I know some people continue to travel ... maybe: have to ... but we cancelled our planned holiday and doubt we'll be leaving the UK this year frown ... we think it was 1994 that last happened. So, looking at some photos from yesteryear I thought about setting a challenge:

All famous places - not in the UK - photo's taken by me:

Where was I ...?

Cassino, italy? for 3

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria for 2?

A nuclear power station that's not Dungeness for 1?

Is 1 Cape Canaveral? Cape Kennedy Space Centre?

Too easy! No, not a nuclear power plant smile

More difficult (one in the UK) being monuments of a sort ...

... might need TG to help out with the UK one ...

The arch seems to be inscribed with the names of Wellington’s victories in the Iberian campaign. Not aware of where it would be, though.

I think the sculpture is Anthony Gormley, but I don’t recall where it is. Somewhere in the north, I presume, having being invoked by Mitch smile

Ah, that I didn't know ... interesting. Given its location I do wonder whether the Duke is that revered ... but, then, I'm useless at history (not quite true but you'll understand)

A place for a new start not a million miles away.

The first pic could be said to have links to many threads on the other side ... sort of looking over a place of rest (albeit I'm only guessing ... I'm not sure if the location was announced).

If it’s the Arc de Triomphe the names might be the successful first part (from the French point of view) of Napoleon’s occupation of the Iberian Peninsular, pretty much in reverse order to Wellington’s campaign booting (sorry) them out along with Spanish and Portuguese allies.

One day I want to follow the route the Iron Duke took and see places like Badajoz and Salamanca that I’ve only read about.

Full marks ... see, all that reading paid off! If I recall, there are walkways underground to reach the monument ... otherwise you've as much chance of reaching it as one of the cannon-fodder (in either N's or W's campaigns!)

Was one pic really Monte Cassino? I thought the castle pic looked Bavarian so googled that. But the Cassino one is a guess as it's a war cemetery and a mount at the back and I thought the only famous battle I could think of on a mountain from ww2 was that.

Yes, you guessed correctly. We stayed just outside the town and visited the war graves; afterwards we went up to the Abbey which was rebuilt after the war. I think it is a dramatic photo ...

... and very pleased you were able to identify the setting.

The picturesque Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen, Schwangau in SW Bavaria is incredibly beautiful (and very popular with tourists). We turned away during our first attempt - too much traffic - but stayed locally a few years later, so as to be able to walk to the Castle. This dramatic view is taken from a wooden footbridge - we didn't bother to go inside as we understand it's not that interesting (the castle was never occupied). The front view is more common (e.g. used for jigsaws smile) and, I understand, was Walt Disney's inspiration for Sleeping Beauty.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea for the statue of the couple. Called "The Couple" I believe.

You have it! We arrived at our guest house on a damp dull afternoon and walked through to the back of the property, overlooking the coastal walkway and curved bay ... to see that structure in the bay. Until we got our bearings and the perspective right we thought it was for real!

No suggestions ... too easy or no idea (or not interested smile). Anyhow, for anyone who is interested but cannot identify the location:
The Quadriga of Unity on the summit of one of the two propylaea on the roof of the Victor Emmanuel II Monument in Rome

known as the wedding cake it's well worth the Euros to go by lift as it provides breath-taking views across the city. From the outside:

though there are better photo's on the web.

And another (last?) batch for anyone who is interested:

The second and third have well-known film connections ...The name's ... / ... calling ...; in each case the weather was significantly different on screen. The first is a location reportedly the biggest in Europe.

Perhaps someone else might post ...

Okay, this thread has received little following ...

... but I did think the final photo might have stirred some interest given the respective film's fans ... score, especially.

As for the JB007 pic ... it was when Spain stood in for Cuba.

Well Mitch, I enjoyed looking at the photos. I just didn't reply because I didn't know the answers (except for the ones from Rome, but I clicked on after they'd been identified).

Keep 'em coming!

I presume that would be Die Another Day, the sanatorium (or whatever) where the facial operations were carried out - haven’t see it for a while. Thought it might be Chernobyl at first but I think you might have mentioned it before if you’d been there!

Is the third one Schloss Adler, then? I can imagine an anachronistic helicopter landing there.

If it's Friday, this must be Belgium. And if it's Cuba, it must be Cádiz in Spain.

... anachronistic ... ... this is a spot the location quiz, Broadsword, ... not an English lesson!

And, Graham, you being our resident Spanish guy, I'd have thought you'd have spotted that one ... it's not as if Spain is a big country. What's more both Cádiz and your residence are on the west coast so you're almost neigbours. And, yet, you identify Rome from a statue. Are you sure you don't live on the Italian west coast?
