Signing off from this thread until next year and after that ending, it'll take a lot more to get me to care again. This was even worse than 2004, bar none. Honestly, I feel like chucking this whole sport for good after that.

The Boston Red Sox are the 2018 World Champions.

They earned it. The Dodgers have made it to the World Series the last two seasons and have come up empty both times. This time they looked flat. Especially that bullpen. You don't get too many cracks at the title especially in that short period of time. Can they make it all the way back to the series for a third time in a row? The window is starting to close on them.

Welcome aboard to the New York Mets new GM Brodie Van Wagenen. The 44 year old Van Wagenen was chosen by the Wilpons to take over from Sandy Alderson who left the team to deal with his ongoing battle with cancer. Sandy was brought in at a tough time in the history of the team and I wish him well as he concentrates on his family and his health.

Van Wagenen has a lot of work on his hands straight off. He's a smart guy who knows what he signed up for here. First up will be an extension of Cy Young candidate (and his former client) Jacob deGrom's contract and an ongoing evaluation of the team and the minor league system he is now entrusted with improving. Following that will be the winter meetings. Van Wagenen's reputation is as a star players agent. He will be on the other side now. He is coming in green as a GM. Like other Mets fans I don't know how he will handle this new job. We'll certainly learn a lot more about him in the next few months. For now, I will keep an open mind on this choice.

San Francisco Giants great Willie McCovey has passed away at the age of 80.

McCovey was an imposing a figure from the left side of the plate. One wonders how many more home runs he would have hit had he not played quite a few years in the wind tunnel known as Candlestick Park. He narrowly beat out the Mets Tom Seaver for the NL MVP Award in 1969. McCovey had an incredible season that year. Seaver is often quoted as saying that Willie McCovey was one of the smartest and toughest hitters he ever faced. Those hands, quick hands. He talks about Willie a lot. High praise coming from Seaver. I'm sure many other pitchers of that generation felt exactly the same way.

mlb.com has put together a great tribute to the man. Rest in Peace "Stretch".

BTw I once ran into him on an elevator at UC Medical school in SF> He was treated there>
He wasn't as imposing In person as he seemed at the plate!

RIP Stretch

Next year is the 50th anniversary of The Miracle Mets!
I was at Game five of the world Series that year when they won it all. Played in the daytime, under a glorious fall sky!

Sorry to hear of McCovey's passing. He was the first legitimate star of the San Francisco Giants, since Mays for the most part never completely shook the image of being part of the New York Giants in San Francisco.

McCovey's only World Series appearance came in 1962 and ended with his line drive to Bobby Richardson in Game 7, the only time a World Series final outcome was truly in doubt up to the very last pitch. Charles Schulz did multiple Peanuts strips in the weeks following that just ended with Charlie Brown suddenly wailing, "Why couldn't McCovey have hit it three feet higher?" and the next one "Two feet higher?"

Willie talks about this situation in the very first video on the mlb.com tribute link in my post above. When he made contact he thought for sure he had a hit. He hit it solid. But it was not to be. Bobby Richardson was right there. No player or fan could have asked for anything more in that situation. These are the moments in time that haunt players for years long after they've retired from the game. And in many cases, these are the moments in time that haunt the fans as well.

You were part of sports history. But the Mets winning it all in 1969 over the decades has become so much more than just a sporting event. I'd be interested to hear more of your thoughts on actually being there.
To understand how important that victory was, you'd have to understand where the Mets came from and the context of the time. It was the ultimate underdog story that still resonates today.

Having said that, it's interesting that over the last 50 years we've had a myriad of underdog sports films, yet this story, the ultimate underdog sports story has not yet been told in a movie. Nobody it seems wants to attempt it. Perhaps that is a good thing, because I honestly have no faith that Hollywood could ever get it right.

This documentary project slated for release next year for the 50th anniversary seems to have some potential. Looking forward to seeing the new footage they claim to have come up with. I'm sure there will be others.

I hope they dont ruin the doc. By making it fit the widescreen ratio - like that horrible ESPN/HBO/PBS sports docs. I will not watch it if they do.

I was part of history and I saved all my memoriabila!
Btw I only could afford one ticket for the NLCS and the WS . Both times i picked the clincher. Was also there the night they clinched the division title.
Oh what a night!

Looks like more about Seaver than the Mets.
It will probably feature historical footage that is cropped, stretched and converted from video to film (like Ken Burns did)

When Seaver was a rookie he sublet a basement apartment in my neighborhood.
One day me and my friends knocked on the door hoping to get autographed baseballs. His wife answered. Never did get the autograph.

Well I hope for Met fans the documentary will be as good as this one was for me!

A little bit of the archival audio in this came from reel to reel transfers I won on e-bay in the last couple years, including some TV calls of the "Boston Massacre" series.

I was also at the 'Don Young' game when NY scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Cubs. The Cubs lost their cool that day and began their slide.
The only game I ever sat in box seats - right behind the Cubs dugout!

...the 73 NLCS game when Pete Rose had a fight with Bud Harrelson causing a near riot in the stands.
And , of course, I was at the Game five clincher when Willue Mays pinch hit a single and they won the pennant!
Almost as big a miracle as '69
