"Quarantine" is amazing. A theremin used as a "solo vocalist"? I can honestly say that I've never heard that before, at least not to this degree.
I don't get the mentality of "that's not the movie I wanted to see, why didn't you make the movie I wanted?"!
It's mainly a mix between expectation and entitlement, my two most hated "e" words (other than "elitism"). When one lives life with such a mindset, it's hard to escape from it, turning the payer of a few bucks into an armchair stockholder.
That KUSC interview is really nice, sounds like Hurwitz and Chazelle have a good thing going.
If only (novel use of theremin/harp duet aside) the score better reflected their words.
Everything about the process they speak about here - recording different orchestral parts separately, feeding said parts through different audio processors, so on and so forth - are the exact techniques that [insert random hack] does as well on a daily basis in the new paradigm of film scoring.
The same gorgeous main theme gets reimagined many times throughout the film, here it is in an especially emotional scene, on harp and theremin: This is EXACTLY the kind of score we all complain we aren't getting anymore. It's beautiful.
Sorry, but that was cringe worthy, if not hilariously bad. Sounds like cat murder in slow motion. The Landing is a simplistic repetitious bore.

I can't find video of the SNL commercial for Michael Bolton: In His Own Words, where he changes one part of a famous song to make it his own (for example, his timeless classic "I Heard It Through The Bushes").
Have to watch the movie. But on album, the score is...average. Honestly, sounds like a RCP score, and I don't even think it is a great RCP score. Maybe a good one.
