I don't own any edition of the score, so I went for the SACD, despite the lack of details and higher price. Obviously, it would be ideal if it was a Hybrid SACD with a 5.1 layer, but either way, I want to support high resolution music on physical media, so it was an easy decision for me. Varèse really should have included more information, though. I wonder how long it will take for the 1000 to sell out (if ever, but hopefully it does, and soon) and if Varèse is watching with an eye to possible further SACD releases, or if this is absolutely a one-off.

I'm really astonished and impressed that Varese took a risk on SACD. I have a few of the discs and they're spectacular on a Sony Blu-ray player. Most labels have abandoned that format citing low customer interest and licensing fees from Sony. It's a pleasant surprise. There are few soundtrack SACDs I know of: the first release of STAR TREK: NEMESIS which was in multichannel (I think) and E.T.'s original album came out on 2-channel SACD. Obviously some of the Gerhardt Classic Film Scores have been released from quad masters. Are there others? Varese did at least two others besides Nemesis, also Goldsmith: Timeline and The Great Train Robbery: The Deluxe Edition (less complete than the later Intrada and Quartet editions, though). I believe that Sony also did some, like Horner's The Legend of Zorro. And I think A.I. by Williams got an SACD edition too? The Telarc label did a bunch of SACDs (all of which are fetching high prices second hand now); included among these were their two discs with Jerry Goldsmith conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, one of his film music and one of his concert music. I wish there were more film music SACDs. Oh! I remembered another -- the amazing L.A. Philharmonic/Esa-Pekka Salonen album of Bernard Herrmann scores was released on the format: https://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/318 Oh, and the Chandos classical label has repeatedly put out their more high profile releases on SACD hybrid, which I think sometimes includes a film music release. Here's one that's film music related at least -- Bernard Herrmann's Moby Dick! https://www.chandos.net/products/catalogue/CHSA%205095 Yavar

Obviously some of the Gerhardt Classic Film Scores have been released from quad masters. Are there others? I have all that you have mentioned, plus: JERRY GOLDSMITH - Timeline, The Great Train Robbery, The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith (Telarc 5.0), Christus Apollo ENNIO MORRICONE - The Mission, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Morricone, The Very Best of Ennio Morricone, Focus JAMES HORNER - Titanic, A Beautiful Mind (Both in 5.1) JOHN WILLIAMS - E.T. (5.1, but does not sound as good as the 2-channel mix), John Williams At The Movies (recording is not as vibrant as it could have been) THOMAS NEWMAN - MEET JOE BLACK (5.1, sounds very good) PHILLIP GLASS - Metamorphosis/The Hours TOP GUN (Expanded Eiditon), THE SOPRANOS - PEPPERS & EGGS (2-CD) ...and Every One of the Eric Kunzel Telarc recordings that came out just after the turn of the century. The one with the most impressive sound? Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone. Very clean and spacious, plus the music selections makes the album enjoyable. I am not opposed to the format because I still have hardware that can play it back. I have some really good-sound non soundtracks that warrant keeping the option open. Some of the Jazz stuff are just gorgeous, especially the Diana Krall recordings. Yes, I agree that Varese took a big risk with releasing this on SACD, considering that a true 24/96 downloadable counterpart would be considered "high resolution" by the modern standards - should people care about that part. The big question I'd have for the Mastering Engineers out there, is, what do you do differently when you create a master for 24/96 or higher or SACD that you differently for a CD or LP master? Each format would have it's own format constraints, so which format would you prefer to listen to your mastered work on? Very, MaxB
