If you're one of my Facebook "friends" (we know they're all just blow-up dolls anyway) you will probably already know this. We had our beloved cat Oscar put down last Friday. We were all (my wife, my son and I) pretty cut up by it all. It's strange the little details that send us unexpectedly into floods of tears - on Friday night we were seemingly fine, out with the extended family having a few wines, then I got home, opened the fridge, and saw the packet of his favourite sausages, opened. He had eaten two that very morning. There were three left. And the rest of his tin of "Recovery" food for very old cats. Chucking it into the bin was one of those very tough moments. Just little details. But this all sounds like attention-grabbing. Maybe it is, who cares, but we're not wallowing in self-pity. Instead I'd like to rejoice in the 23 years of joy and happiness he gave us. He was abandoned shortly after his birth. My son found him during the school summer camp in July 1999, helpless and abandoned. He and the other kids at the camp looked after him until my wife and I drove the 200km down the coast to get him, take him home, and care for him. We had to give him warm milk from a tiny little bottle. He slept in a cardboard box beside our bed, on top of a plastic bottle filled with warm water and covered in a small blanket until he was old enough to fend for himself. Even the vet was upset on Friday. She was checking her records and realised that he was the only cat left in her books which had been born last century. But he had a great innings, a long and happy life, and we are grateful to have had all that wonderful time with him. R.I.P. Oscar: July 1999 - November 18th, 2022

Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. My condolences. 23 years old, wow, I am sure Oscar had a great life with you.

The thing about pets is they are not people, you get what you see. Love , affection, fun , memories , whatever. I don't think you get a pet that's a devious a hole, etc.

When I visited their home not long after, I saw the cat's collar on the counter. My brain immediately said "It's empty now." I didn't even know the cat well, and I was still saddened at the thought.
