Really liked this final ep, and have loved the series overall.

Also the first time in a while I've kept pace with the show and not let it pile up on DVR to watch way after it's ended (though the Sunday placement has helped with that), and the first series for ages there hasn't been one episode I really didn't get on with.

The Christmas special was OK I suppose. Essentially a Dalek reboot to reintroduce them for new viewers. Could have done without the soapy stuff in the cafe. 6/10.

I was amused at how many people on Twitter were upset about the UNIT development, thinking it's permanent. It will undoubtedly return in a future episode, even if it's only a throwaway line... perhaps funding restored when Brexit is cancelled smile

So now we have a 12 month break.

Episode 10... meh. Very average.

So, episode 1, 2, 5 and 10 I can do without. Episodes 3 and 6-9 much better. A series of two halves, I think.

Confirmation that series 12 will not air until 2020. Another gap year... quelle surprise. That's our fourth such year since 2009.

Shame I didn't make it past episode 2 then. smile

  • The scarf is from fashion brand Paul Smith - it was already on the market. It's not been specially designed for Jodie.

That scarf is gonna confuse the hell out of Spider-Man Noir.

Yes, I really liked the New Year Special.

Speaking of the daleks -- when watching the old show, I have vague memories of the episodes that introduced the species. Correct me if I'm wrong, Whovians, but weren't the daleks once humans? I seem to remember the Doctor and his crew encountering some people in the forest at Skaro, who were chased from their city because of a mutation that had struck their species, resulting in the daleks?

If this is the case, I'm surprised it hasn't been explored further. Although I like this aspect of having them roam about without their suits, like in the New Year Special. The dalek's attachment on the back reminds of another episode that had a bug/spider-like creature on the host's back, controlling their bodies. Or am I thinking of something else outside Who?

No, I think you're right. Though I wouldn't be surprised if other series had explored that idea too (feels plausibly within ST:TNG's style too, for example).

Probably Babylon 5, when Emperor Londo had one of those things on his back and shoulder.

On Skaro, there were two humanoid races, the Kaleds and the Thals, who went to war with each other. Kaled scientist Davros genetically engineered the Dalek race, and tricked the Thals into destroying the Kaled city completely, making them think it would bring an end to the war. He then set the Daleks on the Thals.

Many, many years later, the First Doctor encountered the Thals in the forest and helped them defeat the Daleks and take over their city.

Not a committed Who fan but I’m pretty sure it happened to Sarah Jane Smith in her time as a companion.

She had a giant spider on her back in Planet Of The Spiders. I just figured Thor meant something like the squid type thing in the New Year special.

Cheers! Thanks for the info, litefoot.

I think the spider-on-the-back thing might have been from a completely different film or tv show. I remember it as quite scary. It's fairly recent; not any Sarah Jane incident. Not BABYLON 5 either. Hmmm.

It is of course true that Sarah Jane Smith did indeed have a spider on her back in Planet of the Spiders, but perhaps Thor is thinking of a more recent Tennant episode 'Turn Left' where Donna played by Catherine Tate also had a 'Time Beetle' on her back ( a prop which was itself inspired by the spider).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_Left_(Doctor_Who)

Well the NYD episode is certainly the best of the last bunch, mainly due to some nice direction and sfx, which through all the firepower on display gave us some much needed threat and excitement. Much of it though was let down by ill thought out ideas.

So, this Dalek could only make itself a rough-looking casing suggesting it only had less perfect materials to hand, and yet it gave itself flight and anti-tank missile launchers superior to what we've ever seen before all magicked up in a barn! And then there's the business of the modern army not being able to dent the thing but it was quite well disposed of in the 9th century by a few savages with swords???

Like most of new showrunner Chris Chibnall's ideas it's a rip-off. A mashup between the 2005 episode Dalek featuring a lone Dalek which regenerates itself by contact with Rose, and downloads the world's knowledge via a pc; and the 2006 novella I Am A Dalek where a Dalek buried beneath the Earth in ancient times is excavated and runs amok by using a girl it takes over:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Dalek

Cheers - 'Turn Left' was probably the one I was thinking of, at least. Can't speak for Thor of course :-)

Yeah. I remember thinking that the beetle was exceptionally PLASTIC at the time, but they did enhance it with a bit of cgi for the bits where it's mandible occasionally crept over the shoulder. I also liked those moments when people kept saying to her "there's something on your BACK!". Great episode, Turn Left. My admiration for Catherine Tate leapt by leaps and bounds in that season. Definitely one of the best New Series companions.

Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole were photographed flying from Heathrow to Cape Town on Saturday. Rosa and The Ghost Monument were filmed there, so it looks like they're going back for more. Desert filming perhaps?

So it looks like Season 12 filming is up and running.

Doctor Who nominated at the National Television Awards tonight. Voting will close later today.

Will Jodie fly back from South Africa to see if she wins Best Actress? Unlikely given she flew out on Saturday.

Well so much the great British public being so overjoyed at the new female Doctor. Look, if she was anywhere near as entertaining as Michelle Gomez, the female 'Master', I might have warmed to her by now whatever my reservations about a female Doctor are, but the facts for me are she's the worst Doctor since Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker, and wears the worst outfit since Colin's. I know the last thing is nowt to do with performance but I'm also talking about the fuller picture here.

All the other new series Doctors (Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi) have more acting chops in the part beyond the nutty professor thing they all have to have now, and she hasn't. But it says plenty about Who audience reaction. We all know that previous winners have been mass voted for (fans en masse + general public popularity equalled success back then), and she just hasn't got it. But the Beeb keep pushing her and insisting she's marvellous and the most popular thing since sliced bread but it just ain't true. I did feel for Capaldi who was a zillion times better than his replacement, but he wasn't popular with the wider audience either, and that seems to be the case with JW. So much for those 'amazing' ratings at the start.

I know it's not just her fault. There's the other problem too of course, the other wonderkind, showrunner Chris Chibnall, and between them they've ruined what was left of new Who. Never thought I'd see the day when I wanted to see my favourite show crash and burn. Not even the McCoys had that effect.

Perfectly happy for Bradley Walsh though. I believe he got a gong for his quiz show The Chase. If only he could wake up in the Tardis shower next series (in 2020 - another measure of success - NOT) and realise that he was The Doctor all along..

It's pretty amazing that we have such an opposite reaction to this, Paul. I think Chibnall's writing this season is much better than most anything in the Moffat era (but obviously not on Davies level). I also think Jodie Whitaker is much better than, say, Matt Smith, who I never cared for. I'm fairly optimistic of the direction it's heading in, although we now have to wait more than a year for the next episode.

Well gents, it wouldn't be a Doctor Who thread if everyone agreed. Doctor Who fans NEVER agree. Whether it's favourite era, Doctor, story, companion. That's just part and parcel of Who fandom.

As regards waiting a year, I will still be chipping in here with updates now that filming is under way in South Africa (and suitable spoiler warnings of course)

Jodie didn't win Best Actor at the NTAs, by the way.
