That cover artwork. I'm at a complete loss for words. How in the name of fudge did that get an 'ok' from anyone?!

That is some really shitty cover art. Wish all score releases just used the original poster art designed for the films initial release.

Sadly, those decisions are almost always made by the studio not the music labels.

There's certainly a lot of truth to this and Ive experienced this myself. At the same token most other specialty labels cover art are much better. This Matrix cover art is gawd awful!!! Though art design is never a deal breaker for me. I'll be purchasing this title all the same!

Do they literally think it'll hurt their brand if a few thousand copies of CDs don't have their newly-commissioned garbage artwork?

The point is, it's their decision to make. We don't get a say. These kinds of specialty products are a nightmare to license and prepare so I don't see any of the labels digging in to fight about the key art the studio requires. I think the labels in general do a great job with the elements they're required to use (shoutout to Jim Titus!) but sometimes there's not much anyone can so.

My point still stands. Are they deluded enough to think that not using their garbage art will somehow hurt their brand? Micromanaging to the Nth degree.

As much as I truly love Don Davis's music for The Matrix trilogy and listen to all three scores often, I might skip this edition. I'm happy with the Deluxe edition from Varese and even from that single disc, I whittled it down to a 50 minute custom album edit for myself. Honestly, I listen to Reloaded and Revolutions more often, I find them each more satisfying in longer form.

I remember that the song compilation got the cool poster art while Varese's score release had much less imposing arrangement of heads. We score fans had to put up with that a lot back then.

I am just curious if it’s an Hybrid SACD ie allows both CD and SACD to play and if it’s in Stereo or Multi Channel or both!

I will admit like others have said, the most important thing is the music actually on the album. Still, it's always much more enjoyable when a release has the complete package and scores an A in every facet -- great cover art, great liner notes inside from a design standpoint and how well written they are and sonically speaking, a great audio experience.

On that note, I have the original album and the deluxe edition. Can anyone distill the newly released material on this puppy and suggest a couple of highlights where I should put my focus in trying to decide whether to upgrade? Thanks!

I don't own any edition of the score, so I went for the SACD, despite the lack of details and higher price. Obviously, it would be ideal if it was a Hybrid SACD with a 5.1 layer, but either way, I want to support high resolution music on physical media, so it was an easy decision for me.

Varèse really should have included more information, though. I wonder how long it will take for the 1000 to sell out (if ever, but hopefully it does, and soon) and if Varèse is watching with an eye to possible further SACD releases, or if this is absolutely a one-off.

I'm really astonished and impressed that Varese took a risk on SACD. I have a few of the discs and they're spectacular on a Sony Blu-ray player. Most labels have abandoned that format citing low customer interest and licensing fees from Sony. It's a pleasant surprise.

There are few soundtrack SACDs I know of: the first release of STAR TREK: NEMESIS which was in multichannel (I think) and E.T.'s original album came out on 2-channel SACD. Obviously some of the Gerhardt Classic Film Scores have been released from quad masters. Are there others?

They should have had you do the cover art, steffromuk. I've seen some outstanding stuff from you.

I'm stunned how bad the cover art is. The color selection, the composition--it's the level of amateurism I would expect to see on a bootleg cover.

Varese did at least two others besides Nemesis, also Goldsmith: Timeline and The Great Train Robbery: The Deluxe Edition (less complete than the later Intrada and Quartet editions, though).

I believe that Sony also did some, like Horner's The Legend of Zorro. And I think A.I. by Williams got an SACD edition too? The Telarc label did a bunch of SACDs (all of which are fetching high prices second hand now); included among these were their two discs with Jerry Goldsmith conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, one of his film music and one of his concert music.

I wish there were more film music SACDs. Oh! I remembered another -- the amazing L.A. Philharmonic/Esa-Pekka Salonen album of Bernard Herrmann scores was released on the format:

Oh, and the Chandos classical label has repeatedly put out their more high profile releases on SACD hybrid, which I think sometimes includes a film music release. Here's one that's film music related at least -- Bernard Herrmann's Moby Dick!

Totally agree... will definitely be sliding an insert over this cover. Let the design competition begin! smile

I have all that you have mentioned, plus:

JERRY GOLDSMITH - Timeline, The Great Train Robbery, The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith (Telarc 5.0), Christus Apollo

ENNIO MORRICONE - The Mission, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Morricone, The Very Best of Ennio Morricone, Focus

JAMES HORNER - Titanic, A Beautiful Mind (Both in 5.1)

JOHN WILLIAMS - E.T. (5.1, but does not sound as good as the 2-channel mix), John Williams At The Movies (recording
is not as vibrant as it could have been)

THOMAS NEWMAN - MEET JOE BLACK (5.1, sounds very good)

PHILLIP GLASS - Metamorphosis/The Hours

TOP GUN (Expanded Eiditon), THE SOPRANOS - PEPPERS & EGGS (2-CD)

...and Every One of the Eric Kunzel Telarc recordings that came out just after the turn of the century.

The one with the most impressive sound? Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone. Very clean and spacious, plus the music selections makes the album enjoyable.

I am not opposed to the format because I still have hardware that can play it back. I have some really good-sound non soundtracks that warrant keeping the option open. Some of the Jazz stuff are just gorgeous, especially the Diana Krall recordings. Yes, I agree that Varese took a big risk with releasing this on SACD, considering that a true 24/96 downloadable counterpart would be considered "high resolution" by the modern standards - should people care about that part.

The big question I'd have for the Mastering Engineers out there, is, what do you do differently when you create a master for 24/96 or higher or SACD that you differently for a CD or LP master? Each format would have it's own format constraints, so which format would you prefer to listen to your mastered work on?

Very,
MaxB

That Moby Dick Cantata is a house-shaker! Superb performances and really top-tier sound. Absolutely blows Herrmann's own recording out of the water.

Another film score re-recorded in SACD 5.0 is Ralph Vaughan Williams' SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC (the complete score - not the symphony).
