I understand wanting to give the show a western vibe but this score is so utterly disappointing. It's noisy, distracting and doesn't compliment anything. It actually calls negative attention to itself, which is NEVER good. The end credit theme is fine, I guess, but the rest, especially from Goransson, whose work I love, well... this might very well be some of the worst Star Wars music ever composed. -Erik- Holy crap, that was...um, crap I'm guessing they wanted something "edgy" ? It doesn't have to sound like Williams, but this was just noisy and shrill, full of bloops and big loud sound design. Yes, easily the worst Star Wars music to date. And just bad film score music. One track "You Are A Mandalorian" had some good moments, but that's it. This taught me a lesson. I guess the days of blind buying Star Wars music are gone.

Oh man, the last cut, "The Mandalorian," is perfecto. Perfectly comfortable in the Star Wars musical world. The big brass surge around the 2-minute mark feels like a tribute to Williams' style. I'd give it a Grammy nom for best instrumental composition. Big and memorable. The rest of the score? Meh. As always, I'll have to watch it and see how impactful the music is. But I'm encouraged that the series seems to be in good musical hands. -

First impression: oh, no, why so much noise and distortion? Second impression: well, it´s different... and it does create an interesting atmosphere. Third impression: it is new, it is daring, it is not like Williams-Star Wars but how can it be? And would that actually be better? No, because then people would say: it´s just fake Williams, not as good, and it just tiresomely recreates the overused sound instead of trying for something new! When will a Star Wars score finally be different? Yeah, expectations and personal taste always get in the way of actually experiencing what is offered. So... yes. I like it. Only - will Disney release every score now for that steep price? 10.99 Euros for every episode, that will be tough.

I'm wondering how D+ will handle video releases. I don't doubt that Lady & the Tramp will receive one, but still hoping I don't need a subscription just to see these shows at all (I'm not cutting cable just to rejoin the New Cable that is the Streaming Epoch). Guess I'll have to be spoiled on plot details as this series goes (no doubt with some tertiary connection to the Resistance trilogy to satisfy the fanons). As for releasing a score EP per episode: That would be the screwiest release schedule I've ever heard in all of soundtrackdom, and can only add "WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG, HOLLYWOOD??". Mondo Records is probably salivating now...

Agree 100%, worst SW music ever. This sounds like "we don't give a shit about 40 years of tradition". And so we finally reached the point when the music of a whole generation has been destroyed in agony. Sad.

Oh, the drama of whiners who cannot stand anything but their own taste.

How? Has the composer destroyed the scores of the previous films? With ease and mediocrity, unfortunately. And it's sad when people cheer a lame approach. Plus you don't get the point. The enfasis isn't on the previous scores but on the traditional style they have established and the important continuity that style represent. It's OK to develop or upgrade the music material, push bold instrumentation, different arrangements, etc. But fundaments are the key and if you scratch them completely (as in this case) then what you have is anything else but the proper result. Oh, the drama of whiners who cannot stand anything but their own taste. Wrong again. It's not a matter of what you, me, or anyone likes or not. It's a matter of defined frames: if you make a SW thing then people expect it to sound like SW (same if you make Bond, or any other franchise which have endured so long in time). We've been discussing this so many times before that I'm already tired to repeat it. Being different doesn't mean being better, just for the sake of because it's different. There are many forms to be outstanding and respect what came before at the same time.

Did you guys watch the show, or just listen to the album? Because I haven't listened to the album yet, but I thought the music fit the tone and action of the show like a glove. There wasn't a lot of adventure or derring-do (at least thus far) to necessitate big flouncy Star Wars brass. Yes, I first experienced the score in context. IMO, it was distracting. But that just me who found that open cue with that repetitive flute line to be extremely annoying. And then when the action started we got THE most generic modern-day trailer-esque distorted synths and pounding drums, which does NOT move the Star Wars musical palette forward. It actually takes it a few steps back, unfortunately. I get wanted to go for that "western" vibe but I don't think Goransson succeeded because he called so much negative attention to his score. And then when it did get more "traditional" it sounded like a second rate Bill Conti theme. And the mix is sooo incredibly dry. I really like most of what I've heard from Goransson so far (his Creed and Black Panther scores are excellent) but his Star Wars music, IMO, is a major disappointment. Having said that, let see where this sound goes and if it evolves. We are only one episode in and hopefully Goransson's music grows as the series moves on. So far, however, I honestly feel like episode one contains some of the worst Star Wars music ever written. -Erik-
