Tarantino is a real character himself, but I think he might be on to something here.
Usually the villain or the lady are the most interesting parts of any Batman movie.

Batman IS a very interesting character, but he is highly misrepresented in the movies. He's a detective first, then an action hero when necessary. The movies have always skipped over the former, removing an essential element to the character of Batman.

Nailed it in one. We haven't seen the real Batman on the screen yet. "Batman Begins" is the closest, but then the next two films strayed away from him yet again.

Someday I will get the chance to tell my Batman story and all this will change. big grin

Absolutely; I have the feeling the comics most often stray from this basic principle as well-- there may be a little mystery, but not a truly puzzling one.

Mask Of The Phantasm is a character study of Batman and his motivations.

Well luckily the overwhelming majority of the masses who flock to watch super-hero movies are a different crowd than those who actually read the comic books so the former will never know the difference.

It's the closest to be sure, but I was referring to the live action films.

huge Tarantino fan but I have to disagree with him there. I do agree with you lot that the lack of his detective skills in the live action films has being disappointing. he's suppose to be the world's greatest detective after all

would be nice to see some variation of him as Matches Malone in a live action movie. going into some shady bar to investigate a tip or something. might be too late now though because of the Downey version of Sherlock Holmes

Now that we have had good "realistic" Batman movies, I'd love to have a more comic booky approach; not too comic booky, but more like Burton's Batman movies, ie, set in comic book universe, with its own style and completely made up settings; and of course, I'd love to have a true mystery in it.

Tarantino is a talentless hack. I long ago gave up on his films as a modern day version of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.

I couldn't agree more. Reading that Tarantino thinks Batman is not very interesting makes me want to watch a Batman film...

Whilst I wouldn't quite go that far, I do think he. is hugely over-rated both as a writer and as a director.

I agree with this. He does have a knack for some good dialogue, but then it starts to sound the same movie after movie. So it's more of a one trick pony sort of thing.

While I can't defend Batman, which I got tired of back in 1967, and feel it's just about been milked to death in the modern era, I'll tell you what I think is really not very interesting and that's repeated viewings of Tarantino movies. After just a couple viewings of any Tarantino picture, the shallowness starts to reveal itself. Siskel and Ebert pegged this guy as one note way back when. Nothing's changed. He's how old now and he still makes the same movie he did twenty years ago?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

For me, QT hasn't done anything interesting since Jackie Brown. His best work.

Not that the Nolan-Batman films, or any Bats films so far have been brilliant...

Like someone said above... Batman is billed as the world's greatest detective...so lets see that onscreen. Id watch a good adaptation of Hush or The Long Halloween.

I'm no expert, but isn't the original 'Batman' a sort of tortured genius who was traumatised by his parents' assassination in front of him, and whose intent was to incarnate the darkest fears of the criminal? Isn't it an ego/shadow thing that US comic books play on to illuminate the adolescent's identity crises, like Spidey and Peter Parker?

As such, there's plenty of scope for genuine development in the model. Not that it's ever been exploited properly. To take it back to period might be an idea?

Didn't the original comic-book franchise strip back all the silliness ('Robin', the bat-cave etc.), somewhere in the late '60s and return him to his Gothic roots? At one point, didn't Robin go to college, and Batman travel the world? And even more so later?

I haven't seen more than two of these movies, but it would seem, as ever, that the 'frnachise exploiters' have already added more and more anal-retent trappings and maguffin nonsense once more, and he needs streamlined back to health again.

I've no vested interest, 'just sayin'.
