I'm not sure if I already posted this, but since I'm thinking about it now...

The MARS bar, as it once was here in Fortress America, was a nougat-almond-chocolate-caramel concoction. As far as I know, it no longer exists in that incarnation. When I found the dark-wrappered MARS bar popular in England, I was sorely disappointed that its contents replicated those of the MILKY WAY bar.

I too remember MARS BARS! Sometimes they seem to disappear from the public eye but its a regional thing - I didn't see Whatchamacallits in Connecticut for ages until I moved to New Jersey and there they were.

Something else to keep an eye out for: Smarties in America are little hard candies that come in a clear cellophane wrapping and in the UK they're a chocolate.

I do remember seeing MARS bars in a Wal-Mart (ugh) in Orlando Florida some years back, maybe around 2005. They were in a cream-colored wrapper, but I foolishly neglected to buy them. They must still exist in different regions of the country.

BTW, I saw the Whatchamacallit bars yesterday at the delightful candy specialty store "To the Moon", mentioned previously in this thread.

Nowadays when I go to candy stores, my nostalgia is such that I even bypass my childhood favorites--though I'd grab the aforementioned MARS and Marathon bars in a heartbeat--in favor of the ancient stuff like root beer barrels, birch beer, ginger beer, etc. I rarely drink soda, but make exceptions when it comes to those hard-to-find classic soft drinks.

I vividly remember a fruit flavored liquid which was encased in molded likenesses of Universal Monsters. The outer "shell" was like semi soft-semi hard wax or something. You bit the head off and drank the liquid inside.

The Kit Kat seems to have survived everything, but I find it a bit sweet these days. Despite having type 2 diabetes I'm still heavily into chocolate (I just can't kick it man). Chocolate from mainland Europe mostly, which would be expensive, but I buy it from a stall in Portobello Road Market, past its sell-by date, but that's fine.

Where's a photo of the 1950s?-----which would show my beloved Zero candy bar.

Those still exist! That is, if we're talking about the white fudge-almonds-peanuts(?)-nougat-caramel version of the Zero bar. I used to eat those fairly regularly.

JIM PHELPS:

Yep, I looked them up on Wikipedia last year and saw Zeros are still being made---but I've never seen them in my grocery stores.

They're common here in South Florida. Convenience stores always have them; you may want to check those in your neck o'the woods.

JIM PHELPS:

Thanks. I found them online at Walmart and Amazon.
It ticks me off that I ordered from Walmart a few weeks ago for the first time in years and could've gotten the Zeros with free shipping.
I'm still going to try and find them locally.

big grin Ethnic foods!
TG

I couldn't find which of the 7,629 Brits threads started by DavidinBerkeley where we discussed ethnic foods, but someone (not you, TG) had never heard of the term as it was applied to supermarkets, so today I snapped a picture of the aisle in my local supermarket ("Publix").

Funny how Hispanics are no longer considered ethnic. wink

Hey, I wasn't the one who doubted you! Besides, I already used the term in this very thread. I'm "all about" "ethnic" food. wink

Hostess has a coffee cake now (yellow cake with cinnamon streusel stuff on top) but they're not as good as the ones that Drake's Cakes used to make. I haven't seen any Drake's products in a number of years and in the spirit of this thread's title....I really miss them.

Just ran across this thread today and now all I can think about is how much I want one of these:

Doc Loch, that Wonka Super Skrunch resembles the "Whatchamacallit" bar and another whose name eludes me at the moment. Looks delish, though!

I loved a chewy mint toffee called PACERS. They were white and green striped, if i recall correctly.

STRIPER was also ace. It was long, like a Wham! Bar, but had 4 different flavours on it. "Four times the flavour, four times the chew." as the ad song went.

Also, Bitza Pizza from Walkers. Crisps that were supposed to taste like pizza. I remember enjoying them when i was little.
