I was unaware of Mr. Wrightson's medical issues. He had some severe health problems.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/comic-riffs/wp/2017/03/20/bernie-wrightson-co-creator-of-swamp-thing-elevated-the-art-of-horror-in-comics/?utm_term=.75255eecc9f5

Too bad Gordon Reeves no longer checks this thread, as he would no doubt create a fine tribute to the late Mr. Wrightson, whose peak is right in Gordo's "wheelhouse."

There's a fine tribute to Julius Schwartz in that Bronze Age Bible o'Mine, BACK ISSUE #62, "Superman in the Bronze Age":

Ah, where was I? Okay.

Been reading many Superman and Action Comics from my tragic youth years, and one thing that is apparent is how "basic" and old fashioned many Superman stories from 1978-84 are. From the Cary Bates writing to the Curt Swan artwork, Superman/Action Comics find The Man of Steel in stories that could very well have been published in the 1950s and 1960s. These tales are more youth-oriented than the same stories being told in JLA or DC Comics Presents, the Superman team-up book.

Occasionally there is a story a cut above the usual Bates-Swan offering, but mostly they feel free of in-depth continuity or "dark" or "edgy" stories, even for that time period. They are largely well told and highly entertaining, though. They remind me of everything I loved about Superman as a kid, though Batman was always my hero of choice. It was fun to read these comics again. I'll spare you all the sight of eight-year-old me in my Ben Cooper Superman costume, circa 1979.

Who was the artist on that above picture? It's really decent.

Looks like John Buscema's art.

I didn't really start reading Superman books until the John Byrne reboot after Crisis, so my knowledge of his stories before that is pretty minimal. The only stories I can think of that I have read are the Alan Moore stories, including Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow two part farewell letter to pre-Crisis Superman, and For the Man Who Has Everything, both of which are excellent. Of course that will change when I receive the Phantom Zone book I ordered!

Unless one grew up at some time during the pre-Crisis Superman era or just enjoys the "wholesome" vibe that is classic Superman, I would say to proceed with caution with that era of the books. Me, I love 'em, and if you read them with an open mind and accept these stories for what they are instead of what they "should" be or because they are not what you normally like to read, you (meaning "the reader") may be underwhelmed.

Having said that, the Gerber-Colan Phantom Zone is definitely NOT the type of aforementioned Superman story.

I finished the miniseries last night and have already cranked out some long-winded prose about said miniseries, but I'll wait until Michael Scorefan has read it before posting about it.

It's John Buscema. From the 2nd Marvel/DC, Superman/Spider-Man team-up.

So happy to know that. smile Anytime I can get across the love I have for this stuff and "move" someone to also give it a look always makes my day.

That BACK ISSUE includes a fine article on the WORLD OF KRYPTON miniseries, which was apparently the first-ever comic book miniseries, though it is largely forgotten today, though not by me. wink

Enjoy.

Michael_Scorefan: Have you had the chance to read the Phantom Zone yet?

I haven't even received it yet. When I ordered it, I bundled it with a book coming out in June. Although I have received some other items form the order, Phantom Zone hasn't shipped yet, so I may not receive it until mid-June. I know you wanted to post comments about it, so why don't you, and I will chime in once I get the book.

I appreciate the FYI. I still need to pick up the reissued/expanded Batman: Legacy TPB published this past April.

Speaking of DC Comics, I'm happy that they've kcked things into high(er) gear and have started an active republishing campaign. The aforementioned GERRY CONWAY: TALES OF THE BATMAN (due this July) and LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT: JIM APARO VOL 3 (due Aug 29) collects some prime Phelps-childhood era comics.

Yes, there is getting to be almost too much coming out, and I've taken a break from ordering because I've been slow to crack open what I've got. (In the Tales of the Batman category, f'rinstance, I've only got the Gene Colan volume. Um, obviously.)

I have a ton of reading to do, comics and not, so my ordering has had to come to a grinding halt.

As for Wonder Woman, I am on a self-imposed media blackout--didn't even watch the 3rd trailer-- until after I've seen the film, which I anxiously await! smile
