Jesus Christ, now that I've looked at more of the thread, I see I'm doing a riff on a BRUCE MARSHALL joke. Nothing wrong with stealing from the old masters. Just gimme credit, DAMMITT!

Whittling is one of my favorite hobbies. I’ll take my laptop out to the porch sometimes, the cows grazing in the distance, and pass the time whittling multi-disc C&Cs into perfect listening experiences. I’ll have to post some of my good ‘uns here some fine day.

What would pique my interest would be a thread in which we had to play "90s Varese Soundtrack Producer": create a 30-35 minute tracklist of an expanded score. And no cheating! Oh the heartache, the killing of the babies, the two tracks entering - the one track leaving, the choicing of the Sophies! Such a challenge would make "whittlers" look like the "fetch" that it is.

I'm for this idea, though I guess this thread covers similar ground. A different forum style would be better suited for a thread like that, because we could have polls and stickied threads, etc. For many recent scores, I just grab the tracks Southall mentions in his reviews and it seems to work out OK.

You're such a Sheep, Shaun. Remind me to kill ya when I next see ya. Hahaha ouch! Anyway, here's my Varese-like version of some guy's remix of Intrada's The Shadow 1. The Poppy Fields (Main Title) 2. I'll Be There 3. Chest Pains 4. The Knife 5. The Tank 6. The Hotel 7. Fight Like A Man 8. The Mirrors (Revised) 32 minutes-ish. I cut The Sanctum and The Tank, but maybe shouldn't have.

One good thing about FORBIN: only 43 minutes. Not really necessary , but i skip the three lounge tracks mid cd. Brm

Great thread idea! I usually make compilation playlists of one particular style (I have an action-music playlist, and one for contemplative/romantic, etc etc). Trimming down the chafe is a new idea to me--I came of age before all these long soundtracks were the norm so I'm in seventh heaven with the longer programs...so much to choose from! I remember being so disappointed when I was kid going into Camelot records at my local mall and shelling out 15$ for First Knight when it only had 1/3 of the score and barely a half hour of music. But I digress... I decided to approach this project wholeheartedly by starting with a personal favorite--Mark Mancina's Twister. The original Atlantic Records album was pretty substantial, giving a good overview of the thematic development. I was particularly happy the first time I popped on the CD and was treated with the ambient studio warm-up at the beginning of Wheatfield. Overall it's a solid album but there are some glaring mistakes (Walk in the Woods--how?!? HOW could they leave that cue off?!?). Also, the way the tracks are organized into suites never really did it for me and the overall track sequencing feels off. So I decided to try to whittle this score into a tight, 35-min album that has all the best bits and is arranged in a proper rising-and-falling-from-track-to-track sequence. Twister--Mark Mancina (1996) Using edits from the La-La Land Expanded Edition (2016) 1.) Wheatfield (film version) 2.) Cow 3.) Hail No! 4.) The Hunt Begins 5.) Wakita (Film Version) 6.) The Big Suck (Film Version) 7.) Walk In The Woods 8.) Sculptures (Film Version) 9.) End Title/Respect The Wind (Eddie Van what's his name?) Total time-- 35:13 Also--sidebar--the woodwind performances on this score are inspiring!!

I'm with Kev. 30-50 minutes is roughly the average length of a (longish) symphony, a concept album (rock, electronica) or similar things. I think soundtracks should adher to some of the same rules, and that's what I strive for in my own whittling when there is no OST alternative done by a producer or composer. Obviously, it will vary a bit from score to score. Something like STAR WARS warrants a 70-minute presentation, but most things don't. But the point of the challenge isn't about what you retain to maximize enjoyment, it's what you're still capable of enjoying while sacrificing what you must, because it's all you can "afford to publish". Bittersweetness is the requirement, producer empathy the side effect. Welcome to the 1990s, when all there was is flannel and... nope, that's about it. And, since they're so short, we can divulge in a little time to hear what others think would still make representative albums.

Interesting selections - any particular reason why you didn't want to include the movie's closing cue, "Frontal Lobotomy"? I was trying to trim it down, that's all! I prefer The Sanctum and The Tank to Frontal Lobotomy and cut both of those (perhaps idiotically), but dammit, now you have me wanting to un-whittle and make it a 45 minute album instead.
