Okay... I’ll admit the overhead shot of the gangs’ shadows approaching each other was impressive. Other than that, I’m not enthusiastic about this. Also, I really hope those percussion strikes during the “Somewhere” instrumental are only in the trailer and not in the actual movie score.

No Newman credit here either. Curious.

I thought the trailer looked very good. I wanted more, not just a teaser. I do want to see this in a theater with a great sound system.

I know it was just a teaser, but it sold me. I have high hopes.

I wouldn't expect Newman to get a credit on these things. My understanding is that he's conducting, and doing some adaptation, but it's the Bernstein/Sondheim music we're hearing.

He didn't conduct since apparently they so desperately needed to get Dudamel or someone else to conduct.

With Mr Dudamel, they brought on not only a talented conductor but the production team has made a smart choice from a marketing POV. I can't see any desperation in signing him early in the process (2019).

As far as David Newman is concerned, he has been signed to compose (transitions adaptation) and conduct music.

Sparse comments have been made by Mr Newman about this assignment, no more no less.

It´s really good teaser. I think Spielberg is one of the greatest directors ever. I want to see this movie.

I don´t know why this had to be remade - probably Spielberg just wanted to do this.

If it turns out to be a vanity project that does not add anything new, it will be unfortunate.

But I have high hopes that this will be a wonderful movie experience.

I'm not into musicals at all so I had zero interest in this movie - except that it is directed by Spielberg. And this trailer looks sooo Spielberg that now I want to see the film just because of it.

Looks fine by me.
Some great visual flourishes in that trailer.
And if anyone can pull this off, in this day and age, Spielberg can.
Like Joan says, it will be fun to see this on a Big Screen, in a cinema.

The Robert Wise original is still in great "shape".
But what always "bothered" me about it was,- when looking at the gangs in the Wise Production-, how nerdy and non ganglike they all looked.
So I imagined ...when hearing that there was a new movie coming up, that it might be transported into nowadays. But I guess with Spielberg being the director / producer, it was clear that it was approached as a pure remake set in the 50ies.
It would have been interesting to see ( like Di Caprio´s ROMEO AND JULIET ) the whole setting being transported into today.
The music is immortal .... and not bound to any time I guess...and Spielberg almost always delivers.

Other than the visuals which were gorgeous the trailer was awful. The opening shots and whistling gave me chills reminding me of the original, but then it was ruined with unnecessary sound effects. The music/song did not fit the mood/scenes in the trailer. The song sounded like the same distorted, creepy sad rendition we've heard from other famous songs in trailers lately. The performance of the song was cringe, and I hope that's not the quality of the singing in the film.

Agreed, if its the exact same thing with modern editing and sound effects it would be a pointless (and inferior) remake and a vanity project. There's really no reason to remake the film to begin with. It's a classic.

Yes, the gangs were punks more than anything else. I didn't mind the clean look of the production or lack of grit. Its a musical about gangs who whistle, sing and snap their fingers together. It's a fantasy.

The teaser is interesting. I am heartened that Spielberg apparently had the good sense to preserve Robbins' choreography. Also, it looks like the dancers have been photographed head to toe so audiences can fully see the dancing. I was afraid he would take the "music video" route like what was done, for example, in CHICAGO. Fingers crossed.

Quite right, it's Dudamel. I'd forgotten. Though I don't know why you'd say they "desperately needed" him to do it. I guess you just made that part up to make them look silly and craven.

Getting back to the credit thing, Alex Heffes did on the "Sweeney Todd" movie what I assume David Newman is doing here, and he didn't get poster or trailer credit, either. (John Williams did on the "Fiddler on the Roof" movie, though he altered those orchestrations quite substantially… and, in my opinion, not for the better.)

As for why there should be a new "West Side Story," I would ask why shouldn't there be, just as there should be a new "Hamlet" or "Oliver Twist" or "A Star is Born." I feel like there are three dozen new versions of "Pinocchio" coming out. Their duty is to be good, not to replace. They can all exist.

Obviously, it's a matter of opinion, but to me, the Robert Wise version seems incredibly sanitized now, with gangs dancing in colorful windbreakers while spray-painting “Sharks Stink!” on brick walls (how rude!). No reason anybody who loves that shouldn't, but I don't think that has to be the one version of a landmark play for all time.

Incidentally, the 2021 TCM Classic Film Festival is being presented virtually. The festival opens with the original WSS on May 6 at 8PM ET. The presentation will feature a reunion conversation with cast members Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn and George Chakiris. It's always fun to hear anecdotes from people who participated in classic films. You can watch on the TCM channel or HBO Max.

Yeah, just from this teaser Spielberg's version already looks more vital and better-acted--I've really tuned out of Spielberg's more recent output and I'm not a giant fan of musicals (although I have a great sentimental attachment to both West Side Story and The Sound of Music) but this grabbed my attention from the opening few shots. And I too expected it to be updated and I'm kind of glad it's not--the period feel adds an extra dimension to it.

I agree with Schiffy. The original was great. Let's hope the new one is also great.

I am not a fan of the visual look. The colors appear pale or washed out in a number of scenes. This look has been present in Spielberg's movies for a while now, unfortunately.
