Anyone also excited for this movie? Something tells me it can be as good as Blade Runner 2049, although I'm afraid it's not possible to make it better. BR2049 is a masterpiece for me with fantastic atmosphere and cinematography. Hans Zimmer might also do a good job here. I only hope it comes out this year

Excited is an understatement!

To be precise, I have no particular connection to the source material, but I'm VERY excited about the prospect of a new, visionary sci fi film by Deneuve, and with a Zimmer score to boot! This is the film highlight of the year for me.

This should be one of not so many positive movies coming out this year. Feels bad to say this, but recently Hollywood is just full of reboots and action/comic heroes. When is enough? We want more ambitious films that actually tell an interesting story which is complex and with intrigues. Let's hope Dune will be good!

I don't want to create any kind of fuss, but the core of BR2049 is one of fairly pure simplicity set in a scenario with complex peripheral issues. Yes, it ends up being good. Why, because K is imbued with a level of wisdom and selfnessness that enables him to push himself through the eye of the needle.

If we get that sort of story quality in Dune, of which I have no doubt Villeneuve can deliver, expectations could conceivably fall short of what is delivered.

My main concern is that it will have no score and the synthetic imagery will be reduced to a two-tone color. I want to see a real film with vibrance! Paul Atreides is really A Man Called Horse and then some. How you make people believe a character who was born into royalty, but then has to properly earn that responsibility from the ground up all over is really a lot of what Dune is about. The audience has to be awed by the rite of passage that character goes through.

BR2049 bored me to tears. Gave up after 30 or 40 minutes. Found it trite and like most films today self important.

Would you say that of Prisoners, Sol? The Hugh Jackman character is a guy who has to start a search from scratch. He believes he has the case sewn up in his head, but there is a fundamental point over which he is wrong and which he does not realise until much later. In fact, we do not experience this complete realisation from the one character. The full realisation passes into Loki's hands. It's what happens when evil bastards create disinformation so that it takes much investigation, time and effort for the truth seekers to achieve revelation.

That's the sort of thing which constitutes the epic film-going experience. Such eventfulness requires time for the quality experience to sink in.

I like the director's previous work well enough - I think he's a good director - and enjoyed BR2049. I have never read the book and quite like aspects of the Lynch film, mainly the big thing in a tank at the beginning and the disgusting bad guy, and the music. Hoping for a good Zimmer score too. The cast seems impressive. It has a chance.

Same here. People complain about Last Jedi, rightfully so, but I stayed through its duration. 2049 I left after 45 minutes. I don't think I'd ever walked out of a film till then.

Here is the trailer. I keep thinking there is this topic on the music side, but I can't find it.
Anyone recognize the music in this trailer?

Yes, as mentioned on the other side, it's Pink Floyd's "Eclipse".

I went in expecting Blade Runner 2049 to be merely “ok”, and at worse tarnishing the legacy of the original. But I loved it! Just like the original it rewards repeated viewings. I didn’t think it bettered the original, but I think it’s an amazing film in its own right, and has already garnered quite the cult audience/appreciation.

Afraid I was left rather unimpressed with the trailer for Dune. It looks.... drab? Nice design work on show, but where’s the sense of awe and wonder? Yes there was some scale and grandeur shown, but zero sense of fun and excitement about this epic too. It feels flat. I adore the book and it’s full of myriad different layers, emotions, intrigue, ecology, great characters, and fun too. Excitement about this world. I’m not sensing from this trailer alone that this is going to encourage people to rush out to leave the safety of their homes in these Covid times, especially if Blade Runner 2049 didn’t do well pre-covid and that had Harrison Ford returning to Deckard as an extra incentive too.

Hoping it’s a case of the first trailer not really being all that representative of the film itself. Fingers remain crossed. Love the cast and the possibilities, and I did love that impressive shot of the worm at the end though. Impressive scale.

Just came back from the film (in IMAX).

It's easily my favourite film of the year (so far). Denis Villeneuve is truly the new Ridley Scott in terms of both narrative depth and visual style. People weaned on Marvel and tapid blockbusters will no doubt find it dour and depressive, and call for the "fun" of it all, but I'm oh so thankful it doesn't have anything of that, and takes itself very seriously. Love the lower tempo, the dream segements, the vistas, the stagings. 2 1/2 hours flew by extremely quickly, and can't wait for part 2 (providing there will be a part 2).

Zimmer's score has some great parts. Absolutely love the GLADIATOR stylings for the fremen/the desert, all the music surrounding the prophecy and the use of vocals. That's the visionary Zimmer I had hoped for and expected. However, there are other parts -- mostly the action stuff with electric guitars and whatnot -- that becomes too much of a "loudness war". When the soundtrack comes out, I'm expecting to weed most of this stuff out (I have no doubt the soundtrack will be insanely long, as has been Zimmer's practice in recent years). There's a rhythmical, Tangerine Dream-like sequencer track that is very cool too; gets to shine in the middle part of the end credits. I see that Klaus Schulze has co-written a track with Zimmer, I wonder if that's it -- it's got the Berlin school nailed down, anyway.

High praise indeed from a big Ridley Scott fan. I'm almost tempted to see it on the big screen. Looking forward to the reviews of the new Bond.

Coming from Thor this is exactly the response he was guaranteed to give. Keep in mind the high praise he gave for Pompeii (2014).

You know what else is great?
Cutting and pasting the same post into 2 separate Dune threads.

Unintentionally funny AND ironic, given that it's Zimmer.

wink
