Ro was actually going to be what later became Kira, on Deep Space Nine, but for reasons I don't recall, that didn't happen.

Ah, i haven't seen any of that. I just read the actress didn't want to be stuck in a years long contract. Bit of a shame that.

Fyi Picard speaks with a Scottish accent.

In what alternate universe?

This is like when Canadians tell me my Lancashire accent sounds Scottish.

Its a "upper class" Scottish accent.
Deal with it

Ah, like Connery's Russian accent, you mean.

No.
Like Connery's English accent . He does not speak in his natural Scots burr as 007

Hahahahaha. His English accent is excellent.

It was never intended to be an appreciation thread. It's not in the title. And the neutral title isn't misleading. Nothing wrong with your title change idea other than it being wrong. I'm just watching the show pretty much for the first time and mentioning stuff.

You've posted three times yourself and said absolutely nothing apart from use the word "haters" incorrectly a couple of times.

But the "mentioning stuff" is all complaints, or a rare positive followed by a "but this thing sucked." How about the "Star Trek NG Pet Peeves Thread." We all have pet peeves, and from reading some of the criticism here, that's what alot of it really is.

By the way, The Wanderer, if you enjoy the series, you may wish to check out "The Orville". It's a mixed bag for me, but as they say: "your mileage may vary"

Ah, you know i didn't last two episodes of it. Didn't find it funny at all. But i had been considering giving it another go as this binge watching TNG has put me in probably a better frame of mind for watching it and maybe i'll get the dynamics a bit better.

The humor improves a few episodes in. Plus the second season -- beginning December 30 -- Seth has already said will be more serious (but not eliminate the humor).

It really isn't, mate. I'd have to go back and highlight everything but it really isn't that rare. Most of it is neutral fluff. Depends how you view stuff like:

It's a solid mix of millenials and also middle aged people with surprisingly dark hair. They definitely dye a lot on the Enterprise.

Into the fifth season and there's been barely a hint of trou (sp) and Riker liking each other.

Crewmen extras still remain resolutely silent on all occasions regardless of what is happening around them. They act more Borg than the Borg.

Troi just had a "relationship" with some leader of a planet despite them having no chemistry and little screen time. It felt very forced.

It's funny that in season one Picard is told he's broken the prime directive 9 times and in a recent episode has acknowledged he's broken it often - it's in double figures now for sure - but then next episode will still insist on following the prime directive, which can seemingly only be broken for friendship or if it's "the right thing to do".

Matt Frewer was just in a recent episode. He was fun to watch. A young (and beautiful) Ashley Judd was in two eps. She had a lot of charm. Both of these actors had more charisma than almost all of the main cast have been allowed to have in 5 seasons.

The crew have just encountered a genderless species but I'm sure Riker will still ènd up in bed with someone. - (He did, good on him)

That was pretty funny. I hadn't even noticed the palm punches or how often Worf gets battered.

I preferred the doctor before Crusher, played by Diana Muldaur.

Dr. Pulaski was a season two phenomenon. I don't know the story behind it, but Gates McFadden (Crusher) was in season one, but left for season two.

Ah, here it is:

http://star-trek.answers.wikia.com/wiki/Why_did_Gates_McFadden_really_leave_the_series_during_the_2nd_Season_of_Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation

It's my understanding McFadden was sacked and even she didn't know why. She was very bitter about it too. (I don't blame her) I guess there was enough backlash from fans they brought her back.

I understand it had to do with a conflict between her and Maurice Hurley, apparently he was a bit of a womanizer, and that did not go well.

This show was important to me, and still is, yes, I admit that Holiday Inn interiors, the silliness of some characters and about 30% of the episodes were not very good. But they did make some very good episodes and did tell some important topical stories about a lot of ideas, war, violence, torture, freedom, the potential goodness of humanity. I still think it remains a very good show. I like the 4 movies, even though probably only one of them is entirely a good one, First Contact.

I gave up on the series early on so I might have liked the later seasons if I stayed with it. Also I grew up on TOS, so that was my Star Trek. But it should come as no surprise I agree with you regarding First Contact, awesome film.

Hey Solium, yes, try the later years, many people say it got better every year. Season 3 onward

...was there a main character (alien) in it with a forehead like a Mars Bar?

https://twitter.com/startrekeire/status/715142925173334017 smile

I was an intermittent visitor to the show, but I remember one episode in particular stood out for me. I looked it up and it was from 1992, Season 5, episode 25, "The Inner Light" – Picard is incapacitated by some sort of energy beam, and he is unconscious for minutes, but we visit his unconscious mind where he lives out 40 years on an alien planet. I won't spoil it here, but the experience forever changes him. It was a brilliant idea, from a story by Morgan Gendel that had Harlan Ellison scope and emotional complexity, and it was wonderfully played, with music by Jay Chattaway that served an important role in the narrative.

Inner Light suite here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsGxmGdyRX8

The show had its moments.

I just watched that episode! There's a run of really good old age make-ups after thàt too. Though it is funny when you see Patrick Stewart aged 75 now and he looks little different from back then. Aged remarkably well.

There's a run of good eps leading and continuing into the next season.

I enjoy Barclay episodes and he just had a good one too, getting infected in a transporter beam issue.

Scotty! That was a fun episode and nice to see James Doohan. Glad it ended on a positive note and not with Scotty being sad or killed.

That episode would have been perfect if Scotty had slapped the sh!t out of Geordi after how the latter treated him.

Ah, they made up at the end. It was funny Scotty saying to Geordi, "what do you mean you tell them the exact time things actually take to get done? how can you look like a miracle worker doing that?"

In TOS, I always liked it when Scotty was left in command of the Enterprise; he would have made an outstanding captain. In addition to his leadership skills, his engineering alchemy, AND his being in charge of the ship's security forces, Scotty drank the "real stuff" when it came to booze.

Great character, and James Doohan always came across as an honorable, decent man. Thumbs waaaay up for James Doohan.

The series was advertised as a comedy like Galaxy Quest, but what we got was a weird mix of satire and drama. But it doesn't really mesh well together and the series had an identity complex. I think the comedy works when characters react to certain situations, but falls flat when it drags itself down to gutter humor for the sake of it.
