Speaking of the GODZILLA VS. GIGAN cues, here's a puzzler: What is the original title of the cue M12T2 from BOSS OF THE UNDERWORLD (aka, THE BIG BOSS)? That's the dramatic fanfare that was used at the beginning of GIGAN's main title. I saw a non-subtitled copy of BOSS a few years ago, and the brief cue was heard during a nightmarish dream sequence experienced by Akira Takarada's character. I've always wondered if the cue had a name, but I believe it's only listed by number in the Futureland and Toho Music GIGAN booklets.

I certainly remember that sequence in "Boss of the Underworld". Yeah, it's always been listed by cue number.

I had some downtime, so I threw together the following discography of all of Futureland's Kaiju Eiga/Sci-Fi/Ifukube-related releases (titles in italics are concert works or non-sci-fi scores by Ifukube). The Futureland imprint appears to have fizzled out soon after the turn of the millennium.

That's about as comprehensive as one can get! Youmex/Futureland, at the time a subsiduary of Toshiba EMI, went defunct in 1998 and was absorbed back into Toshiba EMI. Releases under the Futureland label ceased a few years after. Toshiba EMI itself went defunct in 2013. I believe it was absorbed into Universal Music Japan.

FYI, the catalog number for this 2-CD release is AI-2014-1 / AI-2014-2.

Thanks for posting this, and this is definitely one of the rarest Godzilla CD sets ever released!

One of the bonus tracks at the end of disc 1, is actually the 1994 re-recording of "Godzilla: King Of The Monsters", that was previously found only on the 1994 King of Monsters 10CD/1LD boxed set! In my opinion, the remastering is exceptional on this 1994 re-recorded suite and it's a great bonus track to have on this 2014 2CD set.

For those who have any of the Futureland releases (Godzilla and otherwise), which ones do you have?

I currently have the following:

Complete Recordings: Akira Ifukube Special Effects Film Music Toho Edition 10 (TYCY-5342·43)
Godzilla Complete Works Collection 2 - Godzilla's Counterattack (TYCY-5346)
Godzilla Complete Works Collection 11 - Godzilla vs. Hedorah (TYCY-5355)
Toho Monster Film Selection 1 - Giant Monster of the Sky: Rodan (TYCY-5498)
Toho Monster Film Selection 2 - Earth Defense Force (TYCY-5499)
Toho Monster Film Selection 4 - Great Space War (TYCY-5501)
Toho Monster Film Selection 5 - Undersea Battleship (TYCY-5502)
Toho Monster Film Selection 9 - Latitude 0 Great Military Battle (TYCY-5506)
Toho Monster Film Selection 11 - Gezora, Ganimes, Kamoebas: Decisive Battle! Giant Monsters of the South Seas (TYCY-5508)

I obtained the majority of the albums back in November, with Godzilla Complete Works Collection 2 being purchased late last month and arriving on February 1st. Amazingly, most of them were still sealed at the time of purchase.

Interesting, you only have two Godzilla soundtrack CDs from the 1993 Futureland set, but at least you have HEDORAH, which is your favorite Godzilla score.

At this stage though, I would probably recommend picking up some of the 2004-2010 Godzilla Perfect Boxed Sets instead, especially Box 3, which has the HEDORAH soundtrack CD, and this one contains two very rare versions of the record songs, that are actually sung by a different singer, and this is the only CD that has them!

Another one I felt they did a brilliant job on was "Gorath". My friend at Cinema-kan told me that "Gorath" had the lengthiest restoration period of any of their releases up to that point. It makes sense as the stereo magnetic film elements (known as Cinetape in Japan) had deteriorated which resulted in problems such as issues with pitch.

I noticed that in your blog post for "Gorath", you mentioned the 1991 Victor release of the score (coupled with "Japan Sinks"), which was in mono and incomplete. Are you familiar with the 1995 edition of "Gorath" on SLC (SLCS-5069)? It was part of the label's Cult Science Fiction Movies series, and it presented the complete score in stereo except for a few outtakes. I haven't played it in awhile (or compared it to the Cinema Kan edition), but I recall it sounding quite good.

