There’s one particular revelation in Tim’s notes that really surprised me — something he got directly from the mouth of a certain musician, so to speak! I was kinda shocked when he revealed that in the conversation we had on Saturday… can’t wait for folks to hear the Soundtrack Spotlight. (It’ll be a meaty one with two great guests — the other being Chris Malone! — so it’ll probably take longer than a week to come out…) I was also tickled that Tim gave Crawlspace a shout-out in his notes! For anyone enjoying The Other and wanting to hear another lovely/sensitive Goldsmith score from the same year, punctuated with some choice moments of action and horror as well… please consider joining the Kickstarter campaign for Crawlspace/Pursuit/The People Next Door which has just over three days remaining! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lpfilmmusic/record-jerry-goldsmiths-scores-for-pursuit-and-crawlspace For only £12 you get a lossless CD quality download and full PDF liner notes booklet for all three TV movies score premieres. For £15 plus shipping you get an Intrada-produced CD edition of the same, a month earlier and a couple bucks cheaper than if you wait for the wide retail release. Yavar

HEY VARESE PRODUCERS, HEAR ME !!!!! With so much room on this cd left it really seems like an missed opputunity not to also include that suite this score was previously releases by as a bonus

Just because there's extra space on a disc doesn't mean something should automatically be used to fill it. It makes sense sometimes, like on Varese's Deluxe Editions of L.A. Confidential and City Hall, where the album program had unique pieces which were substantially different from the film versions of those cues. I'll be surprised if anyone misses that old suite of The Other, after hearing this new complete presentation. The strong impression I have (I'm sure Bruce will correct me if I'm wrong) is that weird single track wasn't really some kind of curated OST arrangement, but more a stitching together of cues (and pieces of cues) which survived with the least amount of damage. In our recent conversation, restorationist Chris Malone suggested that was almost certainly why some of the most lengthy/meaty cues were left off that presentation, and that even with included cues, there was editing being done to avoid damage. So why recreate such a frankly unsatisfying presentation of the score, that only existed as it did out of necessity and lack of restoration tech at the time? Just to fill in empty space on the disc, even if redundant with the far superior program? I guess you were also disappointed that Varese chose not to include the 16 minutes single track Escape from the Planet of the Apes suite after their complete score program when they released that as a standalone. But I'm glad to be rid of that old suite, frankly... the score really shines far better in this new Deluxe Edition program. And unlike TerraEpon, I'm not even against OST programs being included, usually. They can have unique takes/edits and do usually represent some creative decisions of the composer. I just don't think that was the case here. And egads was including the semi-source cue (which we now know is titled "Chan Yu") in the middle of that old suite just a terrible artistic decision, IMO. Completely damaged the flow of this lovely score. Yavar

Actually at only 45 minutes for the complete score, Thor is not so opposed as you might think: “I never got the THE MEPHISTO WALTZ/THE OTHER CD way back when, although I'm fairly certain I sampled the album at some point. Although now presented in full, the relatively manageable duration of some 40+ minutes shouldn't cause too much harm. I'll definitely be checking it out and maybe even acquiring it in digital file format. It's not my favourite Goldsmith period, but it IS from a time he pushed boundaries to a greater extent, and as such has that extra layer of intellectual interest.” https://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/37125-jerry-goldsmiths-the-other-1972-new-2024-varese-deluxe-edition/&do=findComment&comment=2050385 I know… I was a bit surprised too. I remember being traumatized by this film when I saw it on TV as a kid. That was long before I paid any attention to film music, and I have no memory of having any reaction to Jerry Goldsmith's score. Jump ahead 50 years -- I have generally avoided horror movie scores, and so I never bothered to listen to this one, even though I am a huge Goldsmith fan. But when I first heard the samples, I knew that I had really missed the boat. Now I have the CD and a new appreciation for this Goldsmith classic. I still don't think I could stomach the film.

Dr. Channing, it fascinates me how some shun horror while others embrace it. A discussion for another thread, perhaps. Hear Hear Amigo! And Doc Channing, the film is more subtle mystery than outright horror. It does play to one's psyche, but has none of the tropes of the era. A very good film, worth seeing! While I'm here, my copy came today too. Fairly well packaged I guess, from VA....SAE country! No receipt or packing slip, just the discs (Eye of the Needle also, since you asked...). I want to herald the hiccups of the dark time in Varese shipping is over, but....who knows. Quickly, timely shipped, in fine order. I guess it's safe to carry on with them now? I hope!
