Suspiria Piss poor. As of now this is the worst one I've seen. Not really much to sat ' giallo'. That is except for overloud/ inappropriate music. It was headache inducing. I almost turned it off but curiosity held sway. A couple of deaths were cut, which doesn't help. It was a visual delight for the eyes. Yet, at the same time, it was jampa ked with emptiness. Nothing happened until the last five minutes and even then it was over too easily. Did I mention the music was terrible. Bingo point = can't be arsed. One I won't be watching again. Time for a paracetamol. Argento or the recent remake?

It was the original by the way.

Amazed that we haven’t done Suspiria yet. And I suspect only the original will count. In case you missed it, I’ve added a list of all films reviewed to the very first post in this thread. Just checked, even though the film wasn't that good, what few deaths there were, they were cut to shreds , on the version I watched.

Suspiria (Dario Argento, 1977) A mere TWO giallo bingo points… someone is killed with a razor by someone wearing black gloves. How can this be? Well, because of course it isn’t really a giallo at all, despite it being mentioned in the same breath as Deep Red, Tenebrae etc, being helmed by Argento and being incredibly stylish and stylised, it doesn’t belong in that fold. I must confess to forgetting how much of a giallo it isn’t, so I’m as guilty as anyone. Anything seemingly supernatural in a giallo (with a few exceptions) tends to be explicable. It’s somebody dressing up to scare, or to throw the police off the trail. In Suspiria it actually IS supernatural. I think the remake may have more giallic features, but even that may not qualify. I’m going to include this film in the list anyway because I watched it in that spirit.

In the version I watched I think I saw one pair of very dark grey gloves and it was briefly. I think I lost heart in the giallo tally.

I checked out some of the murders , on you tube, that I believed were cut. They were cut , absolutely butchered. Had I known I would have looked for a uncut version. Not that it would have made the film much better.

I stumbled on a 2nd hand copy of Suspiria a few weeks ago and haven’t watched it yet. Not my favourite giallo, nor my favourite Argento, not even sure it’s my favourite Suspiria but I sense a viewing coming on. I’ve managed to watch both the Argento Suspiria and the re-imagining from 2018 all in one day, thanks to an early start, careful use of a lunch “hour” and another spell after work. The first is a tight, sparsely plotted horror film in garish Disneyish colours, no nudity, quite a lot of gore and bags and bags of style. The remake is an hour tooooo long at 152 minutes with a couple of great performances by Tilda Swinton (as two of the leading characters) with subplots all over the place. “All over the place” isn’t a bad description of it. It isn’t especially clear what’s going on at any point. There’s a lot more dance in the second film. I’m not a fan of dance, tbh, so the savagery of the piece, intended as a condemnation of war, just looked like a jagged mess to me, as if a troupe of kids got a place on a talent show and didn’t know what else to do. Some nudity, quite a lot of gore and - again - not a giallo. Even less of one, in fact, than Dario’s original. Quick, somebody, find a proper one to review!

Murder Obsession(1981) directed by Ricardo Freda Michael is a successful actor. As a kid he murdered his dad, or did he? He returns home to see his mum, who seems to fancy him a little toooo much. His film friends arrive later. People die. Shades of gothic horror added ( big old house , rain , thunder). Better than Suspiria within its first 10 minutes. Funky music= no= Twist ending= I think so, you think it's the butler and it is but not all of them Witness of murder= yes the main actor as a kid Striptease= no Killer’s POV= don't think so Man slaps woman= if there was it was quick and quiet Overloud or inappropriate music= yes fkn awful in places Outrageous title= no J&B bottle = yes within the first few minutes Naked woman= yep several Death by stabbing = yes gutted like a fish Red herring= I'm saying yes. Right after the film comes on a black gloved killer climbs through a window and proceeds.to stangle Laura Gemser- turns out they are making a film. We fell for it. Black gloved killer= yup, as mentioned Goofy police inspector. Not one coppa , must have been at the ball Important picture = yes several at the beginning that trigger a flashback Woman takes bath or shower= yes Blackmail= said to be but may have been a lie Gay/lesbian character = not sure, gint then move on Important memory= yup, the flashback Random scene in Italian= yes several Ooh ooh music= no more like argh, argh music and that was me. Death by razor= no Childhood trauma = yep as said above Killer’s footsteps= no bit there were foot prints ala Michael Bentine's Poty Time So a decent 14. There were several within the first 10 minutes

Thanks to Tall Guy for the point rankings, no small task at 70+ entries (you may notice that Deep Red pops up twice) 73 I think? I’m slacking at only about 10 “contributions” In my defense I don’t have any streaming services or stores that sell the physical media (much less giallo videos; most of them are Region B anyway) Damian’s reference to “argh argh music” made me laugh out loud.

If its any consolation I don't do streaming or anything like that. My views are either from you tube or, in most cases, my own collection- but I'm getting near the end of that. So some'll be repeat viewings. I might have to look for some fresh ones.

That’s pretty good considering you’ve been doing the heavy lifting round here in terms of original entries. I hate watching movies on you tube coz I end up having to watch them on a fkn iphone. Also the videos of worthy-looking gialli on the (ebay) secondary market are mostly at darkly sinister out-of-print prices for US-friendly versions. Rationalizations aside, onward and forward.

I'm a bit lucky with you tube - it is available on/ through my blu ray player. I couldn't watch films on my phone.

The last film I watched (quite a while ago) on my iphone was actually a giallo, Bava’s 5 dolls for an August Moon. I couldn’t even appreciate Edwige shaking her stuff to a J&B-fueled Umiliani shake. Aesthetically unacceptable.

Time for a paracetamol. Coincidentally, I watched this too about a week ago. I hadn't seen it since 1977, but I enjoyed it much more this time around. What I had disliked so much 46 years ago (!) - the terrible performances and dialogues, the really aggravating score, the WTF's going on?, all fell nicely into place this time round as an "exercise in style over substance". Well maybe not the terrible performances... and yet I'm prepared to believe that this was one of Argento's cunning little tricks, leading us into his dreamworld. The visuals really are outstanding. The film reminded me a lot of Polanski - the "child's POV" really high door handles, the terror that awaits beyond those doors, the light coming in from ABOVE the doors (it's usually from underneath)... the labyrinthine interior geography. The witchcraft angle, all shadowy whispers, is very much like ROSEMARY'S BABY. Outstanding film in many ways, and truly cinematic. By the way, I also saw the heavily cut version. The first double-murder (you would have had no idea that there were two) is beyond incomprehensible. I did then go and seek out (ie find for free online) the uncut version, and while that does clarify matters, I found it really distateful. I may sound like an old fanny complaining about violence in this kind of film, but I honestly don't think it benefitted from that kind of explicitness. It was a fantasy film after all. Just enough explicitness to know that there were actually two deaths would have sufficed. That uncut version I saw also had a different score - homemade I think, and while it managed to avoid driving me crazy like the original "The Goblins" (sick) score did, it lacked the iconic icing on the OTT cake which the original undoubtedly had, like it or not.