Yeah, I just started getting around to collecting them. My Futureland purchases were more or less a stroke of luck. Long story short, I swear those albums were specifically waiting for me to purchase them. As mentioned, most were still sealed. With those that weren't, all but one were still in their original shrink wrap. In addition to the condition they were in, the prices they were going for were unbeatable. I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but I even got Complete Recordings 10 for roughly its original retail price. Taking into account the condition they were all in and the prices they were being sold for, I was shocked that no one bought them. I'm pretty sure I was the one destined to get them. LOL!

"Godzilla Raids Again" is my favorite Godzilla score from Sato, which is why I chose to get that one. I love the dark and brooding nature of the score, which is why I love some of his earlier scores. Speaking of Sato, have you gotten the Men and War set released by Three Shells? Those scores are brilliant.

I am considering getting the Perfect Collection boxes as the booklets for the Futureland Godzilla releases are so infuriatingly barebones among other reasons.

I remember listening to the record single you mentioned, though I prefer Keiko Mari's versions of the songs.

First of all, thanks for visiting my blog! It's essentially a database for the Japanese scores in my collection, so I don't include reviews or anything like that. To everyone here who has visited my blog or continues to do so, I greatly appreciate it! I hope the information I provide has been of some use. I'm currently behind on posts, but expect more soon.

As for the SLC release of "Gorath", I definitely know of it along with the rest of series. I even had the pleasure of listening to them in the past. Yes, "Gorath" did sound relatively good despite the deterioration of the magnetic film elements. However, I found their release of "The H-Man" to be strange though, as it has an odd mirrored stereo imaging/simulated stereo effect applied to it. It actually reminded me of the isolated score track for "Godzilla Raids Again" found on that film's Japanese DVD release. It too had that odd stereo effect.

You know, I tried to search for information on it the other day, but found hardly anything. Not even a track list. I even searched the album's Japanese title and still came up with next to nothing. I'd love to see the track list.

I've been a regular visitor for the past couple of years (I follow the blog's Facebook page as well). You do a great job of spotlighting the new acquisitions in your collection, and I particularly enjoy your comprehensive photos of the packaging (the shipping boxes are a nice touch too). As an packaging buff myself, your approach strikes a chord - from my point of view, a Japanese CD with no obi is just a CD smile

The Toho Cult Science Fiction Film series is a treasure, and just as essential to me as the Futureland soundtracks. For those unfamiliar with this set, it consists of the following titles:

The H-Man (SLCS-5063)
Mothra (SLCS-5064)
Matango (SLCS-5065)
Secret of the Telegian (SLCS-5066)
The Human Vapor (SLCS-5067)
Madame White Snake (SLCS-5068)
Gorath (SLCS-5069)

My other prized Toho soundtrack, overlooked by both Futureland and SLC, is "The Last War" (1961), initially released on Victor (VICL-5082) in 1991. It features a truly great, unsung score by Ikuma Dan, which finally received a deluxe, 2-CD reissue by Toho Music years later. But I have a soft spot for the original Victor edition (which was in stereo, no less).

I must admit, I didn't pick up on the "fake stereo" effect on "The H-Man" disc - I'll have to give it another spin!

Well, I'm glad that the ones you have found so far were for great prices and were still shrinkwrapped. I also prefer to buy rare or out of print CDs that are still factory sealed when possible, and for the best prices as well, but I have been known to spend a lot on a rare CD once in a while, if I really wanted it badly enough.

Hmm, I don't think Godzilla Raids Again makes for a very good stand-alone listening experience, but I do think it's one of the coolest Godzilla soundtrack CDs to own, and I really like having it in my CD collection. I believe I no longer have the 1993 Futureland edition, but I do have the Godzilla Perfect Collection CD! Ah, you just reminded me about that 2020 Masaru Sato Men and War 2CD set...wow, so those scores are great to listen too? I do like his "Men and War" theme a lot though...I might have it on a Masaru Sato live concert CD actually, but yes, I think I need to pick up the Three Shells 2CD set one day!

Yes, the Godzilla Perfect Collection booklets are fantastic...on par with the Cinema-kan booklets, and I really do think that picking up a few of the Perfect Collection boxed sets would be an easy way for you to acquire many of the Godzilla soundtrack CDs at one time, plus they have the added bonus content as well. Yes. Keiko Mari's versions are the definitive ones, and she is the better singer, but I really like those two alternate record versions as well, and I never knew they even existed until the Godzilla vs Hedorah Perfect CD was released.

