Indeed, it is! My favorite Maiden album since Seventh Son...

Just discovered a great melodic black metal act, Ethereal Shroud, who released this last year...

Check on Bandcamp if that epic bm sound is your thing, it is 70 odd minutes of really good stuff.

Yes it is, one of those rare ones that don't come up again.

Thanks for the heads up! Right up my alley. I just placed an order with Northern Silence last week, coincidentally (for a couple of dungeon synth CDs), but I think I'll have to splurge and place another order for this.

Edit: And splurge I did, ordering both Trisagion and They Became the Falling Ash (both on CD).

Dungeon synth? Now you're really speaking my language; my out-of-control obsession since 2020! If the ones you ordered from NS are the two Gelure album preorders, so did I, and you're in for a treat: the second one, Candlelight Tomes, it absolutely fantastic. Spine tingling melodies on that in particular. I also grabbed the debut for Au Clair de Lune, shoegazy black metal it sounds like, sounds excellent too. I've been buying a lot of Northern Silence stuff in the last year, moreso since they've been releasing dungeon synth CDs - Spell of Unseeing's debut being a particular highlight!

Great minds, amigo! I ordered "Spell of Unseeing - Weaving Light & Shadow" (CD) and "Knights of Nvrul - Sri G'thra & Sword of Äonheart" (2-CD set). I just got into dungeon synth about a year ago and already have over 50 albums (on CD), so I guess you could say I'm kind of obsessed as well. It doesn't hurt that my wife loves it, too (so I don't get any flak for overspending). big grin

I'm not familiar with the other projects you mentioned, so I'll check 'em out. Thanks!

P.S. I refuse to get a cassette or record player, and I don't do streaming or downloads, so that helps limit my DS spending to CDs only, otherwise I'd really be in trouble.

See, this is why I check this thread when you all add to it, even though metal won't ever really be my thing the way it is yours.

I never heard of dungeon synth until you all started on about it, now listening to Candelight Tomes. This is for me, yes it is!

For me, streaming has made music like this available to me when, when I can explore music that isn't so much to my taste. I can sample here and there, and this thread has been a real help to me!

Thanks.

Awesome!

Perhaps I should clarify that I really appreciate the ability to stream for sampling purposes, but not so much as a primary means of listening to albums, which I only really do on CD.

Also, the reason I mentioned cassettes above is that it's the prominent (by far) physical medium for dungeon synth releases; they've become an integral part of the ds cult/scene/aesthetic, but one that I won't allow myself to indulge in lest I end up in the poorhouse surrounded by towers of cassette tapes.

On the subject of dungeon synth, I'm spinning some Hillsfar right now, which is over on the lighter, neo-classical/medieval side of the (ever-expanding) genre.

I operate EXACTLY the same way, my friend! I use streaming services, primarily Bandcamp (as it seems to be the preferred streaming/purchase platform for DS artists), to listen to samples, but with the exception of Gelure, and a project called Bespin Moons (a Star Wars-inspired DS album, check it out!!), I have never purchased a digital album. And for the same reason - I have no intention of gathering a digital-only library, and will not take the plunge and get a cassette or record player. My obsession is bad enough as-is with just CDs! I am all CD, all the way -- and find that I rather enjoy tracking down CD copies of some of the less recent DS releases.

Enjoy Spell of Unseeing!! It's short, like most DS albums, but it's oh so wonderful. I received Knights of Nvrul recently, and maybe I haven't properly absorbed it yet, but I didn't find the double release as captivating as I thought it would be based on the samples. Planning to give it another listen. And Hillsfar is good stuff! If you're not aware, Out of Season is pretty much the first DS record label in the US, and a huge majority of the projects they publish on CD are of the utmost quality. Recommend you peruse their website!

I've gathered a huge collection of DS CDs in the last 1.5 years or so, and have completely dove in to reading about the history, sub-sub-genres of the DS genre, and both the most prolific and "underground" artists, so if you'd like recommendations in a certain style, please let me know. Would be happy to share some knowledge! And THANK YOU for sharing your interest in this tiny subgenre to begin with!!

So happy you're enjoying Gelure, my friend! As I said to Josh, I'd be happy to provide some recommendations for you if you're interested in this tiny style of music, be it in the vein of Gelure or completely different. Hell, if I thought it would be read by more than just the three of us, I'd start a "Now Playing - Dungeon Synth Edition," haha!

