Enjoyed "The Dam Busters".

But good lord -- the name of the dog!

And reading the trivia on IMDb for the film, the whole thing was overall for not; the damns were repaired in a few weeks and production was back to normal in a few short months. The loss of the experienced pilots and resources, probably did more harm than good. Maybe in the short terms it did some good for various missions in various ways.

The score is of course good, though still unreleased.

Good film justin but your review should go in What film did you just watch thread, this is Tv programmes. smile

Thames TV's Reilly Ace of spies, starring sam neill, dated 1983.

Written by Troy Kennedy-Martin who also did the Sweeney.

The main theme, which i always loved but didnt realise it was a classical piece. Its by Shostakovitch.

That’s because it’s not a classical piece smile

It’s from Shostakovich’s film score to The Gadfly.

Yours pedantically

TG

Im just glad some dull n boring shostakovich nerd was able to identify it. Its a lovely theme. I recorded it off tv in 1983 and liked it then. I was always thrown by the music credit.

Tom, I am hanging in there with you. I do feel at times the pacing is too slow due to fillers. However, I do think that acting is great. I really like Cynthia Erivo's character and how she plays the part. Ben Mendelson as Ralph is really growing on me. All the characters are fine actors.

It has been inspired casting, and some of the dialogue has been film-standard good. I quoted a bit from paddy considine in the movie dialogue thread.

I think the biggest reason I like this so much is that the supernatural aspect is seriously underplayed such that it gains a large amount of credibility and feels like you are listening in on someone elses natural conversation. The interplay between Ben M and Mare Winningham as husband and wife has such a natural unforced element to it, behaving and talking like an old, and very emotionally damaged, married couple.

You’re welcome smile

Ever Decreasing Circles also has a Shostakovich theme, but this time it COULD reasonably be described as “classical”, for it’s a piano prelude from one of his sets.

Watching season 3 of The Sinner. It has me hooked.

Still watching HBO's The Outsider. Too slow at times. Ep 5 dragged. Ep 6 was good and hooked me back into the series. Ep 7 dragged. Ep 8 was solid. Hope 9 and 10 are exciting.

Watching the new mid season Walking Dead.

Viewing the last season of Homeland.

Matt Bomer is doing a pretty good job delivering unhinged. Granted, this isn't top drawer material, but I'm still curious to see where it's going.

The Outsider should have been only 5 episodes at most. There simply isn't enough substance to the story, hence the glacial pacing and repeated dramatic beats.

Better Call Saul S5

Episode 1 was a strong start. I think I'm going to pace myself to one episode per week.

Yes, I agree. Bomer is very good in this series. Didn't care much for last night's episode. Just seemed a bit implausible.

Yes, where is it going is the question. I see what I initially thought about Bomer and his friend is wrong. Spinmeister, I'm predicting this which I'll black out. Ubermenschen?

Avenue 5, the latest comedy from Armando Iannucci staring Hugh Laurie. I didn't quite know what to make of it at first, it's very plush with huge sets & a very large cast, but I think I'm going to like it. It's this very large tourist spacecraft that's been blown off course, first it's just a few months delay, then it's three years or longer...& things have started going wrong with the spaceship. Although it's very broad comedy & quite light, knowing Armando Iannucci, I think things will start getting dark soon as more & more things go wrong. I think it's worth staying with. A second series has been confirmed.

I'm up to episode 7. It's an odd one. It's not hilarious but it's consistently amusing, and they are trying to tell a story too. I do like it and would welcome a second series. It is an easy watch as opposed to compulsive viewing.

Avenue 5.
The episode I watched the other night - not sure if it was 6 or 7...the one where Capt Hugh went outside to fix the shit - was terrible. Easily the worst so far. Not very funny, just stupid. And Josh Gadd is really starting to get on my nerves. He's the same in everything.

Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The latest season, 10?. It's absolutely brilliant. Awkward as hell. Totally hilarious. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Altered Carbon S2E1

I gave this 30 minutes before giving up. Drowns in the same sort of muddled narrative as its first season, weighted down by clunky, expositional writing and listless direction. Anthony Mackie is mouthwatering sans clothes, though.

Doctor Who S12E9

I gave up after 30 minutes. Would somebody take Chibnall out behind the dumpster of Broadcasting House and put him out of his misery, please. The dude can't write for the life of him. Poor Jodie just comes off as horribly hectoring and insufferably pedantic.

What's the series about? The poster / thmbnail art looked interesting.

What's the series [Altered Carbon] about?

Third rate neo-noir, Blade Runner-ishy knock-off which follows the investigation of a PI into the death of a Terran VIP that involves the exploitation/abuse of a fantastically advanced technology that allows for (interstellar) mind/body swapping and AI holograms.

Jeff Russo supplies another generic, practically wall-to-wall, music score.

I've got about 7 episodes of The Good Place left to watch.
I've enjoyed it overall, but it's gone on one series too long and I just want it to end now.
It's an easy watch, not constantly funny, but chucklesome and you can tell it's the people who do Brooklyn 9/9 (which is another show that peaked around series 3) as the rapid, quick fire silly humour is exactly the same.
Despite there being some very good looking ladies in the show, I've bizarrely fancied the quirky, least glam lady in it (Janet, the virtual - not a robot - housewifey/A I like character).

New Year's Concert/Neujahrskonzert 1987 ... Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra/Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan

Not everyone's cup-of-tea but I find most, if not all, of his recordings worthy of my time. I wish there were more video recordings of his concerts but I have many hours of his works from CD which suffice.

A 4:3 image from that time is not too good (okay for close-ups, but very grainy in long-shot); the sound, from DVD, 2.0 stereo played via DAC into hi-fi is good~very good.

Finished the Good Place.
Enjoyable overall, but way too dragged out. Probably could have been done in two series*
All the characters were likable and fun, but my two favourites were Jason Mendoza and Janet.

*I think my major problem with A LOT of TV series and drama shows these days is how dragged out they are.
Those ITV and BBC ones could be done in two or three, but usually take 4, 6 or 8 episodes. I always end up bailing on them through sheer boredom or terrible writing/plot contrivances.
