Wow. I really hate having to post this. This is flat and lacking spirit. The production, too, is pedestrian. Such a disappointment. Sigh.

As with all of these Bond compilations, it's a mixed bag.

Some cracking new arrangements (You Know My Name, I'm looking at you), some very lacklustre - Goldfinger and Skyfall being big letdowns.

One day we'll eventually have good instrumentals of EVERY bond song - they just need to be pieced together from various albums.

Will post more thoughts when back at a PC.

Lol, nothing smashing about this at all. They should've postponed this album indefinitely, it's a lazy cash grab with mostly lacklustre performances.

Where can I find the best instrumentals of each Bond song then?

Mine is still in the mail, but I listened to it on youtube today.

Not the most essential album to own, I'm afraid. There's nothing really new about the pre-Brosnan titles - just that we've heard them in better performances. It's a miracle, though, that they have turned the Craig era songs into something that can be performed by a philharmonic orchestra.

This would have been a lot more fun if they had changed the arrangements or perhaps augmented with some of the less familiar themes. Even "We Have All The Time In The World" is missing. I'm afraid there's no real Bond feeling to this album.

I still like to listen to the LSO album conducted by John Cacavas - any fans of this one?

The reviews I've had from Bond fans are that this is TERRIBLE.

So much so I cancelled my order.

I don't need yet another collection of tepid, middle-of-the-road Bond interpretations.

Cheers

I think this is the best re-recording 007 album alongside "Bond For Orchestra" by Carl Davis.
Davis' versions are more powerfull, but B25 album contains more Barry-love-theme style, than Davis album.

And I'm a die-hard Bond fan cool

This is all very bland, both in arrangement and in recording IMHO. My heart sank when I saw Simon Rhodes was involved. This sounds as flat as many of his James Horner recordings. Don't know if it's the mic placement or what, but some instruments sound fine while the bigger orchestral sections sound distant and uninvolving.

Oh well....

I liked it. But the wait of over a year more made the expectations greater than what they could’ve delivered. And there were two things that didn’t pass the test. I was hoping they were gonna do something original with AVTAK. Instead they did a slightly altered Wine with Stacey or slowed down version AVTAK eith some additions. The other thing I was looking for was finally some thing approaching, now in the vaults somewhere, instrumental version of You Know My Name. They had it on a commercial here and then a week or two later gone. Album version sounds like it comes close at tomes with some flourishes, tempo changes, and volume changes not quite doing it. Still better than most instrumental versions. But these were the two I was eagerly awaiting.

Still as a Bond music aficionado, I had to own this and glad I did.

How many YKMN instrumentals are out there as far as you are aware of? There's a particular concert version I like (I think there's a video of David Newman conducting an abbreviated version as part of a Bond suite) which I've never found a proper recording of.

That said, I really like this new arrangement on this album.

There's Carl Davis' version (of YNMY) on Bond for Orchestra. It's on YouTube.

These are good arrangements of the songs, no doubt. But a lot have been heard before. They went for the slow John Barry Moviola-feel for most of them, but a great stand-out was a very very elegant, slower version of You Know My Name. Worth the money on it's own.

So, its back to Moviola II: Action and Adventure and the listenable stretches of the Nic Raine/Prague Phil Bond: Back in Action albums, I suppose?

I think this album's most interesting take is the one on ALL TIME HIGH. Might not appeal to many here, but I think it's the most creative and unique arrangement of all the 25 themes, and the one that least sounds like any performance heard before.

Other than that, I think the album suffers from having to rush many themes in too short time. Just 2-3 minutes isn't enough to develop something good, especially when the original song version has already been longer.

I don't know what to say. Just listen to Barry's own recordings for Columbia in the 1960s. Literally night and day. Why can't they do it like this any longer? All talented musicians, I'm sure, but the lack of inspiration is frightening. It's not like they have to write new scores/themes. They just have to make something entertaining out of the existing material. Add a few bars from other themes here and there, improvise,...

I enjoy the reconstruction of the missing "Goldfinger" tracks a lot more than this entire album (and I really despise synths!).

Haven’t heard so many bum notes since Monty Norman last ‘played’ the piano!

Move over Franck Pourcel-there’s a new bottom of the barrel

The praise I never knew I wanted, but nonetheless received. Thank you.

I agree! All Time High was always one of least enjoyed Bond songs, especially by Barry. An inferior FYEO in many ways. But this new version is elegant and makes for a better listen than the original, that can come across as a bit 80s cheese. The Royal Phil made it more serious.

Did you do the reconstructions? They are awesome. I simply love them. I wish you could do more. All the missing music of the series! I've given up on us getting the rest of the scores expanded!
