Today, I received the three new titles from the Varese Sarabande Club. Never have I seen CDs shipped and packed so negligently; nothing but cardboard container with no bubble wrap or packing of any kind. As expected one of the jewel cases (for Air Force One) had a deep crack in it. I have emailed Varese through their shipping company as directed on their website but I wonder what type of response I will get about a replacement jewel case. All of us pay too much money for these exemplary film scores and have high expectations to receive those items that we purchase in mint condition to be treated so shabbily by a shipping company. Is that too much to ask? I haven't ordered directly from VS since they messed up the Thorn Birds set. No dulcimer tracks which played a silly thing like the melody. When I was editing Mancini's Thorn Birds book we had the dulcimer tracks on the accompanying disc so they was available they just didn't look for them. I do my buying mostly from Intrada. I live in LA and their shipments arrive within a few days. I used to visit their store in San Francisco so I am a long time customer. Their discs come in a box with bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts in perfect condition.

There was a BOOK about THORN BIRDS? Yes. It's titled "Case History of a Film Score: The Thorn Birds" which I had the pleasure of editing. It contains in Mancini's words his process, piano parts of the main themes, timing sheets, conductor scores of 16 pieces and a CD of those pieces taken form the original session tapes with Mancini conducting. It has a couple of cues that are not the VS disc. Dulcimer included. I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it. Warner Bros. published it 2004 with little, if any, promotion. I often say it wasn't released, it escaped. It's available on Amazon.

Are the dulcimer cues counted as the two not on the Varese set? Or is it four including those?

Are the dulcimer cues counted as the two not on the Varese set? Or is it more including those? The dulcimer is missing from the main title on the VS release. I think there are a few more cues where it's missing but I don't remember which ones at the moment. I haven't listened to it in a long time. If memory serves me the dulcimer was recorded on a separate track and mixed in later. I started working on the book in 1998. Finally released in 2004 after a lot of proofreading and making corrections.

I just got a package with twelve CDs from Dutton Vocalion - wrapped tightly but not really in box, but rather like the Varese packaging. No cracked cases, but a broken hinge on two and broken teeth on the hub on eight. Point being, it really happens to everyone. I do think the post office workers take some delight in dropping heavy packages on top of the little ones - makes them feel manly or womanly.
