Yup, I always knew some of the score's best cues were left off...

It is a decent animated pic besides. On Netflix US side if anyone wants to see it, kinda "free"

It's a frustrating film for me. I love the straight up drama and seriousness of the story but the assassin attempts at humor especially from the heros and protagonists side-kicks were annoying if not down right grating. I really dislike it when an animated film opens or closes with live action sequences too. But it's a beautiful film with a lot of heart and the hero really goes on a personal journey. They successfully build tension and it never lets up. The backgrounds and effects animation were gorgeous.

I entirely agree, there is some stuff that does not work here, oddly the comic bits are the worst part. The straight ahead drama and adventure portions are quite good. I found it refreshingly direct in how the illness of the children is shown, down to showing the coffins. It is a bit surprising, and you would not see it in a Disney film. But yes, the forests, the snow and the mountains and cliffs, and the little town of Nome all look nicely detailed and gorgeous.

I never understood why some of the best bits of a score were left off the album. I can think of many examples of this.

Don't know film or score, but I've known of the heroic dog since childhood, thanks to this statue in New York's Central Park. My fingers are among the millions that have doubtless contributed to its patina!

Working within a set album length, I would surmise that the desire to present variety was prioritized. Thus a bit more of the mickey-mousey music was included for contrast with all the dramatic stuff. But now we thankfully have every cue, and the dramatic development is all intact.

The backgrounds were stunning!

Isn't it also the case a lot of times an album must be constructed before the score is completed? Not saying that is the case here.

I like this logic, that often OSTs seek to present variety rather than all the highlights necessarily (especially since often the highlights in these kinds of scores are the action set pieces). I'm quite happy and grateful than complete scores are a more accessible option nowadays, but it does often lead me to appreciate how the album was arranged.
Especially considering Goldsmith's response to why certain fun cues were left off Congo's album. "Go listen to Rambo."

Finally gave this a listen all the way through.
It's the least compelling of Horner's animation music for me (along with Once Upon a Forest), but keep in mind, cartoon Horner is my favorite Horner, so this still obviously would rank highly enough for me to grab this release without question!
A few of the one-minute cues can stand to be taken out (Muk and Luk's Arrival doesn't contribute anything to musical narrative beyond the composer trying to figure why Phil Collins as two polar bears is supposed to be funny, and the two short action cues at the end just kind of rudely intrude between "Heritage of the Wolf" and the finale), but this release is still wholly worth it for the sound upgrade. Hot diggety, is it nice to finally able to actually, well, hear the darn music!
I do hope the Fievel scores get this treatment someday, but until then, this'll suffice!

The American Tail and Land Before Time scores complete are true grails for me, because I listened to those original albums over and over at the very beginning of my interest in film music back in the early 90s. Since Balto is a Universal release, I hope this bodes well for Intrada releasing expanded versions of all three (a 3-disc American Tail set with complete versions of both scores and a third disc of extras would be wonderful).

I doubt, and hope not, that there's enough extras/alternates to warrant a third disc for those!

I really had to edit the heck out of this score. Just like the film is peppered with annoying comedy though out, so is the score peppered with Mickey Mousey music. Though it's in the minority, it is all over the place. I managed to cut most of it out.

Tracks like Muk and Luk were removed altogether. I agree The Avalanche and Ice Cave kinda interrupts the flow of the original OST sequencing. But I like both cues and kept them in. Though I did cross-fade them into one track.

I also like some of the album cues over the film score cues and switched them out. So glad both were offered on this release. It took a little effort editing out bits and pieces here and there but all said and done I love the score and have been playing it constantly.

Am I to assume you prefer the film version of Balto Brings the Medicine? I'm surprised Intrada didn't include that version in the main program.
