Are you talking about the "throw him to his death in the icy abyss 'cuz he was askin' for it" version, or the "snap his neck to stop him from incinerating countless innocent people" version? Because either way, I was fine with it.
Oh, it was the "snap his neck" version.
I revisited "Man Of Steel" last weekend. To my mild surprise, I didn't dislike it as much as before. The score is still turgid and noisy, though.
Are you talking about the "throw him to his death in the icy abyss 'cuz he was askin' for it” version?
But did he die in that version? I have a memory of seeing all 3 baddies being taken into police custody (in the North Pole) in a kind of cut away scene a bit later in the movie.

I didn't even know about this until I looked it up!
A deleted scene for Superman 2 shows a group of Arctic Patrol officers arresting the living but powerless Kryptonians after Superman defeats them. The scene also includes Lex Luthor’s arrest, tying into Superman III, where he’s imprisoned once more. This deleted scene was included in non-American television broadcasts of the film, and they confirm Zod’s survival

Uh huh. Right. I haven't seen any "foreign" television versions, but the version I saw on television in the 1980s, which had a whole bunch of extra footage (including Non killing the little boy in the southern town) had no such footage of Zod and his two cohorts being arrested. However, it does show Lex Luthor being arrested.
It's interesting that the article doesn't *include* the footage. As they say, "seeing is believing".
But even if the footage did exist, the fact that it's not included in either the theatrical or the Donner cut makes the whole theory suspicious and non-cannon in my book...

Them’s nerd fighting’ words....
Not fighting words, just not in any official cut of the film.
I retrieved my VHS copy of the 1980s broadcast last night and watched it. Indeed, there are three *pixel*-sized characters in the bg. being loaded into a red snow vehicle. I'll take your word for it that they're Zod, Ursa and Non. (Who else would they be?)
But this just brings up my overall problem with this film and what a clusterfuck it is to begin with. Why would competent filmmakers depict the fate of the main villain in the distant background? No mention that it's Zod, Ursa and Non? None?? This film is loaded with problems like this, even in the release cut.
Watching the other extra footage, all I can say is... "Wow":
Superman waving at a passenger jet as he flies to Paris? Couldn't they have used that money to shoot *close-ups* of the three main baddies being arrested and shoved around by weak Earthlings at the end? That would have been much more emotionally satisfying.
Superman cooks a soufle' for Lois in the Fortress of Solitude. I was literally embarrassed watching this scene.
Superman destroys the molecule chamber. This is a necessary scene, but in the television version, they never bothered to put the lasers coming out of Supey's eyes, so he just opens up his eyes real big and looks psychotic, like Charles Manson or something... Kinda funny.
