The samples on the Intrada website are terrific, so I think the sound quality is crisp and with no distorsions at all....

How does TBC sound? Any distortions?

No worries - the sound quality is great. No crackles or distortions.

Just received this album and am thoroughly enjoying it. I've heard the Varese re-recording from 1985, but this is a WHOLE new listening experience -- much larger orchestra with spooky use of chorus. Terrific sound quality -- pristine, I'd say! And the booklet is very attractive and informative. Especially loved seeing the double-page spread of the cauldron-borne coming toward the lens. That has always been a favorite still of mine from the movie.

Thanks for another great job, Intrada!

My first exposure to this score outside of the end credits piece on a Bernstein compilation from Varese and I really enjoyed it. There is a lot of thematic variety spread around this score, plus wonderful textures and instrumentation both lovely and dark.

Got this Monday and I'm loving it. Excellent performances.

Anyone with a flair for tinkering have any advice on how to mimic the flow of the rerecording using the new release? Despite favoring the Intrada performance-wise I do think the Varese presentation is well-conceived...

I just got mine. I'm not crazy about the sound to be perfectly frank. It's drenched in reverb (like Poltergeist II or the 70s Bond scores). It's great to finally have it, but in terms of sound/overall blend, the Varese CD is better.

I gave this score a good thorough listen and, despite having some great music, I found it quite the chore to listen to completely. It's also a fairly fragmented listening experience, very little flow whatsoever.

And in the end, I found myself gravitating more to the better arranged rerecording.

Listening to this for the first time now on our home stereo system, the sound quality is excellent--full-bodied and crisp---and the score itself unrelentingly marvelous.

If there were a constellation named Elmer Bernstein, this would be one of its brightest stars. <-- corny!

I don't hear any reverb. This is an excellent sounding CD. The sound is upfront and clear.

You honestly don't hear any reverb? It's as plain as day to me.

Every FART, if made by intrada, sounds perfect to you little bitch.

Wow...created a new username just to insult me...again? YAWN.

Anyway, The Black Cauldron is a phenomenal release and was way better than I was expecting it to be. It sounds great to my ears and I loved it when I listened to it the other day.

I have to concur it's one of the "wetter"-sounding CD releases I've heard in recent years, but I like reverb myself, and in this case it suits the fantasy aspect of the music. A wonderful score (I describe it as "Heavy Metal for kids") and terrific release all-round.

For me as well. Not sure why the Disney folks who mixed the album felt it was necessary but I find it distracting and mars the overall presentation.

So, I guess I can put this release on the back burner now, until Intrada announces that it is going to go out of print,
then I can get it?

From what I can hear from the clips there doesn't seem to be any reverb. I may not be an astute listener, but I can tell it sounds very good from those clips.

Now there some people who complaining about not using the original poster art for the cover when this first came out. Well, I was looking through the concept art section of my DVD copy of the film and found a concept art painting of the cauldron that looked almost exactly like the new cover art. So if they had to choose something that was not the original poster art, at least they chose some good concept art.
