This should be one of not so many positive movies coming out this year. Feels bad to say this, but recently Hollywood is just full of reboots and action/comic heroes. When is enough? We want more ambitious films that actually tell an interesting story which is complex and with intrigues. Let's hope Dune will be good!

I went in expecting Blade Runner 2049 to be merely “ok”, and at worse tarnishing the legacy of the original. But I loved it! Just like the original it rewards repeated viewings. I didn’t think it bettered the original, but I think it’s an amazing film in its own right, and has already garnered quite the cult audience/appreciation.
Afraid I was left rather unimpressed with the trailer for Dune. It looks.... drab? Nice design work on show, but where’s the sense of awe and wonder? Yes there was some scale and grandeur shown, but zero sense of fun and excitement about this epic too. It feels flat. I adore the book and it’s full of myriad different layers, emotions, intrigue, ecology, great characters, and fun too. Excitement about this world. I’m not sensing from this trailer alone that this is going to encourage people to rush out to leave the safety of their homes in these Covid times, especially if Blade Runner 2049 didn’t do well pre-covid and that had Harrison Ford returning to Deckard as an extra incentive too.
Hoping it’s a case of the first trailer not really being all that representative of the film itself. Fingers remain crossed. Love the cast and the possibilities, and I did love that impressive shot of the worm at the end though. Impressive scale.

Just came back from the film (in IMAX).
It's easily my favourite film of the year (so far). Denis Villeneuve is truly the new Ridley Scott in terms of both narrative depth and visual style. People weaned on Marvel and tapid blockbusters will no doubt find it dour and depressive, and call for the "fun" of it all, but I'm oh so thankful it doesn't have anything of that, and takes itself very seriously. Love the lower tempo, the dream segements, the vistas, the stagings. 2 1/2 hours flew by extremely quickly, and can't wait for part 2 (providing there will be a part 2).
Zimmer's score has some great parts. Absolutely love the GLADIATOR stylings for the fremen/the desert, all the music surrounding the prophecy and the use of vocals. That's the visionary Zimmer I had hoped for and expected. However, there are other parts -- mostly the action stuff with electric guitars and whatnot -- that becomes too much of a "loudness war". When the soundtrack comes out, I'm expecting to weed most of this stuff out (I have no doubt the soundtrack will be insanely long, as has been Zimmer's practice in recent years). There's a rhythmical, Tangerine Dream-like sequencer track that is very cool too; gets to shine in the middle part of the end credits. I see that Klaus Schulze has co-written a track with Zimmer, I wonder if that's it -- it's got the Berlin school nailed down, anyway.
