Right around now, Amazon is having lower prices on various forms of media for the holidays. I only own One Frank Sinatra CD, 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning'. I'd like to get 'It Was a Very Good Year', which is one of my favorite songs of all time. There are many different boxed sets, and collections available on Amazon. One is titled 'Essential Sinatra' which comprises 3-CD's, but has no track listings or view of the back and no reviews. It 'looks like some sort of 'boot'. There is another collection, 'Sinatra, Best of the Best' (one disc) which does have the song. Can any Sinatra fans suggest something, there are many other collections. Thanks

There's a 3CD box set entitled "The Capitol Years" that provides an excellent overview.

Rereading that thread was a fun walk down memory lane--I laughed out loud at some parts.

(To this day I still don't grok what I said to set off the aforementioned emboldened gent.)

MD, it sounds like that Best Of The Best CD would be a good place to start.
The nice thing about that disc is that it has tracks from both Capitol and Reprise.
From there, you will be able to discern just how much more into Sinatra you want to dive.

MD, since that 2016 thread I started, I have added considerably to my Sinatra sets. When I get a chance tonight or the next day or two I will go through them and offer some suggestions. There is some duplication but some great box sets too.

btw, I did end up spending for some pricey sets after all. It was worth it.

Just a point, as I don't see this explicitly mentioned here -- "It Was a Very Good Year" was from Sinatra's Reprise period and will not appear on an anthology of recordings from his Capitol years. I share your love for IWAVGY but also really enjoy his Capitol recordings. I think his voice was maybe on the decline during the Reprise years, though the Reprise album September of My Years (which includes Very Good Year) is some terrific nostalgia...

Thanks for your efforts, Edwzoomom. I'll bet you had a good listen to some of the titles while doing your research? - Dave

Thanks, Dana Wilcox. Yes, you are correct and I found out just what you described above. What I have done is order 'Sinatra - Best of the Best' which is ONE CD, but has 'It Was a Very Good Year' among the titles. It's only one disc, for times I don't want to listen to more than one disc. And I also ordered the 3-disc 'The Capitol Years' which has a ton of wonderful songs, (a lot I've never heard before), on 3 discs. I'm so 'out of it', I did NOT realize that Sinatra had his 'REPRISE' songs as well as his 'CAPITOL' songs and that these were two separate companies, which of course they were, but I never knew! But I should get these two separate labels early next week in time for Turkey Day. THANK YOU to everyone who made suggestions, I appreciated it greatly!

... I did NOT realize that Sinatra had his 'REPRISE' songs as well as his 'CAPITOL' songs ...

Don't overlook the fact that Sinatra had a recording career prior to CAPITOL, too! For approx. a decade he recorded for COLUMBIA and produced a wonderful library of work, many songs having their first interpretation before he revisited them in either or both the later recording contracts.

Such works may not have the SQ fidelity of the later works but recent releases of classic albums such as The Voice (1945) and Swing and Dance (1950) should not be overlooked. For those who know Sinatra from his popular 1960s' recordings (My Way, Strangers in the Night, etc.) these earlier works will be a revelation.

And, of course, prior to these we have his work with Tommy Dorsey (and Harry James) and there's many a fine lyric to be found in these Big Band tunes. smile

Thanks for the tip MusicMad. I did not know any of this about the much older recordings. However, all the music I'll be getting next week should tie me up for some time. But I wont' forget what you pointed out, and will likely investigate those recordings perhaps in The Spring. Thanks!

Taking you seriously this time....

It depends on what you want, Monte. "It Was a Very Good Year" is from his 60's, Reprise years. Do you want more of that? or more of a survey of all his eras?

You might see what cd's are in your local library (or interlibrary loan) from this period, or other periods, and preview either the same cd's (because he's a popular artist, you'll probably find many things from the library still available for sale).

Of if you decide you want more of his ____ era, you could ask here what we recommend from that era.
