Agreed. As joan says, a lot of episodes in series are packed with fillers that dont really enhance anything.

Im teally enhoying Reilly ace of spies again, from the thames tv logo to the end theme. 2 episodes in and some good 80s british actors involved, david suchet and the guy from indiana jones John Rhys Davies already.

I'm watching Len Deighton's "Game Set and Match", thanks to the wonder of YouTube. I saw it on its release in 1988, and have the vaguest memory that unless you'd read the three books you probably wouldn't have a clue what was going on. That is still the case, and happily I'm about halfway through the final book again, so it's a bit less impenetrable than it might be.

Apart from Ian Holm as Bernard Samson, I'm not sure about ANY of the supporting cast, to be honest. He's as solid and dependable as ever, if a bit stagey when he has to show anger. There are lots of shots of him taking in a situation without reacting very much, which is probably faithful to the real life of a spy, but can look like directorial indulgence.

But my mental pictures of most of the rest of the cast - Werner, Fiona, Erich, Frank, Tessa, Dicky, Bret, Zena, Lisl - were very different form the actors chosen. Okay, on reflection, George actually looks EXACTLY like a cuckolded car salesman.

A quick acknowledgement of Gottfried John, who's a great actor although the Stinnes of the book is more Lenin-ish. I thought the first time I noticed him was in Goldeneye; I was clearly mistaken. And Anthony Bate as Bret does indeed have the accent of an American trying very hard to be an English gent, a trick that must be quite difficult for an Englishman to pull off.

Richard Harvey's music is fantastic without being John Barry. Something downbeat and tense, like The Quiller Memorandum, would have been perfect for this series but I'm very fond of Harvey's slightly repetitive score. That said, it also wouldn't be out of place in an Evelyn Waugh adaptation.

Narcos Mexico S1 & S2

Finished last night. ¡Ay yai yai! Top marks for depicting the exploits of truly horrible people doing truly horrible things in the pursuit of wealth and power. Compelling performances from the expansive cast. Uncompromisingly graphic. Just nasty business all around.

Deep Space Nine.

It's alright. Easy to watch. The usual mixed messaging and confused morality depending on the story.

Like in the last episode, being a despot who intentionally strands a community, and who torture strangers, is actually okay really, because the people are happy now and they work in the fields and aren't working behind desks. The people decide to stay on the planet (though DS9 do actually bother to arrest the despot and her son).

The main characters are okay and i do like some of the actors.

Oh thanks, good old YouTube. I've just read & enjoyed the first book, Berlin Game (I bought the hardback trilogy in a charity shop), but I couldn't get on with the second one (but I'll give it another go) & meanwhile I'll have a look at the series.

The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes. Because of i think Bill Carson and Tall Guy mentioning it recently. The Carnacki episode with Donald Pleasance. He's really great. The mystery is okay. The directing is not great (English 70s TV production). Michelle Dotrice is also in it. Fun to watch. I'll try the others. I enjoy Charles Grey performances and he's in another one.

From Masterpiece, I just watched season 1 of Poldark. Looks like there are 5 seasons. I really liked it. Cornwall is just gorgeous, but they must film that series during the summer season. I only saw one or two rainy times.

I really liked the first 3 episodes of The Sinner season 3, but the last two have disappointed me. Too many holes in the story, so it has become rather incredulous. Still, I will have to finish it to see how it ends.

Xebec, I thought you were on season 1 of Sinner. Is that correct? I liked all the episodes in season 1.
Or are you on season 3 right now? Season 3 is the one I am currently watching.

Yep, I think I will really enjoy Poldark.

Oh yah season 1 episode 3.

Poldark is consistent. Demelza is the best. Poldark himself can get to be a bit pious.

Joan you should watch the 70s original with Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees as Demelza. My mum loved it.

Bill, when I finish the current Poldark, I will see if I can find the 70s version.

Hey Tominatl, did you like the finale to The Outsider? I liked the ending. Also Tom, did you stay and watch the end credits? I was pretty surprised in the end credits with a scene that could definitely mean a season 2.

I gave that new Twilight Zone redo by Jordan Peele a go.
Nightmare At 20,000 Feet.
No monster on the wing of the plane this time.
Just a strange blog/podcast that the main protagonist listens to, that describes the events as they happened/are happening.
Apart from a cute in joke to the Shatner original near the end, I hated it and won't be watching any more.
I think Jordan Peele may well be the next M Night Shyamalan. I don't mean that as a good thing.

Hey Joan! I did like the finale. Was surprised on a couple of levels by the loss of characters involved. And the final ending credit scene..that was a shocker and I've read that a season 2 is a go.

I was initially worried that they would try to draw out this particular story line but am so glad they resolved it, thus leaving the next season open for whatever possibilities. And given that last scene...yeah, I'm in for it. What a clever hook!

I enjoyed Outsider overall. I thought the characters were good. But I thought the whole sniper thing was crap - shoot one maybe, but shooting 4 people as each ran out in the open or did silly things and then "waking up" and then shooting himself? Nah.

I got to the end of s2 of Belgian thriller Public enemy too. Decent but way too drawn out. But even that didnt reach a resolve. So its gonna be season 3 now. frown
You watch all these episodes but the end of the series is no guarantee you are gonna get any kind of conclusion

Indeed, and bring back Ben's wife, played by Mare Winningham. Loved her in this and their interplay as husband and wife was as realistic as any I've seen.

Outsiders began with sufficient intrigue and then just sorta sputtered to an anticlimax. Molly makes for an interesting character but I can't say the prospect of another season that'll drag its feet like this one is something I'd be eager to see.

As a pick-me-up I re-watched the last 6 riveting episodes of season 3 of The Expanse (for the fourth time).

Looking forward to the new season of Elite, the deliciously trashy Spanish import going into its third season.
