Previous five CD sets have never been classified as "box" sets, i.e. Raksin, Schifrin, TV Omnibus etc. This would fall in that category with a double-clamshell style release.

True, although for some reason, FSM's "Classic Western" sets, which feature three discs and no box, are classified as "box sets" on this site. The distinction doesn't mean anything to me, so I don't really care. But there it is.

I guess we have not correctly categorized some albums on the site... when I refer to box sets, I mean the five big ones: Elmer Bernstein FMC, Superman, MGM Treasury, Rozsa Treasury and ST:TNG Ron Jones. My days producing those are over, sorry...!

If so, I hope it gives us the fantastic segue between the climax of the desert/water scenes and the first scene of the galley and first blows of the hortator's gavel. That's my favorite musical scene transition in all film soundtracks. If I had to choose one example to best illustrate Rozsa's dramatic genius, that would be it.

It's a thrilling transition, but does the credit belong to Rozsa? If we've learned anything from studies of this score, it's that the movie's final editing stages involved endless tweaks made without the composer's involvement. Film really is a collaborative art, and sometimes the good choices, as well as the bad ones, are made by somebody other than the composer.

Well, if the new release is Ben-Hur, maybe the specific cue notes will clarify that. To my ears, that transition sounds composed rather than the work of an editor. But it would be interesting to know for sure.

The other issue with a 5 disc release is the postage from SAE. For international customers, the first disc is USD7.10, and the remaining 4 would be 2.10 each. That makes it 15.50 for postage alone, on top of the price of the release. If Im right in saying that, it makes it likely to be a rather expensive purchase in my book.

Agreed.

Simplest solution: Buy it from another retailer. SAE's multi-disc postage pricing has always put me off ordering such titles from them.

Okay, I'm putting money away this Friday. Count me in for two copies. My father will be ecstatic.

I'm ordering two copies of this, one for me and one for my son, who is as much of a Ben Hur fan as I am.
