jackfu, I didn't think you were bragging. What phones can do now is amazing. I just want people to not text nor read FSM when driving. Using a phone 24 hours a day also seems over the top.

Amen and amen! It is tempting to almost automatically grab that phone and check it! But the story I related previously and others like it on here are reminders to resist that urge.

This article talks about depression, isolation and sleep problems. (71% of people cuddle with their phones before going to bed.) Scary article.

Not that I'm addicted to my phone much anyway, but I have a rule that the phone stays downstairs when it's time for bed.
If there was any emergency during night hours, there's always the house/landline phone that would wake us up if needed.

C E L L - is a good horror apocalyptic zombie movie based on the Stephen King novel starring Samuel L. Jackson & John Cusack - worth viewing!

Yeeks.

Some idiot in the restaurant I'm eating at plops Junior in his lap, props his phone up on something, plays a cartoon on the screen, and turns the sound up REALLY LOUD.

Shut your phone off and talk to your son you half-wit.

Phones are sitting on the table. Conversations may only last a paragraph before their phones interrupt verbal statements. Then there are several minutes of texting before the next semi-conversation begin.

I was told that in another country (not our own, Joan), people dining together will pile their phones in the middle of the table. Whoever picks their phone up when it rings has to pay the bill.

I use my cell phone for just about everything, it's a reading device, credit card, music player, it plays podcasts and audio books, I use it as a remote control for my home stereo, as a flashlight on the go, and more often than not it's the device I use to visit the Film Sccre Monthly Message Board these days, I use it to take snapshots on the go, it has replaced the newspaper in the morning... just occasionally I use it for actual phoning though. Since I don't much care for talking on a phone, I get few private phone calls and those I get are usually important, to the point, and short. I don't get business calls on my cell phone in my free time. Cell phones are the best thing since sliced bread. :-)

David, nowadays that is childcare. Give 'em a cellphone and let 'em watch vids, play games, whatever; at least the parents can eat, talk, shop, drive, in peace, amiright?
It reminds me of the old Monkees' TV episode with the mad scientist broadcasting the hypnotic eye on everyone's TV sets, thus keeping the people in his power.

I am proud to say that I was born in 1989 and that I DO NOT have a cell phone.

Ha-ha..

I agree Nicholai. They are a great invention. I too use it for many of the things you mention. I never had a morning paper and now I get the news with my first cup o' tea in bed. But you also missed another application. It's also a pocket watch. Stopped wearing wristwatches ages ago. Calls are fairly rare for me too, I usually text.

That's brilliant! I hate to see families eating out, no one talking 'cause everyone's on their damn phone. There's also a thing in the UK where shopkeepers point out they won't serve those who insist on using their phone whilst being served, rightly so.

I have my daily pub hour (well two) each afternoon, and I never stand there on the phone when I'm supposed to be socialising.

But these things aren't the fault of the phones, but the folks using them.

Paying the bill is a great idea, David

That is so true, Paul.

I’m not against cell phones; I’m against people becoming addicted to them. They can’t socially interact with people, just with their phones or other types of technology.

Our newspaper published an interesting article about 6 months ago. It seems that there is a Tech Rehabilitation Center on the west side of our state. It is a rehab center for people who are addicted to gaming, computers, cell phones, or any kind of technology. They must hand over all tech devices for several weeks. They work on a local farm, attend counseling, and learn about interacting with others. There are two problems. One is that their insurance won’t pay for this rehabilitation, and it is costly. Secondly, many of these people work in tech industries like soft-ware engineers. Consequently, they return to work with technology. Even in other jobs, people have to work with cell phones and computers. Nothing has been published about the recidivist rate.

This is a fun ad.

I just discovered my phone is also an FM radio!

Plus:
flashlight
audio recorder
camera
alarm clock and timer
transit lines arrival times

I rarely use it as a phone!

It's like that cigarette lighter in IN LIKE FLINT!!!!

With increasing frequency, I see parents in restaurants letting their kids watch cartoons and shit on tablets and cell phones with the volume turned up so high that everyone in the room can hear it. Are you freaking kidding me?!

I heard a statistic last week that shocked me... That 50% of children under the age of 4 had a mobile phone in the UK.

It's not just restaurants, it's libraries, grocery stores, just about anywhere you can go. Parents don't want to parent anymore and they just hand their kids a phone and that's that. They only turn it down if somebody complains; they're assholes that wait for somebody to say something about their piss-poor behavior.
