And the first three tracks can all be heard as exclusive previews of this album, in the (Goldsmith) Odyssey Interviews conversation I had with Brian, which you linked to above... http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1693987-odyssey-interviews-brian-tyler He really stepped up his incorporation of Goldsmith material here IMO (compared with his previous Rambo score), and I can't wait to hear the whole thing! So I just saw this. I'm embargoed, so I can't say very much. I quite liked it, and it's in my top 20 of the year (so far), but it's not on the level of the previous film and its glorious, operatic 'violence fantasy'. Some other things detract from the experience, like the score. Terrible, even in his arrangements of the Goldsmith quotes. Tyler simply doesn't know how to do dynamics in action sequences; it's a non-stop noisefest with drums going wild. It's strange, because he CAN do it (for example in a beautiful score such as STANDING UP), but somehow he goes completely bonkers in action movies. I'll chime in later with more specific comments. Just wanted to give a first impression, directly after getting home.

Since you are a huge Goldsmith fan, I will have to check out the rest of the score. Yeah obviously my opinion may change after I hear the whole thing, but I'm with Joan on this, for now, based on the first three cues. Do I wish Jerry were still alive to score this (or even that Joel McNeely might step in and actually score it in his style, a la his Air Force One cues)? Obviously. But I like Tyler's work just fine (just prepare yourself for Tyler action music rather than Goldsmithian action music) and I appreciate his incorporating more of Jerry's established thematic material than he did the last time around. I love Tyler's action scores and his music for Rambo was great, so I'm all sorts of fine with this.

Saw the film tonight. It was watchable, but it could've easily been a Liam Neeson joint rather than a Rambo film. Tyler's score sounded exactly like his previous Rambo score. Didn't pick up any more Goldsmith material than he's previously used, but I still liked it, so I won't be cancelling my pre-order.
