Just finished Westworld season two & I really enjoyed it & sort of knew what was going on. They do this trick of having two timelines running at the same time with the same characters & cutting between them, but I'm onto it.

Season 3....ive long ago given up working out who is a robot and who is human. I think theyre all robots. Including my neighbours. wink

Vanity Fair

Period piece series from a couple of years ago. Olivia Cooke is very engaging in the lead as a young lady of ill means working her way to riches in the high society of London. The direction/editing is at some times a bit odd. Each episode starts with a lousy slow version of modern song, and a Michael Palin intro, and usually exits on a modern song too, which really doesn't work at all. Other than that, it has fine acting and a fun plot.

Finished this. It was very good in the end. The opening and ending titles music were always bad and there was the worst use of zoom that i've ever seen in almost every episode. Really poor camera direction at times. Though at times very good. There are tonal difficulties and very big leaps in time that aren't well bridged.

But not being familiar with the story, i found it very entertaining. The story is quite bleak at times. They do a good attempt at showing some of the Battle of Waterloo. The acting is very good. And Olivia Cooke is a winner in the lead, she really makes a quite unlikeable and cols character very likeable at times. Watch it if you like Period pieces, you might find it rewarding.

The Oland Murder

4 Part documentary about a famous New Brunswick murder case. The son of the victim, Dennis, is the prime suspect and convicted, then there's a retrial.

A producer of the documentary is the daughter of an Oland lawyer, so leans heavily in favour of Dennis.

The documentary does show shoddy police work, and they do sound slack. But it doesn't make a compelling case to suggest he's innocent though. The defence offer no real alternative possibilities.

The only other alternative would be a complete stranger entered the building, randomly walked to the second floor, randomly walked into that particular office, beat him to death with 40 blows, 6 of which fractured his skull, then stole his phone, and walked away. Then the phone coincidentally pinged off a tower some miles away in the same area that Dennis Oland was at the time. Then the killer never commits a similar impulse crime in that area in the next 9 years.

Dennis also offers up a theory, like most Columbo villains do, saying that his dad could be an asshole and maybe he pissed someone off or had secrets they didn't know about.

Yeah.

Westworld getting more confusing. I wonder if the writers themselves are confused? Still good.

Anyone tried this Wolf Hall yet, the drama about Cromwell?

Babylon berlin still superb.

Holby City

OH NOES! They killed Xavier. frown

Cardinal S4

On the docket:

1. Beautiful Billy Campbell got old. frown

2. The composer should be charged with a music crime for flagrant abuse of the ominous drone of foreboding and despair.

3. This isn't a particularly good show.

Holby City

I don't usually watch this, but staying with my mother, I'm watching what my mother watches (lots of cookery programs!). Holby City is not bad at all, but would the heart transplant authority (or whatever they're called) really allow doctors to transplant the heart of a just died fellow doctor.

Gave up on Westworld halfway through series 2 episode 1. Yes, Babylon Berlin is maintaining its high standard, even though they've dropped Zu Aschen, Zu Staub.

We watched Wolf Hall on its first run and have the third book in the bedside reading queue when I've finished Len Deighton's Bernie Samson nonology and some book I'm reading about an old footballer. I don't much care for Hilary Mantel from what I've seen of her, but anyone who can get me interested in Tudor times must be a cracking writer.

I'm also watching series five of Better Call Saul, another series showing no signs of flagging, even though I think there's only one episode ever left to watch - out on Netflix next Tuesday.

I'm not a medical administrator, nor do I pretend to be one on message boards, but I would assume that given the (supposed) confidential nature of such transactions, plus the obvious, immediate medical need, that there are no other considerations factored into such decisions, particularly the personal feelings of any attendant staff.

As for Holby itself … ehh … it's a medical soap. It veers from genuine pathos to utter bollocks at the drop of a dime. But that's why we love soaps, isn't it? The roller-coaster of it all?

I did find Essie's reaction to being told of Xavier's death right in the middle of her revealing she's undergoing chemotherapy for recurring cancer quite affecting. Kaye Wragg really pulled out the stops for that one.

Better Call Saul - Season 5 - there is not a better drama series on television than this show. If anyone wants to see how great writing, acting and directing should look no further than this series and season 5 is no exception. My only complaint, is that I've had to wait so long between seasons. I assume it's due to the writing process. No matter, I love this show. Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman), Rhea Seehorn(Kim), Jonathan Banks(Mike) and Giancarlo Esposito(Gus) all deserve Emmy's and Golden Globes. If I had to choose my favorite between them, I don't think I could. But I guess in terms of story arcs are concerned, both Kim's and Mikes are probably my favs.

Killing Eve - Season 3 - Just started and off with a bang and an ending that I did not see coming. A fabulous darkly comic and entertaining show.