Yeah, that Bespin Moon cover art immediately caught my eye, and I've been holding out hope that it'll one day be released on CD. Same story with many other cassette/digital only DS releases. I've even tried dropping hints to some of the labels ("I'd buy these in a heartbeat if released on CD!"), but who knows if they have the desire or even the ability to do so. Oh well. I'll keep hoping.

As for Out of Season, I've bought pretty much all of the DS CD releases currently available on their site. Sometimes I'll conduct a google search and come across a listing for a CD they once had but is now sold out, and I'll kick myself for not discovering DS sooner, but c'est la vie. My wife even got me a Oublieth long sleeve from OOS for my birthday earlier this month. Badass! https://www.outofseasonlabel.com/collections/clothing/products/oublieth-a-lombre-du-royaume-en-cendres-long-sleeve-shirt-black-pre-order

Thanks again for the recommendations, and if you decide to start that NP: DS thread, I'll definitely contribute! (I actually thought about doing so as well, but held back for the same reason you mentioned. big grin)

So I ordered the latest (limited edition, hand-numbered) CD release by the technical brutal death metal band Logistic Slaughter (https://logisticslaughter.bandcamp.com/album/lower-forms-of-life), and when it arrived in the mail yesterday, I discovered that they included a little bonus: a CASSETTE version of the album! Haha. How ironic. Just to taunt me, I suppose, since I announced on this board my refusal to purchase a cassette player. Looks like the tape release is already sold out, too (dig the hot pink): https://barbaricbrutality.bigcartel.com/product/logistic-slaughter-lower-forms-of-life-cassette-preorder

That is ironic indeed my friend, haha! To be fair and as you pointed out, at least it looks pretty. But yeah, doesn’t fit in with CDs. The CD cover, by the way, is pretty cool too. I don’t dig this band nor a vast majority of tech or brutal death, but the cover art for some of those bands’ albums (and in the gore/grind arena) are just sick. As in *good* sick. Enjoy!

URTHSHROUD - Eternal Forecast of Sorrow

Finally received the hand-numbered physical double CD from Dod Groda today. And since I deprive myself of listening to a full album until I have the CD, I’m listening to it for the first time now. And it is, in a word, magnificent!!

Urthshroud is described as depressive black metal, but they’re so much more. Actually even the “they” is misleading: this is a one-man band of Colin Marston, prolific and multi-genre guitarist of black metal act Krallice. Anyways, Urthshroud is at its core depressive black metal, yes; think of Xasthur’s “All Reflections Drained” or “Portal of Sorrow,” when Xasthur focused more on murk and melodrama than all-out malevolence. But what makes Urthshroud incredible is how the music is just as much space / atmospheric post-metal and funeral-paced dirge. At any given moment, there might be just space-atmosphere keyboard, a bass drum at a molasses pace, dissonant guitar, a giddily-Malefic black metal yowling scream, or all of the above. It’s so…drowning and mesmerizing, truly. “Eternal Forecast of Sorrow” is in equal parts sorrowful, draining, beautiful, and introspective. Highest recommendation! And that cover art!!

ETHEREAL SHROUD - Trisagion

Received the CD yesterday and am now listening to it in its entirety. Blissful and scathing black metal, just awesome!!

Josh: "They Became the Falling Ash" is pretty good, but it's got NOTHING on this release!

CELESTIAL SWORD - Fallen from the Astral Temple / Dawn of the Crimson Moon

2xCDr black metal release bundle from Turkish label TormentRex. I briefly considered putting this in the dungeon synth thread, as it's synth-heavy in parts (especially "Fallen..."), but decided it's more black metal with dungeon synth elements, than dungeon synth with black metal elements. Very simply put, very hollowed-out, lo-fi, dirty and noisy black metal. Plenty of keyboard intros and outros, and some songs where the synth is as high in the mix as the guitar and vocals. It's okay, but I don't see myself revisiting often. Only after some investigation did I figure out that the one man behind Celestial Sword is actually the prolific dynamo behind LOTS of other dungeon synth acts, including Serpent's Isle (one of my faves), Coniferous Myst, and Longsword!