By the way, I mentioned the Godzilla 1984 soundtrack in a pervious post, but do you like that score? It's actually become a personal favorite Godzilla soundtrack for me and it's also a hard-to-find Godzilla soundtrack CD as well, but the ultimate edition of this score is in Godzilla Perfect Collection Box 4 - it has superior audio quality and more content than the 1993 Futureland CD.

Thank you very much! I do try to do a good job with my posts. I'm always making some changes to the blog, mostly minor things. I also regularly tweak various posts, especially if I spot a mistake or need to update the translation of a film and/or album title in addition to any updates a post may need. Recently, I contemplated adding more to the Description portion of the posts to include number of booklet pages and a list of booklet contents for each album. However, I felt that will be a bit time consuming to do, especially since putting together each post can be time consuming to begin with. As mentioned before, I'm seriously behind on posts, so I currently can't do anything to make things anymore time consuming than they already are.

I'm glad you like the Photo Gallery portion for the posts. That wasn't something I did originally. Since I didn't have a scanner at the time, I took photos of the entire booklet of each album I obtained (including the packaging). Eventually, I felt the inclusion of some of those photos to be a great addition to the blog to provide viewers with a POV shot of me viewing the booklets. When I got a scanner back in November, I decided to replace most of the photos with scans of certain pages so viewers can get a better look at said pages. All posts prior to me getting that scanner will not have any of the photos replaced with scans, they will be left as is. I agree, the obi is an important factor with Japanese releases, CD or otherwise. It's a major addition that makes Japanese releases so unique.

Yes, those SLC albums are a real treasure. I plan to eventually seek out copies of some of them (maybe all for the sake of completeness). If I end up doing so, the first I'll seek out is Secret of the Telegian.

I agree, the Victor release of "The Last War" is overlooked. Hopefully, I can obtain a copy of it in the future. The Toho Music release was one of many of their releases I've sampled in the past. While I love the inclusion of the mono recordings (I typically prefer mono over stereo), the added reverb and other audio issues common with Toho Music's releases made it unlistenable for me unfortunately.

I remember planning on spending over $300 for a single album close to ten years ago. Of course, I didn't in the end.

Hmm, I don't think Godzilla Raids Again makes for a very good stand-alone listening experience, but I do think it's one of the coolest Godzilla soundtrack CDs to own, and I really like having it in my CD collection. What make's a score a stand-alone experience is definitely up to each individual. However, people seem to forget that many scores were not composed for stand-alone listening experiences, but rather to supplement the films they were composed for.

Sato's score is actually quite experimental. He composed two different Godzilla themes for the film, and manipulated them by recording them at 50 Hz (normal recording frequency), then processed them onto tapes being recorded at either 58 Hz or 62 Hz, then playing those tapes at 50 Hz. The result being different pitches of the two cues. In addition, he then reversed the playback of one of those variants for the Osaka Castle confrontation. In addition, Sato recorded various gong, harp and cymbal pieces which he would also reverse the playback. Some of these were overlayed onto the title cue to create said cue as heard in the film.

The unfortunate thing about the Futureland release of the score is the exclusion of the title cue.

Indeed, his Men and War scores are excellent! I swear I heard a cue or two that reminded me of something Goldsmith could have done.

I agree, the Perfect Collection boxes would be a quicker way to obtain the scores. The Millennium scores are especially of interest as they are greatly expanded from their original releases.

I too like the alternate record versions of the "Hedorah" songs as well. Both versions have their own merits. Speaking of Mari, I own an album featuring the music from the Toho television series, "The Sign Is V" (1969 - 1970). Mari provided the vocals for the theme song and an additional song. Also, the score, composed by Go Misawa, is excellent.

I am indeed a fan of that score. I do recall the Perfect Collection release having better overall audio quality. The added content makes it even better! By the way, I have the first score Reijiro Koroku composed, for a 1978 television series titled "Youth Center!". It has some nice music. It's actually part of a series from VAP that also includes that Go Misawa album I mentioned above. I even recently obtained another album from that CD series, music from a mid 60's Toho television series titled "What Is Youth", composed by Taku Izumi.