The Plot Against America - A slow burner of a show if there ever was one, but gripping nonetheless and that's simply because of the premise: a "what if" series in that Charles Lindbergh becomes President in 1940 instead of Roosevelt. He keeps us out of the European war and with the help of his cabinet members, including the renowned anti-semite Henry Ford of Ford Motor company, begins to slowly institute anti-Jewish sentiment and activities across the country. The story centers on a middle class Jewish family in New Jersey that begins to disintegrate due to their differences as to what is actually happening in the country. The book by Philip Roth was written many years ago but the writers have amped up the country's divisiveness by adding elements of what our own country has been experiencing over the past several years. Great acting but the real star here is the "you are there" aura the show has. The sets and artistic design is meticulous , as if this show was really show in the 1940's. Just absolutely gorgeous to watch. Some will feel it's too slow and takes way too long for things to get rolling. But I for one enjoy character development and it's obvious there will be a season 2(I think) as I don't see how they can resolve the novel's story line by next weeks final episode.

Been working our way through Ozark the past couple of weeks. The series has been strong throughout, with some amazing performances. For me, the third season has been the weakest, but still quite good. Some of the forced conflict between Marty and Wendy has gotten on my nerves. They each go behind the other's back, take a risk, it blows up, and then lots of drama. Wash, rinse, repeat. Overall though, I am enjoying the show, and hopefully the series gets a season 4.

Still watching Westworld. S3 ep6 now.
I have given up on even bothering to guess who is still human n who is a robot. And given they seem nearly all robots it doesnt matter if they die, coz theyre back next week - and on top of that its endless simulations n theres even a bloke who seems to be a hollowgram - so you kinda lose the concept of investing any care in the characters.

Spectrum series have been pretty bad, but I did just binge watch their latest series called PARADISE LOST. I would have quit after about two episodes, but I’m quarantined and bored. It did get a bit better, but the plot has huge gaping holes, and patience is required. It takes place in Mississippi, and it has a Southern Gothic vibe. Josh Harnett and Bridget Regan are the leads. The patriarch of the family is played by Nick Nolte who really looks very ill. I can hardly understand him anymore because his voice is so gravely, and his hands constantly shake. Each episode ends with a bit of a hook that does pull one back into viewing the next episode. The finale has a real twist at the end which means there had better be a season 2.

I finished The Plot Against America. It kind of reminded me of this quotation. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke. The production values and the actors were great. The movie posits that Lindberg beat Roosevelt in 1939, so we never went to war and remained neutral. Pearl Harbor didn’t happen. Lindberg appears to be a friend of Hitler. The story follows the rise of Fascism and therefore Anti-Semitism in America as witnessed through the eyes of a Jewish family. Overall, I liked it but didn’t really care for the finale. I guess we are suppose to embrace the finale’s ambiguity, and as some critics have stated, reflect upon how the story may parallel current times. Also, I guess I wanted more punishment for the Rabbi’s sycophancy.

I continue to watch Season 3 of Westworld. I had heard it would be easier to follow than season 2, but I find myself very confused at times. I’m hoping divergent pieces will all dovetail into a coherent whole by the end. Yep, Bill, I no longer know who is and who is not a robot.

BAPTISTE: (On the BBC.) This series stars Tcheky Karyo. He did two series called THE MISSING which were excellent. He played a retired detective names Baptiste who was great at tracking down missing people. Now the series is call Baptiste, and he again is looking for a missing girl. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been as good as The Missing series. However, it is filmed in Amsterdam, and I loved visiting that city. I’ll stick with it.

Through On Demand, I have managed to watch all 5 seasons of an older series called MOTIVE. It is all filmed in Vancouver B.C. In the first few minutes, you learn who the victim will be and who the killer is. Then the police search for a motive which leads them to the killer. I found it an entertaining series.

DEVS

Chugged through one episode so far, my friend wants to watch more. It looks nice. The score is very good.

The characters are all charmless charisma voids, except for Nick Offerman who plays a pretentious tech guru well. He's the leader of a tech company that produces unclear at this time, and there's a sinister extra arm of the company called "devs" that produce unknown for now.

The dialogue is flat and arch: "This will change everything" "No, it changes nothing." Or long-winded, pretentious monologues.

The mystery is kicked off with some stupid writing: somehow these tech-savvy gurus promote an employee, show him top secret stuff, so horrifying the employee vomits, while apparently knowing he will record it, but don't think his recording device might be backed up to a cloud somewhere. Hm. They just let him access top secret stuff and record it. Why? Because the story can happen. The writing in Annihilation was pretentious moronic nonsense, let's see how quickly this devolves. Oh, "Devs", that's what it's referencing.

BREEDERS

"Comedy" about struggling parents. Martin Freeman screams at his kids, everyone swears in exactly the same way all the time, despite their age and personality, like they were all written by the same person who thinks swearing is cool. A couple of amusing moments, but I don't care about the parents or their woes.

Kingdom S2 (2020)

More epic medieval Korean zombie action. Wipes the floor with The Walking Dead.

Episode 4 of Devs, it's actually pretty good, though the inciting incident makes absolutely no sense and the sinister company does everything to draw attention to themselves at every single turn. But the tone is consistent, the acting is decent, though has been directed to be very flat. There are some lovely images in every episode and the music is very good. The character of Kenton is clearly just Mike from Breaking Bad, though. Nick Offerman is the best thing about the show.
