Played about a third of this on Spotify and it had a few nice moments but It really wasn't grabbing me musically. I'll try a second listen at some time.

I don't love it. There are a handful of tracks that I really enjoyed, but in my opinion HGW is capable of so much better, so I have to say I'm disappointed overall.

Since reading elsewhere that the main theme is a direct lift from John Powell's PAYCHECK score, I cannot unhear that now, which is mighty distracting when listening to it.

Here's my review, should anyone be interested:

Yes, it's harsh.

It seems I'm in the minority in really liking this one...and I'm usually a harsh critic of this particular composer. Sorry.

Yeah I don't think it's bad either. Some nice melodies in there and some good 'actiony' music.

As I said earlier I listened to about a third of the score on Spotify and was bored. Then I saw the film and I can confirm the score is a complete snoozed fest, just like the film itself. Wasted opportunity. I'm spinning Monkey King instead!

Deserved.

I think it’s funny that for all of Disney’s attempts to make the production of the movie as inclusive as possible, they still gave the score to HGW of all people. I know he had worked with the director before so I can understand why from that perspective.

Oh, Remote Control Productions, we can’t escape your grip can we...

Listening to the first track and enjoying it. Hoping to hear Jerry references later in the score.

Didn't notice any myself.

No Jerry references, as far as I could tell, but a few to the Wilder/Zippel song melodies.

If isn't one of the best by HGW, quite a solid effort for his recent years.

Before someone said something, enjoyed The Martian, Zookeeper's Wife and The Meg, all entertaning and fun scores, but Mulan is much better effort.

Okay, also, isn't as terrific as Goldsmith's score, but his use of ethnic instruments (clever use), action writing and the dramatic moments (the beginning of Mulan Rides into Battle or Mulan Leaves Home, are standouts), gave a reason for why Harry Gregson-Williams needs to make more scores like this, because, i don't think we can get something like Sinbad or Kingdom of Heaven.

Yikes, really? I consider THE MARTIAN one of HGW's best scores of his entire career, and easily in my top 10 that year. MULAN is not even in the same ballpark.

If you compare The Martian with something like Kingdom of Heaven or even Narnia, isn't something as good like those scores, even Mulan.

Don't get me wrong, is good score, i played a lot time to time, but there are muuch better HGW's works.

Oh, certainly. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is his magnum opus (so far). That's in a whole other league altogether.

Agreed. And Chicken Run which he did alongside with John Powell, is phenomenal in its own right.

I agree. The Martian has so much more personality than Mulan.

The Martian is a good score is in own right, but when HGW writes themes and thematic material, isn't comparable.

Mulan has thematic material much recognizable than The Martian, even this one his better than things like Deja Vu or Phone Booth.

Hmm, gave this a try. Its kinda video gamey sounding. The cues all sound the same. I'm not a big fan of churchy/monky music. A little goes a long way.

The Martian was okay. I enjoyed it but its not memorable or something I care to go back to.