I remember planning on spending over $300 for a single album close to ten years ago. Of course, I didn't in the end.

Ah, you "almost" spent $300 on a CD...smile

I did spend $200 on a rare 1996 Kosuke Kindaichi Columbia Soundtrack Library compilation CD...are you familiar with some of those films and the music? I won this CD bidding on a Yahoo Japan Auction, but unfortunately, I had to bid to just under Y20000 to win it.

Well, I'm glad you really like the soundtrack to Godzilla Raids Again...I do like that score as well, it can be a treat to listen to it sometimes. Wow, you certainly know what's what, when it comes to what Sato did to record this score!

The unfortunate thing about the Futureland release of the score is the exclusion of the title cue.

Indeed, his Men and War scores are excellent! I swear I heard a cue or two that reminded me of something Goldsmith could have done.

Hmm, what title cue are you referring to that's missing from the Futureland Godzilla Raids Again CD, and is it on the Perfect Collection version? I do have the Godzilla Raids Again Perfect CD.

Well, I might really need to pick up that Men and War 2CD set one day. I think I read it's limited to only 300 copies, is that correct? I also noticed that Three Shells released an Ikuma Dan CD comp as well.

Well, what are you waiting for...maybe pick up a Godzilla Perfect Box soon...smile Yes, Box 6 with the Millennium scores is loaded with extra content...it's amazing actually.

I don't think I ever heard music from "The Sign Is V" Toho TV series, but I'm sure Keiko Mari's songs are great to listen too.

Yes, the Godzilla 1984 Perfect Collection CD is a real winner actually, and even if Cinema-kan ever reissued this soundtrack, I don't know if they could ever improve upon the Toho Music Perfect edition. I have heard a few other things from Reijiro Koroku, but not his first score from '78. I tend to believe that his best score might be Godzilla 1984, unless there is a real gem out there that he composed?

You know, I tried to search for information on it the other day, but found hardly anything. Not even a track list. I even searched the album's Japanese title and still came up with next to nothing. I'd love to see the track list.

Here you go. It's a pretty straightforward selection - original "Godzilla" soundtrack cues (plus a couple of latter-day interpretations) on Disc 1, and highlights from Ifukube's subsequent Showa and Heisei Godzilla scores on Disc 2. The "King King vs. Godzilla" cues are from the stereo mix of the soundtrack (and are inferior, in my opinion, to their mono counterparts, which pack far more punch).

Disc 1:

GODZILLA (1954)
1. Main Title (M2 + M1)
2. Eiko-Maru Sinking (M3)
3. Bingo-Maru Sinking (M4)
4. Uneasiness on Odo Island (M5)
5. Ritual Music of Odo Island (M6)
6. Storm on Odo Island (M7T1)
7. Odo Island Theme (M9)
8. Frigate March 1 (M11)
9. Horror in the Water Tank (M13)
10. Attack Godzilla! (M16)
11. Shinagawa Pandemonium (M14)
12. Fury of Godzilla (MA’)
13. Deadly Broadcast (MB)
14. Godzilla to Tokyo Bay (MC)
15. Devastated Tokyo (M19)
16. Oxygen Destroyer (M20)
17. Prayer For Peace
18. Frigate March II (M21)
19. Godzilla Under the Sea (M22)
20. Ending (M23)
21. Godzilla Suite - 1954 (from 1994 “King of Monsters” box set)
22. Godzilla - Live recording from the 2nd Akira Ifukube Music Festival, March 16, 2008 (“Footsteps & Cries”, “Main Title”, “Frigate March”, “Fury of Godzilla”, “Ending”)

Disc 2:

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (1962)
1. Main Title (M1)
2. Godzilla’s Resurrection (M10)
3. The Plan to Transport King Kong (M27)
4. King Kong vs. Godzilla II (M29B)

MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (1964)
5. The Sacred Fountain (PS-99 Mix)
6. Adult Mothra vs. Godzilla (M21)
7. Mahala Mothra (PS-19PB Mix)

GHIDRAH, THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER (1964)
8. The Birth of King Ghidorah (M12)
9. The Greatest Battle on Earth II (M21)

MONSTER ZERO (1965)
10. Monster Mega-War March (M23)

DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968)
11. Main Title/Title Credits (M1 + M2T4)

TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (1975)
12. Main Title (M1)

GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH (1991)

18. Battra Against the Self-Defense Forces (M16B)
19. Birth of the Larva Mothra (M26 uptempo)
20. The Cocoon at the Diet Building (M28)

GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA (1993)
21. Godzilla vs. Rodan (M6)

Yeah, "almost"! It was for an album increbula has, Dozoku no Ranjo/Han Geinou Mandala (TYCY-5473). I decided to use the money for other things.

