In the UK the death toll is getting a fair bit of media attention Jackfu. To be honest, the media isn't talking about anything else, and I think the incessant focus on the subject could be disheartening and worrying for a lot of people and the news should,' lighten up' and shift onto some good news stories, if there are any. The forthcoming re-election of Trump must be good news in the US.... That will keep Fox and CNN busy, but over here we just have the Royal Family and the budget, and the budget was focused on Coronovirus.

What is happening here in the UK is that the government has accepted the scientific advice and will, basically, let the virus slowly spread and infect the population and kill thousands of people. This is best for the economy and because the population need to build up immunity and can only do that by getting the virus. This may sound flippant, but it is true. I don't blame the government. If they ignored the science and things went wrong they would get the blame. Now when things go wrong they can blame the boffins. The alternative would be to do what Russia did a month ago and close its borders. No deaths there. But that would upset a lot of people and of course you couldn't close your borders in perpetuity..... At some point they would have to reopen and the virus would them get in. Of course by the time Russia reopens its borders the worst of it could be over and a 'cure' could have been found. I would rather have gone for the Russia approach rather than the do nothing option. If a lot of people lose loved ones in this it will be the end for Boris.

According to the site Deputy Riley provided, so far this year over 95,000 people have died from seasonal flu, including 892 today.

Yet coronavirus gets all the press.

Oh, and there's only 43 years of oil left.

Coronavirus is far from over. And, it spreads much faster than the traditional flu.

In the UK on average of 17,000 people die each year of flu. If you just take the over 75s in the UK and apply the Coronovirus morbidity figures seen in Italy and the predicted spread then you are looking at 210,000 deaths in the UK. And that is being 'generous' with the math and looking at just the over 75s. In Italy it is not (as we were first told) the elderly who are dying, but younger people too. Angela Merkel said the other day that 70% of the population could get infected and today's figures show that 1 in 6 people will likely get seriously ill. Even taking a lower figure of 50% of people getting seriously ill you are looking in just the UK at five and a half million people getting really ill to the point they are having trouble breathing, getting pneumonia etc.

i dont get the whole everyone needs to panic thing i mean whats to really be afraid of if its going to happen its going to happen being afraid just puts more weight on yourself and that is what gets one closer to the grave so if in the end the one thing you are afraid of is death the best thing to do is not collapse yourself from the weight of fear truth will set you free

I understand and agree with what you are saying about not giving in to panic, but the rest of your remark reads like you are not concerned with those loved ones that are left behind to cope after your death and how much harder their lives would be.

I'm starting to get very concerned, everyday it gets so much worse.

We do have the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota if that makes you feel better. They supposedly just invented another test for COVID-19 where they can get quick results and test 200-300 samples a day (and a lot more in the coming weeks). They are bragging that will take some pressure off of the CDC.

I've been confused by the lack of clear direction from literally anyone in power. I work at the state Capitol and they've really taken no precautions. They keep busing in hundreds of school kids a day from all over the state and allow hundreds and hundreds of people come for rallies every day. We basically have a bunch of Clorox wipes staged on tables to make people feel good.

Then you have the well-known infectious disease specialist from the University of Minnesota going around all cable news channels telling us we are all going to die and offering no real solutions.

So I guess I'm confused by all of the doom and gloom that we are all going to die, but then the people in power to help prevent this aren't really doing anything. Doesn't match.

I also feel like if you're going to get infected it would be best to get infected now before the hospital beds are too full.

Very sobering information. Nice to see a factual comparison.

Dr. Fauci, a very highly respected voice by all parties and the nation's top medical advisor, said tonight that if the situation in the USA deteriorates to the same degree as seen in Italy, we could see casualty figures in the US higher than all US casualty figures for World War II.
What "casualty" means I'm not sure (infected? deaths?), but it sounds frightening to me any way it's translated.

Judged as the proportion of deaths against an equivalent number of infections, coronavirus is presently TEN TIMES more deadly than flu.

What factual comparison? How many people have been infected by seasonal flu and how many by corona virus?

This information is as sober as Mr. Orange's claim, that virus will 'miraculously' go away in April.smile

On a reflective, perhaps self-absorbed note, I should state that I had an absolutely horrible 2019...and I do mean horrible.

2020, on the other hand, is spreading the misery to every person on the planet, including me, of course.

There is only one way to handle this crisis: the Irwin Allen way.

If that's how you stop killer bees, that's how you stop Covid-19. Hell, yeah!
