See that Body Harvest is exactly the type of death metal I can't get into. Though I am now starting to enjoy some death metal, I have little interest in vocals that are impossible to understand. I have been finding a lot of interesting bands I can get into lately the more i listen.

What about Bell Witch? Apparently a Seattle doom metal duo....

I Wait

...which I came to because they have a song that includes dialogue from the Vincent Price Masque of the Red Death way back in 1964.

This one is less intense, as the only vocals are the dialogue - and boy does it work with the video.

Beneath the Mask

And while I'm on the theme of how Masque of the Red Death has influenced metal, here's another.

Theatre of Tragedy - And when He Falleth - The Masque of the Red Death

Seems like this band's got a little bit of everything.

Couple of recent favorites that I want to share with this thread.

Fleshgod Apocalypse
This is one of my new favorite death metal bands for their fantastic mix of epic symphonic elements with opera, piano, and grand themes. Both of these albums have

New 2019 album

Prior 2016 album

Two other death metal bands bands that have grabbed me recently are Psycroptic and Gorod, whom I was able to see live recently despite one band being from France and one from Tazmania. They have a technical aspect to their music behind the vocals and interesting enough vocals that they engage me.

And another - Immolation's latest album has pulled me in as well. There is a lovely grind to the music while having interesting enough riffs that it keeps things interesting. They are playing in San Diego in October and I'm excited to watch and see how crazy the crowd gets.

Great picks, Sirusjr! I have all of those on CD. Heavy stuff. That Gorod album is pretty nutty. Welcome back to the dark side. wink

Death metal tends to be aggressive and more angry/violent.
Doom metal tends to be a bit slower in tempo and more about contemplation.

Compare - Death Metal - most of my previous post.
Doom metal - King Goat, Candlemass, Madder Mortem, Khemmis.

Cryptopsy ~ None So Vile (1996)

The drummer alone has my head spinning. Amazing musicianship all around, technically precise, groovy as hell and brutal AS ALL GET OUT (bringing that phrase back, suckers!).

Missed this post! I love Bell Witch. Mirror Reaper got me hooked, then picked up Four Phantoms. Heady, heavy stuff.

it's been a while since a metal release grabbed me, but I have completely fallen for the latest from The Faceless. 'In Becoming a Ghost' was released two years ago, when I thought I was over my tech-death phase, but apparently not.
This is a great blend of melodious clean vocals (imo michael keene, the guitarist/innovator of the band, is really shining as a singer now too) and sharp guitar work, with the yelling and high-energy riffs charging in and out as needed.

Decapitated ~ Nihility (2002)

Precise, pummeling brutality with riffs for days. Great album all around.

Josh, your current Hobbit album avatar is an adorable contrast with all the outrageous heavy metal albums you post.

I just can't imagine what Bilbo would make of it all! wink