Well, I'm glad you really like the soundtrack to Godzilla Raids Again...I do like that score as well, it can be a treat to listen to it sometimes. Wow, you certainly know what's what, when it comes to what Sato did to record this score!

I always felt it's one of those scores people warm up to. They may not be impressed at first, but come around over time. Thanks! What I said is based on what little information there is on the Futureland release of the score.

It is indeed on the Perfect Collection disc, track 24 (M1AT2 Other).

Yes, it's limited to 300 copies. I also have their Ikuma Dan set, and it's great, containing a plethora of rare material. It too is limited to 300 copies.

If the opportunity arises, I'll try to start grabbing them. I'm not sure which one I'd get first. I'll prebaby grab the first box and work my way to the sixth.

Yes, her songs for "The Sign Is V" are great! The album was one of the best purchases I made. Unfortunately, there is a lot from the score that remains unreleased.

There is indeed a gem out there! It's a film known as "Under Aurora". Futureland released the score, but I assume it's quite rare.

Thank you very much increbula, for providing the track list to the Akira Ifukube Godzilla Film Music Collection set! Seeing it was certainly gratifying.

Speaking of Ifukube's "Godzilla" '54, I made a custom version of the score to better approximate the cues as heard in the film. My track list is as follows (includes the proper cue numbers):

01. Main Title (DB-1 M-1·2)
02. Sinking of the Eiko-Maru (DB-2 M-3)
03. Sinking of the Bingo-Maru (DB-3 M-4)
04. Anxiety of Odo Island (DB-7 M-5)
05. Kagura of Odo Island (DB-10 M-6)
06. Storm at Odo Island (DB-11 M-7)
07. Research Vessel Departure (DB-13 M-8 (DB-20 M-11))
08. Theme of Odo Island (DB-15 M-9)
09. Frigate March I (DB-20 M-11)
10. Horror of the Water Tank (DB-28 M-13)
11. Shinagawa Chaos (DB-30 M-14=A + DB-11 M-7)
12. Destruction of Shinagawa (DB-31 M-15 (DB-14A M-A'))
13. Intercept Godzilla (DB-34 M-16)
14. Second Landing (DB-37 M-17 (DB-30 M-14=A))
15. Godzilla's Fury I ~ Fire Brigade (DB-39 M-18A (M-A' + DB-34 M-16))
16. Godzilla's Fury II ~ Desperate Broadcast (DB-43 (DB-14A M-A' + M-B))
17. Godzilla to Tokyo Bay ~ Last Assault (DB-44 M-18D (M-C + DB-1 M-1))
18. Devastation of the Imperial Capital (DB-46 M-19)
19. Oxygen Destroyer (DB-47 M-20)
20. Prayer for Peace (PS)
21. Frigate March II (DB-50 M-21)
22. Godzilla Under the Sea (DB-52 M-22)
23. Ending (DB-53 M-23)

Bonus Tracks
24. Main Title (DB-1 M-1)
25. Main Title (Footsteps and Roars) (DB-1 M-2)
26. Godzilla Landing (DB-30 M-14=A)
27. Godzilla's Fury (DB-14A M-A')
28. Desperate Broadcast (M-B)
29. Godzilla to Tokyo Bay (M-C)

BTW, this, THIS, THIS is GODZILLA!!! Not the American abomination version. How freaking hard is it to get Zilla's design right?

Heh. That was sort of the point of my little joke earlier.
There IS a ton of helpful info here, but in the future you'd only know how to find it if you happen to remember it was in a LP box set thread.
The search function can be finicky.

That's true. I would certainly welcome a new thread devoted to general discussion of Japanese Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy soundtracks, if anyone wants to cast the first stone.
