I know some people continue to travel ... maybe: have to ... but we cancelled our planned holiday and doubt we'll be leaving the UK this year ... we think it was 1994 that last happened. So, looking at some photos from yesteryear I thought about setting a challenge:

I think the sculpture is Anthony Gormley, but I don’t recall where it is. Somewhere in the north, I presume, having being invoked by Mitch

If it’s the Arc de Triomphe the names might be the successful first part (from the French point of view) of Napoleon’s occupation of the Iberian Peninsular, pretty much in reverse order to Wellington’s campaign booting (sorry) them out along with Spanish and Portuguese allies.
One day I want to follow the route the Iron Duke took and see places like Badajoz and Salamanca that I’ve only read about.

Full marks ... see, all that reading paid off! If I recall, there are walkways underground to reach the monument ... otherwise you've as much chance of reaching it as one of the cannon-fodder (in either N's or W's campaigns!)
Was one pic really Monte Cassino? I thought the castle pic looked Bavarian so googled that. But the Cassino one is a guess as it's a war cemetery and a mount at the back and I thought the only famous battle I could think of on a mountain from ww2 was that.

Yes, you guessed correctly. We stayed just outside the town and visited the war graves; afterwards we went up to the Abbey which was rebuilt after the war. I think it is a dramatic photo ...

The picturesque Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen, Schwangau in SW Bavaria is incredibly beautiful (and very popular with tourists). We turned away during our first attempt - too much traffic - but stayed locally a few years later, so as to be able to walk to the Castle. This dramatic view is taken from a wooden footbridge - we didn't bother to go inside as we understand it's not that interesting (the castle was never occupied). The front view is more common (e.g. used for jigsaws ) and, I understand, was Walt Disney's inspiration for Sleeping Beauty. Mitch

You have it! We arrived at our guest house on a damp dull afternoon and walked through to the back of the property, overlooking the coastal walkway and curved bay ... to see that structure in the bay. Until we got our bearings and the perspective right we thought it was for real!

I presume that would be Die Another Day, the sanatorium (or whatever) where the facial operations were carried out - haven’t see it for a while. Thought it might be Chernobyl at first but I think you might have mentioned it before if you’d been there!
Is the third one Schloss Adler, then? I can imagine an anachronistic helicopter landing there.

And, Graham, you being our resident Spanish guy, I'd have thought you'd have spotted that one ... it's not as if Spain is a big country. What's more both Cádiz and your residence are on the west coast so you're almost neigbours. And, yet, you identify Rome from a statue. Are you sure you don't live on the Italian west coast?
