We've been sitting on this for over a year now. I really thought it would never be releasable, other than maybe about ten minutes. But on a whim I sent it to Chris Malone, who's been doing such amazing work restoring problematic material - he began with the worst-sounding of the tracks and when I heard the result I could not believe my ears, so it was full speed ahead from that point on. He worked complete miracles.

Thank you, sir. There are some other dispiriting threads on this board where certain people have deemed it necessary to purposely not mention Kritzerland as a soundtrack label that should be thought of as good if at all. I think any label that has issued twenty-four to twenty-six albums a year with composers like Waxman, Raksin, Grusin, Goldsmith, Williams, many Elmer Bernsteins, Friedhofer, Newman, Donaggio, Herrmann, North, Antheil, Hefti, Victor Young, Zimmer and many others deserves at least a little mention - but some people have agendas and there's nothing to be done about it. Thankfully there are many on this board who understand exactly what we're doing and why we're doing it. And to them - hearty thanks. To the handful of others, especially the latest twit - big ol' raspberries.

Bruce, 2 quick questions:
1.) Could Chris Malone do something with Friedhofer's Soldier of Fortune tracks? I thought Lukas said at the time he did the cd that there were more tracks but in damaged condition etc. And maybe Chris could improve the tracks that are on the cd now.
2.) China Gate was at least issued through Fox. Does Fox or someone else have the tracks? It's a great score by Max Steiner & Victor Young!

Fox doesn't own China Gate anymore. We're looking at Soldier of Fortune and others in terms of seeing if there's anything to be done. The damage to Fox tracks is very different and has to do with the optical tracks going bad in ways that are impossible to fix, at least I think that's what it is. We're having that issue right now and have to lose a couple of tracks on a Fox project - after hearing exactly what the damage was, there are no miracles that could save it.

CHINA GATE, a Globe Enterprises film originally distributed by Fox, is now controlled by Viacom/Paramount through the Republic library and the LionsGate distributorship. It recently came out on a licensed Blu-ray from Olive Films. I'll bet the original tracks---if they still exist---are lost in the morass like so many other independently-produced films.
The original SOLDIER OF FORTUNE tracks would be magnetic, not optical, but likely suffer from wow and flutter, due to shrinkage, stretching, or vinegaring of the film base, and from erratic dropouts of the magnetic particles no longer binding to the base stock.
Sometimes you can save these things, other times during transfer playback the coating flakes away from the base into brown dust in piles below or clogged onto the mag heads, even as you watch it play back.
Still.....I'm rooting for Bruce and the possibility that more of SOLDIER OF FORTUNE might be saved.
As someone who is primarily interested in Golden Age or early Silver Age scores, I now look to Bruce and his Kritzerland as the key entrepreneurs giving us this older stuff in superb editions, and I always look forward to his announcements---usually every two weeks or so. I'm thrilled about A PLACE IN THE SUN (as well as the other Paramount scores he's delivered), and all the Fox scores he (and Nick R.) have given us.
It seems to me that sooner or later, the other studios (beyond Fox, MGM Entertainment, and Paramount)---like Warners (including old MGM, RKO, and Allied Artists), Columbia, and Universal---will catch on and realize that Bruce Kimmel and Kritzerland are now really the only viable and successful marketers for the "older" filmmusic catalogs and will allow them access to this part of their music library before long.
Bruce now does it the best!!!
