly wordy. Like the writer read a book of olde time phrases and wanted to jam them all in. I'm sure it was a low budget despite the great cast, but it's shot very flatly and in lots of wide masters, which seems to show up the cheapness and some odd staging and blocking of actors. I never felt I was back in the old west, it slways felt like actors dressing up. The outdoor locations are also quite un cinematic. The villains aren't that great, 13th Warrior knock offs, so the last 20 minutes aren't that interesting. The final end credits song is laughably bad. Just awful. Like a Southpark parody song. But the film is worth watching for the 4 posse members. Catch Me, Daddy 7/10 a young couple are in hiding from the girl's family and are hunted down. She's a young Pakistani Yorkshire girl. He's a young white Scots lad. It's about 20 minutes too long and has several overlong or pointless scenes but is generally worth watching for it's sense of dread. Yorkshire looks well rough.
